  1. Yep skippy, I don't think I'm that good either. So go ahead, if you have room on the panel. What harm could it possibly do?
  2. I don't agree that 2 ASI's are better than one. Which is correct if they disagree? You need a third one, which is getting ridiculous. A standard pre-solo glider check is to see how the candidate flies with the ( students) ASI covered up. What the instructor wants to see is about 5 to 10 knots faster than before. And a standard yearly check is the water manometer so you know the ASI is correct then.
  3. So do I need to get used to the idea of being always subject to scrutinising from the bureaucracy?
  4. Why do you have to give your callsign in the circuit? I reckon " Jabiru turning left finals for 18 Edenhope" says it better. Actually, only once have I ever had another aircraft anywhere near, and this was a croppie who was miles away. So nobody has ever complained. Who would have time to look at callsigns ? Why would it matter what the callsign was if you hit him? Well Dad I might be, ( of Dad n Dave fame ) but I have flown in busy circuits. So I would add " Number 3 behind a Cessna and another Jabiru " if it helped.
  5. Did that army duck use duck tape or duct tape to keep water from leaking in at the front?
  6. Low cost? har har I guess everything is low cost when you are spending somebody else's money.
  7. They could use the radar information to make sure that aircraft don't have mid-airs OR they could use it to increase their control. I am sure the latter takes over because of the way in which they police vacant airspace.
  8. Sorry to be negative, but the fitting of such a thing will enable them to police us closer. The only people who have ever got into airspace trouble around here did so because they had left their bloody transponders on. In one case, that airspace had not been used since airlines stopped flying piston engines. Without the transponders, they would not have ever known enough about the "violation" to make trouble.
  9. Yep if you are going to park a Jabiru outside, the best covers are a good idea. Personally, I reckon parking anything glass outside is a bad idea. GRP is strong against mechanical loads ( except crushing loads ) but is attacked by UV. IF you are sure that it must be stored outside then a metal plane will fare better.
  10. I have actually used a magnetic compass for real. Sometimes on a good gliding day, the cu's have a dome and the lift is great up there but you have then to fly under the cloud or through the cloud to move on. If through the cloud, then you have a few seconds of blind flying. the old magnetic compass was the thing you used to head off on the right bearing, and the ASI and the turn-and -bank helped too.
  11. I'd recommend you buy a Jabiru, but a lower hour one might have less of the problems RF guy has alluded to. Again I announce my bias... i currently own 2 Jabirus
  12. If you are not going to do your own maintenance, then you may not be a suitable candidate to own an RAAus plane. Personally, I reckon that you learn a lot from going to maintainers school and then doing your own plane, but I am biased. Anyway, you are doing well so far in seeking advice here before rushing in.
  13. I'm very cautious in real life. Once I turned down a chance to fly a Gruneau Baby vintage glider. I was worried that I might do a real bad landing and I didn't like the lack of crash protection and the upright seating position. Another time, I turned down the chance to be passenger for a Chipmunk aerobatic flight. I was worried about the 60 year-old mainspar and whether it had any corrosion or not. What a coward, I hear you guys thinking....
  14. The first flight after a service is a test flight, and you have done this well. Personally, I suspect the ASI and you can check this out with a water manometer... we used to do this on a glider annual. Except for the static line, and you have got good advice to check this. /
  15. I have a great fear that " access to CTA " will be associated with a "user pays" deal that I sure don't want. I have zero desire and need to fly in CTA.
  16. My son has a Lancair, and according to most , has done a harder training course to fly his VH Lancair with retracts. Here's my question.... could he ( in theory ) fly my Jabiru solo? What are the legalities?
  17. There was a lot who advertised family trusts as a way of being too poor to attract big claims. I don't think it worked cos they have not advertised lately. Does anybody know the story?
  18. I reckon its foolish to take any passengers, even with the " at your own risk " sign. But I like taking passengers and figure the risk of flying them over wheatlands is not so high. So I do it and so far there has never been a problem. Just today I took a passenger who was ecstatic about the flight. I never told him anything.
  19. There was a video " 180 seconds to live " where they flew up a valley and got trapped. Just like your training thing kg. Only not with the good result.
  20. Well I am reassured that the 3000 ft is not some sort of limitation after all. Here's what I am afraid of... I am heavily fined for " safety infringements" until I am bankrupted after which the eviction would happen. I can imagine that the lawyers would come with a radar trace of your flight . How could you deny this evidence? It would be my luck to get a judge who was secretly afraid of flying and he sure would get me where it hurts. And please tell turbs that I have never flown anywhere near the Adelaide control zone. But when they were re-examining this, I did put in a submission asking that the OUTER half of the 4500 to 8500 step be made a 6000 step. I have yet to receive a written answer, which put me in my place really good. The safety aspect was of course ignored.
  21. My problem is that while flying illegally ( that is, higher than the three thousand lousy feet ) the risk is NOT that I may have a midair with a stupid "flying under the hood" pilot. The probability of this is less than one in a hundred million. Here's what I am scared of... I come home to find a bunch of lawyers, protected by police with guns drawn, to find that I am being sued and eventually evicted, so me and the missus will suffer from exposure. That is why I would prefer to fly legally. It is more dangerous, but then being evicted is dangerous too. If you need more details of the probability calculation, let me know.
  22. Turbs, you conveniently forgot about the thousands of birds which use that low airspace.
  23. I just don't understand their motives... they are clearly trying to kill me, but why? They have a track record of killing people by causing them to fly into the ground, now we find that the rest of us are to be restricted to flying under 3000 ft! 3000ft is less than the start height for gliders in the bad old days... it is VERY low. The first thermal on track to get you up and going was the most important thermal of the day. Kingsford Smith said that the only time you have too much altitude is when you are on fire. Every foot above 3000 ft is useful. It gives you time and distance in the event of an engine failure. AND there are tens of thousands of soaring birds in that airspace.. How come this was put in? What history is there of midairs over 3000 ft enroute? I do have to admire their rat cunning though.... the layman is afraid of falling, so it appears to him that lower=safer. Now I am faced with an awful choice... fly dangerously low or fly illegally.
  24. That was the philosophy of the first Jabiru planes... a minimal aircraft, although I admit that things like the starter motor detracted from this a bit. AND I have to say that I really liked your stories about power supply in Australia Geoff-H. Thanks.
  25. That's the point skippy. They actually are guided by sentient beings who are looking out. Yes I know this is counter-intuitive. I too was impressed by how they acted, I thought they sure must have been in a hurry or else they didn't want to be involved and spend all day being grilled.
