  1. Sorry....9535 nautical miles out.....lol.
  2. "My fuel costs are roughly 40% of those for other pilots"...... RAA, 30/04/2019 So...... where do I sign up to THAT rebate system? The bullsh!t gets so deep you need wings to stay above it.... Maybe they should add: "If you're not an RAA member, you don't have to pay $245 membership" " If you're not an aircraft owner, you don't have to pay $185 registration" "If you do not fly any aircraft at all, your aircraft costs will be zero." People can make up anything they want .....
  3. Also the power (wattage) plays an important role. You can only go so far with efficiency. Serious light output requires serious energy input. Not much different to fuel in an engine. If you want bigger power, with a bigger engine, ultimately you need to feed more fuel. Best to determine your allotted power quota to the lighting system first and make sure your system can keep up. More power is larger, heavier wiring too. I keep my lights flashing 100% of the time. I don't see the point of not keeping them on. A light not on is good for nothing...
  4. The Austro engine has a cast iron block to allow for rebuilds....
  5. I like the idea of twin turbos on a "split bank" type engine. It cleans up so much and is a more compact setup. Having them high allows straight oil drain to the sump without scav pumps and hoses. Exhaust is extremely simple. Oil feed system does not need valving to stop syphoning/draining. (914 has a check valve on inlet to turbo. When it fails the turbo fills with oil when not running )
  6. Me too..... just trying to kill the emails (I get enough of them) but keep the alerts and get the "oops..." message when trying to save.
  7. Maybe there is going to be a new era of diesel (Jet A) auto conversions coming into the aviation engine experimental arena? The next step for Viking, Momentum, et al........ So......who wants to borrow me a mill or so...... to be the first cab off the rank...lol.
  8. Diamond have chosen the Continental CD 300 for their DA 50 aircraft....(far bigger and more powerful than the Austro engines) Hopefully the success of these engines will trickle the technology down into more affordable engines.... [/url]https://www.diamondaircraft.com/en/about-diamond/newsroom/news/article/diamond-aircraft-da50-program-changes-and-new-engine/ Continental CD 300.... https://www.continentalmotors.aero/diesel/engines/cd300.aspx Ok, not a MB, but a large "V" config diesel.....
  9. I was watching you tube vids of a bloke flying around the world in a Diamond twin (DA 42 NG). My interest in the engine was struck on 3 occasions. First at start up, it just kicked and ran dead smooth like starting a car. (Full single lever FADEC operation, so easy ) Second, he was filling up with Jet A but it was obviously not a turbine, and third when he had a prop strike (on a raised landing light) and only required the wooden MT prop blade to be replaced (geared engine). Lucky as it was at some remote island in the pacific. The engines are Austro AE300 modified Mercedes car engines. They now have an 1800 hr tbo Austro Engine AE330 receives EASA certificate for 1,800 hour TBO For me, these engines are everything I think an aviation engine should be and a finger to those traditionalists that think it can't be done. Welcome to 2019....and the 21st century. Interestingly it looks a bit like the "slant" Suzuki set up that Aeromomentum use...
  10. Ha ha.... That's been on the "books" since about 2008..... Not much of a problem one up, with the Rotax. As a 2 seater and/or the various V6's then VH Exp definately....
  11. Hmmm...52kts. I wonder if the 600kg limit brings it down to 45?
  12. Aveo lights look so nice they are almost "art", but OMFG ...... the prices!
  13. As long as the Grumman is flown within RAA requirements I don't really care. Single seat, 460 + 80kg pilot is 540kg. Leaves 60 kg fuel (80 odd litres) for an all up 600kg. Not bad... When you look at some of the older registered european 450/520/540 kg ultralight aircraft, it's not that much different and plenty of them are 2 seaters. Many pilots are "ctaf pilots", and just enjoy a solo morning or afternoon local flight. I don't hold that against them...
  14. I know a couple of pilots that get sick as a passenger but are find as PIC.......
  15. Got a couple of 25 watt LED small spotties wired up inside the cockpit to a flasher/indicator unit. A 3 way toggle switch allows on/off/flash. Need to be careful your electrical system can provide the power. I can confirm it is bloody bright. Blinding if you're standing in front of them. 17. I took my 10 year old nephew up for a local once. He'd been up before with no problems. This time he started to get upset with pain in his ears. We were inbound on decent and I guess they were a bit blocked with the pressure building and not equalising. I changed course and regained height, then decended at a slower rate and managed to get down ok..... I now carry a vicks inhaler Vicks Inhaler for any future incidents with myself or passengers.
  18. Just to be clear for anyone reading this thread, it is just a generic chart and not Foxbat specific.
  19. I would say mid to high 20's. Lots of variables, fuel & pilot weight (2 different tank capacities. 80L or 112L), flaps or clean, with OAT(density altitude) and weather/wind in the mix.
  20. If a manufacturer claims it is a normal maintenance exercise to rebuild heads and reseat/replace valves and valve seals in 2019 before tbo, they are abusing the definition of the term "tbo" as an excuse for a poorly designed and/or manufactured engine. These problems were sorted long ago with modern metalurgy, casting and machining techniques.
  21. The 3 things that make the world go around...... Power, control and money.....
  22. You may still get the smell through the header tank. I have no header tank, only wing tanks (not a Jabiru). But better fuel hose will obviously make it better.
  23. Yes, staying at height over a field is a safe place to be I think. You can look down and pick the aircraft in the circuit.
  24. It would take new management, with a mentality to drag Jabiru into the 21st century.....
  25. Very interesting. I've never seen one....
