  1. Well, in all the years since I started flying (30+) I have never heard anybody say they prefer no audible stall warning. As far as I know, all Jabiru aircraft have a stall warning. I like to hear it squeak just as the wheels touch the ground. If you are flying in even light turbulence, sloppy controls and any buffet due to impending stall could possibly be masked by that turbulence? Still, as long as you're alone when (if) a stall occurs and you're not over my house.
  2. He was probably in 'WTF mode" between the engine failure and hitting the ground. The WTF mode lasts a few seconds and it sounds like he did not have a few seconds to act. Even the best of us have WTF mode when things fly to bits.
  3. Did you know that people who study in groups (generally) do ten times better than those who study alone. And those who have 'hands on' experience (actually playing with or dismantling the things they're learning about.) also do ten times better. The internet is a great resource but always be aware that those providing answers may not be experts and may in fact be idiots.
  4. Nice to know somebody still uses these things. Too many folks I know rely on iPads etc. and have little idea when the thing shuts off.
  5. My insurance says my plane is covered for business or pleasure. I guess business is commercial?
  6. We have three socks at Gawler and they often have a different opinion on wind direction.
  7. ACMA - probably haven't got the staff or equipment due to Government cutbacks. Where I work, we can't do half the stuff we want to do because there are no funds.
  8. Silly me, why didn't I think of that? Getting sillier by the minute....
  9. The pilot operating handbook states the weight of a particular Jabiru is 339kg and the arm is 209mm and the moment is 70818. However, my calculation is 339 x 209 = 70851. I suspect an error in the POH but am wondering if any body has another explanation. I'll ask Jabiru and I will check my own POH when next at the club.
  10. As long as you DON"T use CB radio wanker words. I have heard a few 'ten-fours' and 'come-back' used by newbies in the past.
  11. I'm only in my early 60's but I sure as hell remember being hungry as a kid, dressed in Salvation Army clothes and being called a pauper by other kids. I guess that's why I studied hard, and took any job I could at any wage. Here I am now with my own plane and hangar, no debts and could quit work tomorrow and still not struggle. (Oh, and to be fair, staying single helps).
  12. Yes. That's what we get for allowing bullies to drive wages out of all proportion. But, I won't enter into any debate because too many people can't control themselves.
  13. Yes, English is a weird language. A lot of what I was taught in the 60's isn't taught because of the dumbing down of education over the last thirty years. However, Professor Julius Sumner Miller thought education was being dumbed down over 60 years ago!
  14. I thought it was 1980. I was certainly taught in high school using the olden ways back in 72.
  15. I'm still waiting for engines that are not based on 70 year old technology. Where's the 'boom-shaker mark one' warp drive I expected by year 2000?
  16. Yep. I need a Canvas account. How do I create that without the join code?
  17. I want to do the L1 maintenance course but I cannot create the student account required. It wants a 'join code' but does not tell me where I get this and it rejects my RAAus membership number. Anybody got any suggestions?
  18. I used to fly in those sort of conditions in the Tobago but I would not do it in my Jab. Caught once on a hot and windy day and noticed a few times my wing tips just inches off the runway upon landing. It's not fun, not clever and not safe to deliberately fly in turbulence that has your plane rolling and pitching 45° and spilling your beer throughout the cockpit. But, having said that, your ride with the instructor appears to have taught you a good deal and not scare the crap out of you. I would really have liked to see the approach and landing!
  19. Who told you that? When I did the 'upgrade' that is, installed that large ugly fin at the back, I did a new calculation on the CoG. I would say everybody did this.
  20. My bad!!! (as they say these days). My card and paperwork arrived today in the mail. The other 'paperwork' is the email I received and printed out. I hate getting old....
  21. Well ,here we are in 2016 and I got my rego certificate but no card. Have I missed a memo or something? I'll ring them later today (Tues 6th Sept 2016) to find out what's happening.
