1. I just joined the EAA and have to admit they look like a very professional organization! I know I am dreaming here but imagine if they started a chapter here in OZ. Employed someone here who knows whats happening locally and with the financial backing of the EAA. Im impressed with their organization! Scotty
2. Hi Winsor...thanks mate. I am using it as my build record also which I will need to produce before final clearance to fly. I cant spend as much time as I would like on it but I am getting there. Wont be far off ordering the fuselage Spruce, then it will start coming together! Scotty
3. The Night Witches flew alot of the Polikarpov PO2 bi-planes. All wood with a 5 cylinder radial up front. They flew so low and slow the enemy couldnt tail them, had to fly past or stall! I am planning to build one after finishing the Pietenpol. Anyone have a Kinner 5 cylinder laying around in their workshop? ...Scotty
4. Dead sexy!...and thank you for the rib stitching tutorial. I will be using it when covering time comes! Scotty
5. ausgee....when Jim Wills finally replies he is quick with postage once payment is received. He only accepts a bank draft so you will need to post that to him. The Pietenpols were very slow getting the plans to me. Took over a month! Hard when you are so enthusiastic having to wait...lol! Scotty :black_eye:
6. ausgee...I have 2 emails here so try them. He can be a little slow to respond. [email protected] [email protected] Scotty
7. Hi ausgee....get building boy!... Plans are available form the Pietenpol family in the USA. Jim Wills in the UK has a supplemental set which has to be used if building the Piet in the UK. Has a built up spar and a few other little changes which increases the MTOW to 1200 pound which is right on the donger for RAA registaration here in OZ. Because the Piet is built off plans, there are few parts available as everyone is different. There are guys in the USA and UK who make different parts like tail wheels and metal fittings but just be sure what you are buying. The legal issues? Are you registering RAA or GA? That is the determining factor. I will register mine RAA so as I built the plane and engine, I can service it myself rather than paying a LAME....or you say you are a LAME anyway so what ever suits your personal situation. On my site lists all the suppliers I have bought stuff from. Spruce is available here and works out about the same as bringing it in from the USA with the freight. Anyway if you have anymore specific questions just ask. Scotty
8. Ausgee...check out my Piet build. Scottys Pietenpol Air Camper Build Scotty
9. Hi Dexter...yes please keep us informed on how his engine went with the TBI carb. Brett...im not sure if these Ozzie ones come with the different needles. Worth investigating. Don...I dont see the TBI as reinventing the wheel. Its another option available to me here in OZ. Sure I can get a MAS-3 from the USA but if these TBI are as good as suggested, well I want to investigate it. They look simple to set up and run...if they work. I dont need it now so have the time to hear experiences from others who have tried them. Thanks guys Scotty
10. Hi Brett......the problem of fuel flowing out after engine shut down is a big problem as far as I am concerned. Another type has a regulator which supposedly overcomes this issue. No vacuum - no fuel flow. I guess I am struggling with the idea that one carb can cover a range of engine capacities with out being able to be "re-jetted" to suit MY particular application as can be done with a traditional carb. There has forever been so much dancing around this subject and no one will say 'I have one and this is how I have found it", preferably a Corvair . Is it only the Aerocarb that cant run on Avgas? What damage does it do too it? Scotty
11. Hi Paul...I have just bought some Hoop Pine Ply off Zenith Timbers in Brisbane. They may have a source for Hoop planks maybe? Regards Scotty
12. I am having these on again off again thoughts with regard to the various TBI Carbs on the market. I am looking for a carb for my Corvair conversion I am installing in my Pietenpol Air Camper build. What would be ideal is to chat with someone who has fitted one to a Corvair and what the results were. I know there has been discussion on these here in the past but no actual feedback. What are the negatives of them? The MAS-3 carbs have been used on the Corvair's but I like the positives of these TBI's but am not 100% convinced yet. The ones I have looked into suit a wide HP range and I am trying to figure out how you can adjust the high end mixture. In a normal carb you can change jets to suit. These TBI's dont have that option. How do they know what the exact fuel mixture needs to be or is it an air flow / pressure thing that does it automatically. I know how the TBI's work with the little holes on the meter bar and how more are uncovered as the slide is retracted but I thought it would need to be more of an exact science than that. Anyone have one of these? Scotty
13. Hi James...look under the links section of my website and Tom's Number is listed for Spruce. Nice guy and nice Spruce! Scotty
14. Hi James...if your in OZ I can put you on to a good supplier of Spruce for aircraft building. I purchased from this guy for the Pietenpol Air Camper I am building. Scottys Pietenpol Air Camper Build Scotty
15. I have a full size set of J-3 Cub replica plans & build manual built using Spruce. They are for sale if anyone is interested. I decided on a Pietenpol Air Camper. Scotty
16. One of those dogs that yaps all the time you just want to shoot when your next door neighbour has one.
17. Wood Hi Pete...I contemplated that last weekend actually. I purchased some Tassie Oak for my jig to hold the spruce for my build. The pine there was to crooked to be any good. The oak was straight but seems very dense and heavier than the Spruce I have here. Smells nice too! As I was told when organising mine. The Spruce is a small part of the cost of the whole plane. The Spruce for my Air Camper will be a little over $1000 so is it worth trying to find an alternative...probably not but thats your choice. There is a guy here in Newcastle that can supply Spruce in what ever size you need. What are you looking at building? Scotty
18. Hi Bruce...its been a few years since I completed my exams but BAK, PPL, CPL and IFR were not that tricky. Have a thorough knowledge and you should get it. ATPL was a whole different kettle of fish! At the time I did mine the word going around was the exams were being written by an ex Malaysian Airlines Captain? who had one aim in life, that was to make the ATPL exams so hard, tricky and deceiving that no one could pass them! At one stage you had to pass all seven ATPL exams at the same time. They then decided that you had 3 years to pass them all, one at a time if you liked. Dont go in to them thinking you can "wing it", make sure you know and understand your knowledge. Scotty
19. Hi all......anyone run a truck between Brisbane and Tamworth? I am looking for collection of 2 sheets of plywood from brisbane for delivery to Tamworth for my Pietenpol build. Scotty
20. I would like to hear about anyone using one. I am wanting to use one with my Corvair but waiting to hear how they perform. Scotty
21. Stunning Gordon...it reminds me of the Lane of entry out of Bankstown early in the morning past Hornsby. I remember the feeling of why I love to fly! Thanks mate! Scotty
22. Hi Nev...yes..im picking up what your putting down. I certainly dont take these things lightly and have better things to do with my time, like building planes, than do courses just for "bragging rights". I have certs in motorcycle mechanics & small engine repairs. Have always worked on cars and all kinds of engines. Have built & flown large scale radio control aircraft. To be honest I wish I had of pursued being an Aircraft engineer many years ago. I have a lot of diagnostic tools & I am now building from scratch, my own aircraft and engine and have found there is little in the way of Level 2 folk in my area and thought by pursuing something like this, I could help myself with my own build as well as provide a helpful service to the many ultralight owners and flyers around my area. Anyway im not here to justify my desire, I have wasted enough time over my life listening to people who like telling me I cant or shouldnt do something, just was asking what the requirements were. I have since spoken to another friend who has answered this and I have found some info on the RAA site. Scotty
23. Thanks Dazza...will do some further investigation! Scotty
24. Hi all....im sitting here going through the forums and am wondering what has to be done to become an L2? What training is needed and what prerequisites are there? Does it need to be done full time or can you do part time study? I assume you would need a place to gain your practical. I have always been keen to look into it but never got off my backside to find out. Im building my own plane and engine so maybe its time to look in to it? Any help and advice would be appreciated. Scotty i_dunno
25. Hi Kevin...David Dew was my Embalming supervisor while I was doing my training. You may know my Cousin Ron Douglas. He was an Embalmer too at WFS but gone back to building again now I believe. Small world! Scotty
