  1. Yes, a true story - I was very fortunate to have spent quite a bit of time with Curtis Pitts over a few years and he confirmed it. Andy Ski's Bolt was very nice when he built it too but I haven't seen it for ages too. Looking forward to seeing SZT sometime.
  2. Piper has the "girder" because it needs the meat for its cantilever structure. Which has higher stress per G? Comparison wrt ageing is more about fatigue life and corrosion.Have you seen the life limit on the wing of one variant of the PA-28 (from memory, it was a CASA requirement so I'm assuming it still exists).
  3. I used to see John fly JOL around after he built it, was very nice back then. Same with DDO. Incidentally, I met Lamar Steen back in those days, nice guy - and big, which explains why he developed the Skybolt from the Pitts.
  4. From Torquay beach can't see anything due low cloud and rain.
  5. (edited to delete names & addresses although publicly available very easily) There's one around with USA registration too.
  6. Don't need to guess at numbers as the arithmetic is fairly simple and I would expect the ATSB to have done something sensible with the data they have. Why not ask them (eg discussion on their Facebook page)?

  8. There are some apps around for recording them, I'll be trialling a new one soon. The next trick, not so easy, will be to do the score.

  10. Still a great little trainer.
  11. That's exactly what I do, Robbo. My iPhone goes most places with me. CASA's guide to their ramp checks says it is ok to just have a copy, my guess is that is based on the final draft Part 61. However, Part 61 requires the licence document to be carried i.e. not a copy.
  12. Now that we are all looking at the same section of the document, I suggest you read it again to check the transponder requirements for Class D.
  13. You'll find that all the guys on the trucks are very friendly and helpful but if they are refuelling you may not get a response to your radio call however most likely heard and noted. I prefer a phone call so can leave a message if they're busy. (I see now that all the bowsers take credit cards.)
  14. Shell bowser takes credit cards. So do the trucks - call Colin for BP on 9587 5201.
  15. meanwhile, the email that I got from CASA today after 7 months.
  16. .... because I have an Icom IC-A15: http://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/engage-blogs/engage-blogs/Spectrum/Supporting-aviation-communications-and-operations
  17. They did last year. "Last days to have your say on CASA’s performance The important new survey being conducted to benchmark the aviation community’s views about CASA closes on 18 December 2015. The online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and covers CASA’s key performance areas. Views are sought on CASA’s performance in specific areas such as efficiency, responsiveness, accountability and timeliness. Questions cover how easy it is to comply with regulations, the development of new regulations, consistency of decision making and satisfaction with service delivery. Overall, the survey aims to determine the strengths and weaknesses of CASA’s relationship with the aviation community. Results will be used by CASA’s Board and management to improve CASA’s performance, build stronger working connections with the aviation community and lift service delivery. The survey is being conducted online by an independent market research organisation, all responses are held securely and participants can choose to be anonymous. This survey will be run every two years so CASA can measure changes in performance and interaction with the aviation community. The survey meets recommendation eight of the Aviation Safety Regulation Review. Make sure your views are heard and complete the survey now."
  18. Individuals can't use that excuse so we must not accept it from the RAA, nor from CASA who are also way behind with their regulatory guidance information (eg out of date CAAPs).
  19. and offensive so more added to my ignore list.
  20. An interesting although outdated paper on collision avoidance at http://www.augc.on.net/docs/10532_Collision-Avoidance.pdf
  21. I have different thoughts after reading the report the pilot put the aeroplane in a situation such that loss of control was likely. analysis shows that it would've been fatal regardless of that deformation and they might've had longer lives if not for that.
