  1. Thought I would kick this one off. Im building a Pietenpol Air Camper with a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair auto engine. The Corvair was used through the 1960's and is a horizontally opposed 6 cylinder air cooled auto engine. William Wynne in the USA has spent many years developing parts and techniques to convert these auto engines for aircraft use with great results. B H Pietenpol started using the Corvair engines in his home builds when they were introduced rather than the Model A Fords. There is a lot of good advice on the web about what you can incorporate into your Corvair build to attain the most reliability. For the standard conversion you are looking at 100HP turning a prop at around 3000RPM. The Corvair is a direct drive off the crank. I believe that a fully built up Corvair aero conversion with a fifth bearing will be around $7000. It could be cheaper or more expensive depending on what options you choose. I try to keep my website as up to date as time allows so you can follow my build. Feel free to ask any questions Scotty
  2. Hiya CFI...yes I couldnt agree more with you. EAA certainly serve their purpose very well in the USA. RAA could do well to take a leaf from their book. By paying my piddly amount to belong to the EAA, there is no need for one to google anything......its all on their website for the pickings. Scotty
  3. OME I hear what your saying but I just cant seem to go past the value in belonging to the EAA. You would be hard pressed to find such a comprehensive and historical collection of notes on every subject to do with our kind of aircraft. For a small sum of around $60 a year you get a magazine that cant be beaten and access to all the historical information as well. Why waste money reinventing the wheel? The information is out there and easily accessible via the web as well as a hard copy. I would love to see the RAA as a satellite organisation, with the Aussie touch, of the EAA. It makes sense. Why pay you or any one else to write articles that are already out there? Scotty
  4. I didnt realise you were living in a Nursing Home Brett?
  5. Purchased mine from the newsagent today.
  6. My darling loved ones gave me a digital video camera! The theory was to video the first flight of the Pietenpol. I get the feeling she needs it for something too.....
  7. That cockpit is dead sexy!
  8. Darky...I have a PPL and about 11 years ago I was over visiting family and took my mother up for a flight in a 172. I went through a flying school at Paraparaumu Airport on the west coast of the North Island. If I had of wanted to do a check ride I could have hired the plane but wasnt interested in ongoing flying so just took one of their FI along for the ride. The radio calls were a little different if I recall correctly so he did the radio and I flew the trip. Was a spur of the moment thing and it worked well. Went out around Kapiti Island and back. Was nice. I went back and did an hour aerobatics in their Tiger Moth after that. Was great! I believe that Moth is now at Wanaka working with a sight seeing place. www.classicflights.co.nz Wanaka is a beautiful place with lots of Aviation history as does Omaka. Scotty
  9. 0.090 would be a good start!
  10. I am researching suppliers of 4130 sheet metal. I thought I would put it out there and see if anyone knew of a supplier who might have offcuts at a reasonable price? Maybe someone on here may have some left overs from a project they may like to sell? let me know what you have. Scotty
  11. How does water jet cutting work and what materials?
  12. Hi Mark...I wasnt trying to be smart or anything it was just one of those things that "rung a bell" when I saw it. I had no idea if it was right or wrong hence why I posed the question. Im glad you posted them so now I know. Keep up the good work! Scotty
  13. Excellent...thanks guys! I can say I learnt something today! Scotty
  14. Hi Mark...thank you again for the pics. Im not being pedantic here or pretend to know what im doing but is it normal practise to use hose clamps on fuel lines like that in a plane? Please tell me if it is as im learning here and will come to a time when I will have to do that. I thought (scratching my head) that all lines like that had to be screw fittings? Scotty
  15. Mark...great pics as im thinking about this setup for my build. The breather at the top, does that vent out to the atmosphere higher than the main tank or does it vent into the main tank? Scotty
  16. Correct me if im wrong but I believe it was said in this particular accident that it was low level, high bank and maybe the prospective buyer was flying? No one will ever know but there lies 3 little things that when the fan stops, can cause things to turn to custard real quick. Its like I was taught not to turn back with an engine failure on take off at low altitude. I guess its the wrong place at the wrong time scenario. Maybe with a bit more height, it would have been a whole different ending. If only...if only....
  17. Hi Mark...the semi circle example above that the guy is holding is what im looking for. It was an example I found on the web. Wag aero has a similar one. Scotty
  18. I just found these on the net. Would a simple spirit level like this indicate with just a bubble or does it need the ball in it? I could dismantle this and easily mount it. Look pretty good too!
  19. This is something like I am looking for but maybe not as big? In brass would look lovely! Surely there is someone out there who sells them for the replica WW1 aircraft that are out there? I pulled the front cover off one I have here and its not a just a glass tube. There is an additional section at the top that was used to fill it I think and now serves the purpose of hiding the air bubble...Scotty
  20. ...Is that to hold the wings on...
  21. Hi Sain...Destiny posted me an old one he had and I was just thinking that. I could unscrew the case and remove the glass tube and make some brass ends for it.
  22. I dont have eyes in the back of my head...
  23. Hi Maj...yours looks nice! There are a few on Ebay, one even brand new still in its box for a little over $200. They are a nice little unit and I like this kind of stuff. Scotty
  24. Hi Dexter...your a gem! Thank you for the offer. The one I have is very similar to this one. I kind of like the semi circle style like Wayne gave the link to in a previous post. I really appreciate your offer though. I will owe you a ride when shes got air under her wings! Scotty
