  1. Howdy Tozza. If you want to maximise your assignment results, this might help: Use Capitals for Year 11 and I. Make your report easier to read by breaking it up into sentences, which start with a Capital and end with a full stop. Use an apostrophe with words like here’s (which is actually here is).

  3. Dr. Karl featured this story in the recent Australian Geographic: https://hackaday.com/2021/10/25/the-longest-ever-flight-was-over-64-days-in-a-cessna-172/
  4. Hadn’t heard that, iBob. You might be into something, because my father’s line comes from Yorkshire, and AFAIK, there’s no Scottish ancestors.
  5. Been there PM, done that. When I’ve left the boost pump on, scanning the panel I haven’t noticed the switch position, but realise my error when the Mizer reads a few l/hr higher than it should. Must have Scottish ancesors.
  6. When I clicked on that video I just happened to be listening to some loud music on my excellent new headphones. The engine roar was more enjoyable!
  7. Those of us with an engine out front have it easy: all have to do is follow the prop.
  8. Nev that’s the reason I have a clear plastic “skirt” above the top of my Mr. Funnel. The idea is to contain fuel vapours and ensure their concentration is too high to support combustion. Probably should test that theory, well away from the plane.
  9. Not all aviation fuel is dangerous; a special blend was created especially for the Blackbird (SR-71). Flying at Mach III heated the skin enough to expand, sealing the leaks, but on the ground, fuel poured out. The party trick was to throw a lighted cigarette butt into the pool of spilled fuel. Nothing happened.
  10. Almost nobody…Several Jodel people have converted to diesel power. Reduced chance of fire is one attraction, the other economy. My initial enthusiasm has waned due to issues with waxing of fuel and the extra weight of a good reliable diesel engine.
  11. I didn’t understand why my EH Holden was so cheap until I hit tree; discovered the wheel arches were made of bog. The sealed beam headlights were well made- they survived the prang and went on to give sterling service on my motorcycle.
  12. He was showing off the slow-speed capabilities of the aircraft, which he is Au agent for.
  13. Good point, Glen. Recently I was approaching what looked like a solid bank of cloud, but the ground shadows ahead showed otherwise.
  14. When u run out of aeroplane types, maybe u could list all those, like the Ha-139, with diesel engines.
  15. Opening the rear passenger windows in a modern car can result in very uncomfortable noise buffeting at a mere 50 knots.
  16. Places like JarCar sell tiny little cooling fans for computers. Maybe set one up behind your iPad? Where it’s mounted is important; mine has been mounted in several places in my plane and now seems happy hanging under the panel, in front of the stick. That’s beween my knees and out of the sunlight, a good shady spot to avoid screen glare.
  17. I found that image yonks ago in an article about the Graf Zeppelin, which was to be the Nazi’s first Aircraft carrier. The Stuka was modified to allow it to operate off this short field and I’m assuming the unusual features are massive stall fences, with windows for visibility. Love to know more about it.
  18. Wow Red, probably the nearest the Nazis got to an operational aircraft carrier! Where do you find all these gems that I’ve never heard of?
  19. My few test pilot sessions were stressful and taught me quite a bit of respect for those who do it for a living. After several stall tests in various configurations I wimped out and now prefer more placid flying. One flight test I never got around to doing is opening my canopy in flight. I designed it with that in mind and if I take off with it half open, air pressure slides it shut. There is no pressing reason to try opening it in flight, so I’ll wimp out of that test as well.
  20. Another reminder that, before takeoff, we all need to have a plan for if the noise stops. During Covid, my flying horizons narrowed enormously. Familiarity leads to complacency… Some runways don’t give many options.
