  1. Hi Nev..yes your right but I like a challenge...lol! Scotty
  2. I agree with you CFI. I joined the EAA for fifty odd dollars easily online and get my magazine emailed to me at the same time as every other EAA member around the world and a website with more useful information on how to do anything I need to do. RAA needs to introduce a membership for NO magazine as an option or can the magazine all together and put what few articles that are in there on the website. Why cant RAA get on board with the EAA as its already done on their website and stop trying to reinvent the wheel. If businesses want to advertise here, do so on the new RAA website. Scotty
  3. This is going to be a long term thread as im collecting as much information as I can, especially technical and drawings for the Polikarpov PO2. While building my Pietenpol I am researching the viability of building a PO2 from scratch. The original had a Shvetsov M-11 5 cylinder radial engine and I thought the Kinner could be a substitute. Does anyone else know of a similar 5 cylinder radial around the 100-150hp range that maybe worth looking in to? I have a few technical manuals here in Russian but I can translate what I need through Google. I am keeping an eye out on Barnstormers for likely engines and they do come up every now and again. Dont ask why a Polikarpov, I just think these are gorgeous! Would be keen to hear from anyone who may have had anything to do with one or has any info I may not already have. Scotty
  4. OME...its a loaded gun really. You are flying it so do whats right for you. Bear in mind who may test fly it but a single seater shouldnt cause too much issue. I have made a cardboard mock instrument panel and have been playing with different scenarios. Some folk have emailed me and told me its all wrong but I listen and make my own decision. Scotty
  5. Mr Reid at the Natfly meeting said its been done before, didnt work. I believe its the only time in the year where you WILL get as many members together at anyone time. Its silly NOT to have it then. The members meeting this year at Natfly was proof enough for me. You cant dispute that unless someone can show me any other AGM that had several hundred members at it. If you really want to be involved in it, you will make the effort to get to Natfly. I drove 8 hours to get there. Back to building... Scotty
  6. Sounds like a good plan Dexter! I just spoke with Wayne on the phone and its really going to be something if it all goes to plan. Will be great to see everyone. At this stage im looking at going Saturday but again the weather will determine that. Scotty
  7. Thanks Dexter...I received a personal email from Wayne letting me know its on so hadnt seen that one. Thanks mate! If you guys go will it be the Saturday or Sunday? Scotty
  8. ...and then I wonder sometimes why its as painful as pulling teeth being a part of this Forum. Back on topic please...
  9. FLY!...I believe its more important to have where and when it is as the heading. If its causing you that much stress mate, delete it from you list of events. Most people on here already fly so that is why im targeting it as a flyin more than a "Learn to fly" event for the folk on here. Wayne has stated he is advertising extensively in the local papers and radio etc which is where a lot of the newbies will come from. I have nothing to do with the organisation of it. Wayne dropped me an email notifying me of it and I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for fellow flyers to get together on a day trip. Nothing more, nothing less. Call Wayne if you would like him to change the whole organisation of it...lol! Scotty
  10. Read my first post again. I couldnt spell it out any clearer. Headings usually dont allow for the extended version.
  11. Hi Dexter....call Wayne to clarify the details but im sure it is flexible. Its not an Airshow as far as im aware so folk will just need to slot in as we normally do. Its important we try and support these events as this is how we get new people involved and what better way than to drool over a variety of planes. Im talking Wayne through posting on here as I better not call him an old computer illiterate fart as he will beat me up but hes still feeling his way around this site. Scotty
  12. Hi all.....Wayne Mathews from Billabong Aviation located at Gunnedah Airport, with the support of Gunnedah Aero Club, is holding a Flyin weekend on the 25th and 26th June 2011. Wayne is passionate about establishing a RAA flight training facility at Gunnedah airport. It would be fantastic if we could get as many different aircraft to fly in and have a social chat with existing pilots and the new prospective pilots that Wayne and the other instructors that will be there conducting Trial introductory Flights (TIF's) with. There will be a sausage sizzle as well. Gunnedah is a beautiful area and provides a nice easy navex. Billabong Aviation is now approved as a flight training facility and those that went to Natfly this year will probably remember Wayne's fantastic forum on aircraft maintenance. Wayne has emailed me a flyer with all the details that I will attempt to upload on here. We have all been chatting lately about how to attract new RAA pilots so I hope as many as possible can flyin and give their support. 13. Merc..you are right. It is the Salmson AD9 radial engine. I went and had a look at the Pietenpol Scout today with camera in hand. I also collected the first of my laced and trued rims and im very happy with the result!
  14. A transponder could be your best friend if you find yourself lost or somewhere you didnt intend on being. Im sure the first question air traffic control would ask is do you have one and to Sqawk xxxx. Just one positive in having one! Scotty
  15. You actually managed to train one? Share the secret please!
  16. ...are you married to my wife as well...HA! I annoy her even more by reading it on my laptop in bed!
  17. Brett...they will email you a link to download it hot off the press! Around a 30mb download. The hard copy usually follows weeks later. I was hesitant subscribing to EAA at first as it is another subscription but I am cancelling my SAAA membership as it offers absolutely nothing! I was hoping that mag would be a good read but alas not! I love the EAA! Its a bargain too! Correct me if im wrong but isnt it about fifty odd dollars a year from memory? Scotty :clap2:
  18. Hi Brett...the thing that unimpresses me the most with the Aussie mags is there are very few "How to" articles. I dont only mean "how to build a plane" articles as not eveyone is into that but other aspects of aviation as well. They seem full of adds, which can be good if your in the market for something and millions of articles about going on a flying trip. I love the EAA homebuilder videos on their website and the "How to" articles in the mag. Kitplanes isnt too bad either. Scotty
  19. EAA magazine rocks! I sometimes wish that the EAA would take RAA under its wing and we could be a sister organisation with all their benefits and knowledge. Scotty
  20. Mark...I just found some on Ebay For $10 delivered. I know your probably going to frown on me...hehehe :DirtDOG: Scotty
  21. Hi Mark...do you have these empty packs? Interesting you mention about a eneloop charger. I fly radio Control and use eneloop in all my gear. I just charge with a Nimh charger. Is this wrong doing this? Your right, I charge the Vertex in the supplied desktop charger and the batteries do get very hot. Thanks for the advice! Scotty
  22. Hi Mark...it is with only the battery and it is approx 2 years old. Does it sound like I need a new Batt? Whats the best way too test them under load or are the symptons conjucive with a dying battery? Can you pull the individual cells out of the battery holder and replace them or is it a throw away item? I hate throwing stuff away just for the sake of it. If I can I would rather replace the batteries in the holder. Scotty
  23. I am experiencing the exact same thing right now but with a Vertex 220. I am thinking maybe the battery is dying? I put a multimeter on it yesterday and its still reading 7.8 volts from memory. I know this doesnt show if its dying under load though. Scotty
  24. I got the hubs back from the local engineers yesterday who turned a little from the inside of the Oilite bearings to fit the axle. Today I dropped them off at the powder coaters. He said they will be ready end of next week. Once I get these back I will visit the motorcycle shop and have it laced and trued and work out a time to visit his Piet. Photos then hopefully. Scotty
