  1. a friend of mine had a 750GT and almost at the end of the main straight of Adelaide International Raceway, it went clunk and stopped producing power. She coasted to a stop, and then another bike stopped next to her. She looked at the rider, who was covered in oil and metalflake, and said, what happened to you? He said, look down, what's happened to your engine? Of the the front cylinder, there was little sign: just some bolts holding the head, and a bent con-rod poking out of a now-ruined case. They sounded fantastic but were hand grenades. When I switched to Kawasakis, I was very grateful for their bulletproof motors.
  2. I could reminisce at length about the comments made by lady passengers on my 900SS; it had a certain throbbing character that they liked. Also, by going faster I could make them cling on to me harder.
  3. ah, those were the days: lady passengers on the back of a 900SS!! You had to fit the twin seat. You're taking me back now, almost 40 years. There's nothing like a Ducati v-twin.
  4. the owners manual on my Kawasaki 4 many years ago, with twin rear shocks, said that a fault in one shocker "would convert machine into evil device".
  5. preflight check of flap operation?
  6. when learning on the jab I used to land and the LH side, but somehow I've dropped that habit. Also I've now got it into my brain to dance on those pedals. I now enjoy landing the jab, even in gusty crosswinds (touch wood!). All credit is due to my instructors.
  7. love that instructor: he's very calm.
  8. same is true of Jabiru pilots: I know because I've done it, some years ago. Did circuits for 30 min or so, on landing expected 50L still in tank but only about 30. Found that I'd left the fuel cap off. Sure sucks fuel out fast. I double check this now, every flight. And I don't let people distract me during pre-flight.
  9. I agree: how did he get to 175 ft with the engines at idle? That doesn't add up to me either.
  10. "he" but it's your plane? someone else was flying it?
  11. ok, fair enough. my instructor drilled into me 3 important things: the air above you runway behind you fuel left in the bowser. It seems she didn't fill her tanks at the start of the flight. A terrible price to pay.
  12. how do you know? Statements that "there was no sign of fuel at the crash site" or that the wings broke open with no sign of fuel don't prove that it ran out of fuel; maybe it had fuel in its tanks but the tanks didn't rupture.
  13. according to the TV program, NTSB says it took on 5 hrs fuel, and had flown for 3.
  14. what are the obvious ones?
  15. spare pair of glasses, if your wear them.
  16. when I went over to a Sennheiser ANR, at first the plane sounded completely different. Now I'm sure I can hear the engine better and I wouldn't be without it. And it's a lot quieter. And I can hear stuff on the radio better. Protecting your hearing is important.
  17. was it Spike Milligan who said "fortunately the ground broke my fall"
  18. great news that the pilot's ok, not the first time a jab has hit powerlines and the pilot survived.
  19. I'm very happy with my Sennheiser set, and a big plus is that if the battery goes flat, which has happened to me, they still work, you just lose the noise cancelling. I'm told that in a Bose, they stop working altogether, which you don't want in a busy circuit pattern. On the other hand, Sennheiser have decided to go out of the aviation headset business. It's not clear how this will affect the availability of spares past the warranty period.
  20. out of curiosity, what type of engine is this?
  21. sorry, was that "supercheap aero store"?
  22. I remember the call I made: Jabiru xxxx lined up and rolling 02, first solo YEEHAA!!!
  23. as a member of RAAus, I'm concerned to see personal comments here. It's fine to disagree with someone's views, but can we please do so in a respectful way?
  24. good to see the community is getting some value from those F16s
  25. thanks for the tip; I got Gann's book on kindle, only $11, and it's great, beautifully written and v enjoyable to read.
