  5. Im on a roll here so thought I would put my sticky feelers out. I would like to fit an Elgin or Waltham or the like 8 Day mechanical Clock in my Pietenpol. There are a few going around on Ebay but thought I might see if anyone had something in their shed that they may consider parting with for my project. It doesnt need to be working as I am a Watchmaker by trade although havent practised for many years. I still have contacts in the industry who can help overhaul it with me. let me know what you might have. I will look at anything including parts. Scotty
  6. Hmmm...now theres a thought...that could be a project.
  7. Bob...my last new years eve in NZ before coming to OZ I was determined to pipe the new year in with Old Lang Syne. I did it horizontal and a little tipsy on black Sambuca so I cant see why Port wouldnt work...
  8. ...actually just thinking, where do the guys at Omaka get that kind of stuff when they build one of their replicas?
  9. Have a look at the one Wayne gave the link to above. I like that style. I would like something in brass or metal of some kind that looks antique. Sorry Wayne been working double shifts the last few days so havent had a chance to email a photo of the one I have here. Scotty

  14. Hi all....I have a slip indicator I purchased from Aircraft Spruce but it looks too plastic and modern for a 1929 design plane. I have had a look around and cant find anything that "floats my boat". Does anyone know of a supplier where I may get something a little more era appropriate? Had a look on Ebay and Barnstormers already. Regards Scotty

  16. I was just reading the July edition of the EAA magazine which I was emailed the link to today. I was reading Tom Poberezny's column and it hit home what I have been trying to express over the last few months when we have been discussing how to get folk in to Recreational Aviation. Tom was giving an insight into why the EAA was founded in the first place some 70 years ago. It went like this: "Each year thousands of people join the organization, unaware of how EAA evolved over the past seven decades. The original purpose was to bring together people who had an interest in building an airplane, primarily for economic reasons. They couldn’t afford to buy one, so they converted their time and skills into building an airplane that created enjoyment while fulfilling a dream." I am very time poor with limited funds trying to raise a young family but having the time of my life building my family a plane. I dont have several hundreds of dollars to spend each weekend to go flying but I can spend some quality aviation time with my family in the garage learning and teaching them how to get in to recreational aviation. How times seemed to have changed...for the improvement of recreational aviation?...im not convinced... Scotty
  17. Hi Dexter...crikey I always need a flying fix and it was bliss to be up there again! Its been a while... Scotty
  18. Hi all....Gunnedah put on the most amazing weather for the first day of the Trial Introductory Flight weekend. There were various different disciplines at the airport from Gyrocopters to Warbirds to Gliders to Cubs to all sorts of RAA and GA aircraft. The day had a really relaxed feeling about it and there were flights conducted all day. The Scouts put on a great BBQ and I got to meet Dexter and Old Koreelah from the forum as well as a few other guys. I snapped a few photos which I will upload here. At one stage in the afternoon there was a queue of planes at the holding point including a King Air Ambulance, Stearman Biplane, J3 Cub, Yak52, Jabiru, Trike and a Gyro! Dexter took me for a fly in his Zephyr and what a great plane he has there! It was fantastic to be around like minded folk and get in the air again. My 11 year old Son went for a fly with Wayne in his Cub. Wayne was very generous in what he gave today. There was a good turnout from Scone and a few others who traveled from Nowra I believe. Its on again tomorrow so if you feel like a nice trip, im sure Wayne and the guys will welcome you. Weather is supposed to be the same. Scotty
  19. Was this "Heon"? Scotty
  20. Some interesting Radials there Nev. I recall seeing 3 Kinners for sale a few years back on Barnstormer in various stages of disrepair. Would have been enough to make one good one. Im in no rush as Im doing the Pietenpol but always like to keep an eye out. I could always use one of those Radials from OZ that we shall not mention but I like the 5 cylinder. Scotty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSEro1gVbOY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W_cDUtwS7s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65fROStzoJw
  21. Nev...with your experience, what could other options be for a 5 cylinder radial 100-150hp? I know about the Kinner but is there any others you know of? Scotty
  22. Hi Wayne....it is these aircraft that the woman regiments (Night Witch's) flew in the war, at night, dropping bombs. They flew so slow and low that the enemy couldnt follow them to shoot them down as they would stall. There is a good book that tells the story. I wish the NZ film producer Peter Jackson would do a movie on it. With his love of planes and facilities to build them it would be a spectacular movie! At the end of the war they were all ordered to be destroyed which they were. The few that survived were hidden in barns etc until well after the war. I was emailing a chap in Slovenia a year or so ago when I was building my Radio Control Polikarpov I-152 as I have the plans and spruce here already cut to build a 1/4 scale PO2. A guy at his aero club had just restored one and had recently flown. I have a video of it here. The Shuttleworth Museum has one which I believe was partly restored in NZ at Omaka. There is another one for sale on Barnstormers for $75000USD and has been on there for a long time. To buy that and get it out here would be $100000 I would imagine. I reckon I could build one for a lot less than that! As I stated before, the Shvetsov M-11 radial engine would be the hard / expensive bit. You dont have a spare one laying in your hanger....lol! Scotty
