  1. Hard to answer because there are a lot of variables starting with the type of plane you have (size, age, buy or build, VH or RAAus), who maintains it (you, LAME), cost of spare parts, cost of hangar or wherever you keep it, insurance, rego (more applicable to RAAus), fuel costs (avgas or mogas), how much you fly, etc. My plane is paid for and probably costs me roughly $100/hr to run in round figures although I've never really worked it out and it will vary markedly depending on hours flown. That's cheap in aircraft terms.
  2. Whichever style works best for the site is fine by me.

    Cri Cri

Serpentine's annual fly-in is on next Sunday 14th Oct if anyone wants to come down. Apart from the aircraft, various car and motorcycle clubs, miniature steam engines and other exhibits usually turn up and it makes for a good day out.

Yes, he went into the scrub bordering the field. I believe he was knocked around a bit but recovered. Didn't know him personally and have no idea where he is now.

Correct. The jet powered Cri Cri is based at Serpentine. There are around 130 aircraft on the field - from memory around 80 experimentals, 20 or so vintage/warbirds and the rest are commercially built. Interesting aircraft include several Tiger Moths and Austers, a Fox Moth, Sopwith Pup, Bucker Jungman, Stearman, Pitts S12, a couple of Tailwinds, Yaks, Culp Special, Stinson, Spitfire replicas, the Silver Centenary, Pietenpol, plus plenty of Jabirus, Zeniths, about 23 RV's of various types and well as Cessnas, Pipers etc.
  6. I'm VH experimental so not in RAAus.
  7. Just paid $2100 for $80K (should be more) hull cover and $2m public liability with $1,000 excess. Next time I'll look at increasing both excess and hull cover.and see how that affects the premium.
  8. My mistake. Looked at the wrong picture.

  10. With or without you in it?
  11. Did you spill any drops of mogas on it? That will cause almost instant cracking. I'm about to replace my rear window for the second time for that reason. I wouldn't be too concerned about your window failing in flight.
  12. Just got back from a trip to visit our daughter and son-in-law in Katherine. Serpentine-Myrup-Nullarbor Roadhouse-Maralinga-Coober Pedy-Cadney Homestead-Kulgera-Uluru/Olgas-Ti-Tree-Tennant Creek-Katherine (Tindal)-Kununurra-Bungles-Wolfe Ck Crater-Halls Creek-Fitzroy Crossing-Sandfire Roadhouse-Meekatharra-Northam and back to Serpentine. About 4,300 nm all up. No problems apart from getting bogged on a sand track at Sandfire Roadhouse while taxiing closer to the bowsers. Also had severe winds overnight in a 15-20 minute event at Meekatharra (60-70 kph), but luckily the tiedowns held and no damage. Typical cruising speed was about 115kts, but saw 153kts ground speed at one point near Esperance, and 49kts crosswind on another occasion. Pilots are lucky - they get all the best views. 13. I suspect most of these are plans built but some interesting aircraft here. Biplanes You can Build Also worth checking the Kitplanes magazine buyer's guide: They update the list of available aircraft every year: KITPLANES The Independent Voice for Homebuilt Aviation - Aircraft Directory Directions
  14. That would be the one. I'm not sure what they fly at the moment, but I think the 14 would be a step up for most of us, both in performance and bank balance required.
  15. Very nice! There's another one nearing completion that will fly out of Serpentine.
  16. Due to a mix up at Vans, I have a spare SB 18-02-02 Stabilator spar upgrade kit available. PM me if interested and I'll mail it out if you donate $10 to Ian for the site. Cheers rgmwa
  17. Oops! I should have said 2.3 times stronger and 3.3 times stiffer. Apologies all. However the difference is still significant given the small increase in thickness. Can’t go back and edit my previous post unfortunately.
  18. I don't know the answer, but compared to 1.0 mm sheet, 1.5 mm sheet will be about 3.3 times stronger in bending and 5 times stiffer.
  19. Took me a while, but here is a wartime report on the 109E. The canopy could be jettisoned (see Appendix 1). http://kurfurst.org/Tactical_trials/109E_UKtrials/Morgan.html
  20. I'll counter with this Kaz, although I think this aircraft is a G model, so you may be right about earlier marks. Third paragraph under `Entering the cockpit'. http://www.eaf51.org/newweb/Documenti/Storia/Flying_ 109_ENG.pdf Cheers rgmwa
  21. I believe the 109 canopy could also be jettisoned. Rear mounted springs lifted the back of the canopy into the slipstream allowing it to detach.
  22. Mine are Norbar. Bought from a supplier in the UK (cheaper than here). The 1/4" version goes down to 10 in.lb
  23. You will need one that goes down to 20 in.lb or less for most of your work (AN3 and AN4 bolts typically). A 1/4" drive torque wrench is ideal. For prop bolts I've got a 3/8" wrench that has a much higher range (can't recall what exactly).
  24. Only until Trump hears about this new high tech export initiative from China.
