  1. well, the ophthalmologist says that I have very slight clouding in the lenses, little more than normal aging, and that if I can see OK while wearing a hat, which I can, then he definitely won't operate. Instead he'll review the situation every 2 years. When a surgeon say an op isn't necessary, I'm happy with that advice. Thanks everyone for all the great advice, which will come in handy if/when I ever have this op.
  2. I will ground myself for as long as my doctor advises.
  3. I'm required to inform CASA? with an RAAus flight certificate? Also, can I ask what the issue was that you had with one eye? thanks
  4. on pprune the pilot reported that "On climb out, the engine rapidly, and without herald, powered down to approx. zero thrust." ..... we'll all be interested to know the cause. He did well to land it uneventfully.
  5. does anyone know anything about this: Another Jab engine failure... - PPRuNe Forums not reported yet on this forum; at Wagga reportedly.
  6. there's a video shot inside the plane, and you can hear people loudly urging others to get right off. Lots exited without luggage, but quite a few do have carry-on. Dutchroll is 100% right; I think the biggest issue is that if everyone stops to grab their bag it greatly slows the evacuation. It's not hard to envisage the situation in which slowing evacuation could cost lives.
  7. yes, that occurred to me too, or, even less plausible, but a definite option if we'll stretch plausibility, a UFO.
  8. fabulous flight yesterday, out of YMBD; nav exercise and didn't get lost. V windy and gusty on the landing, but the jab is still usable. Overall a good day.
  9. I'm glad to hear that it won't, after a recovery period, interfere with my flying.
  10. remember that Bruce Willis movie, was it Die Hard II or Die Hard with a vengeance? Terrorists have taken over an LA skyscraper and only Bruce can rescue the situation. He gets into an elevator, and someone says "hold the lift". Bruce instantly realizes that by saying lift not elevator, they have shown themselves to be not true-blue yanks, and on the basis of that only, whips out his machine gun and fills them with lead. Of course he turns out to be correct, they are indeed the terrorists. A great hollywood moment.
  11. that's a whole 'nother story, best we don't got there.....
  12. wow, thank you very much everyone for this great advice.
  13. can anyone recommend an android app that I could use to look up the weather?
  14. thanks everyone, this is all good to know and not only does it address my Q., but also gives lots of context and other sources of weather info.
  15. OK, thank you everyone. As you can tell, I'm learning navs.
  16. basic question, I know. I go to NAIPS, log in, get an area briefing, cut and paste it into the plain English converter, and it only gives me weather until 12.30 am tomorrow, even tho' I typed 24 hrs validity into NAIPS. I changed that to 48 hrs but no joy. How do I get the weather forecast for 10am tomorrow? thanks
  17. thanks for all the info everyone, much appreciated. How long do you have to take off work after the op, and how long before you can fly again?
  18. OK, thanks, this sounds a bit like me; I don't get ghosting but glare is a big problem. I was wondering about this: 5-10 yrs ago glare didn't bother me at all. Now I know. Ever since I turned 60 everything seems to be falling to bits.
  19. gorilla tape? I tried to fix a waterproof jacket with that stuff and was disappointed: the glue definitely didn't meet expectations. I doubt that anyone, anywhere, will give you the OK to fly with gorilla tape fixing the hole in the elevator. But what would I know? I'm just a pilot, not a LAME. They'll be cautious too. I read somewhere about someone in Africa who used it for emergency repairs, but you have options. Yes, you need to fly, but you also need to stay alive. Sorry to be blunt.
  20. i got bitten by a European wasp on my ear, it bit repeatedly, about 5-6 times in 1 sec. It sounded and felt like a machine-gun in my ear. And was very painful. Years ago I was riding the Ducati when a bee bit me on my neck -not nice- but the wasp was much worse. At least I was in the garden, and not on short final.
  21. I feel the same way about anyone touching my eyes, but do you mean they do the op while you're awake??? I've got to the point where I just can't stand any glare at all; if there's any glare I just can't see, but my good eye corrects up to 20/20. My bad eye has macular degeneration so it's never going to be good. I always wear a hat because glare bothers me so much: a baseball cap for flying and an Akubra otherwise. Wearing hats is part of the recommendation from the American Ophthalmology Society, and they also recommend sunglasses, which I don't like because I have trouble seeing the car/plane instruments. My glasses have a UV coating, but I don't know how well this compares to sunglasses. Thanks for the advice everyone, keep it coming. It's very important to me that I could still fly.
