1. Just throwing it out there, but I imagine the prop pitch is set correctly?
2. And also, the average pilot (and friends) flying in are probably on a much better budget than the average backpacker. The short sightedness of these bureaucrats is bewildering. ....
3. One of the core fundamentals of the RAA is the ability to do your own maintenance.... I hope this is not going to be watered down..... The fact that aircraft are not constantly "falling" from the sky for maintenance/mechanical reasons tends to prove current systems are pretty solid. Most owners know their limitations and readily seek advice and assistance when required. All good. By far, the weakest link tends to be the pilot, not the aircraft.....
4. Ummm.....24 rego does not need certified engine or avionics...
5. Australia is probably the ideal country for "big sky" theory to work. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_sky_theory As Thruster said, around airports is where you really need to be on the "ball". Be aware many ultralights, microlights and gyro's have no transponder or electronic devices at all, and fly happily all across Australia. (I do think no radio is a bit foolish though...) I flew for 6 years without a transponder. I generally stayed away from C/D and congested airspace routes, but it was not illegal and I was aware of my situation with heightened alertness. I now have mode S and adsb out primarily for long trips across Aus which is great!
6. My friend had his stop working on his ipad after an ozrunways update. Ozrunways were reluctant to offer any expanation or solution. They ended up refunding and he purchased the Stratus which he is very happy with. These devices do not work with the android version yet.... and it's been a long fustrating wait!
7. Yes, it was him. As a fellow pilot in WA, I communicated with him on this forum briefly. I believe he was an english immigrant. https://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/it-is-with-sadness.3045/
8. The fuel supply and metering systems are quite a bit different to the oil system. A dedicated fuel pressure regulator would probably be the solution to any fluctuations and supply a steady pressure/flow. Manufacturers don't obviously see the need and complexity but it would be interesting to try one.
9. In the old heads, the temp sender was dry and it is called "cylinder head temperature" (CHT) In the new heads the temp sender is wet (in the coolant) and is called "coolant temperature". So I guess it could leak past the sender seal and leak. I thought at some point Rotax removed the recommendation for waterless coolant? Perhaps when the new heads were introduced.
10. Carl, is it a ELT or PLB you really need? I like PLB's as they are generally smaller and more portable. You can carry them on your person as you move from aircraft to aircraft and also travel with them in your car or hiking.
11. I was thinking about my small oil pressure fluctuations, especially at lower rpm (in a Rotax) and thought how great it would be if dynon added some sort of adjustable electronic buffer in their system to smooth out pulses and fluctuations....
12. I was thinking the same thing. I have used pure teflon which is quite soft. I think a harder mix would be perhaps better for this purpose? See "Filled ptfe" and "Modified ptfe properties" in link below https://www.fluorotec.com/news/blog/the-properties-and-advantages-of-polytetrafluoroethylene-ptfe/
13. Generally these systems are taking "in cowl" air which is already hot. Effectively having permanent carb heat ON. When you have a sealed airbox taking outside "cool" air it's more important to have a carb heat option.
14. You may want to look at doing the water pump seal while getting the oil seal changed. It would be unfortunate not to replace it, and have it fail in the near future. ....
15. A local Flight Design (not a CTLS) just had it's generator changed. And yes, it's FULL of electronics...... multiple dynons and gps etc Not a cheap job either. I think over 4 grand.....We also put it down to simply overloading.... I'm surprised Rotax haven't made an upgraded generator. (Not counting the belt driven one which may not fit most cowls..and probably cost an arm and a leg) Edge pergormance make one as an extra generator at 32 Amps, which to me seems a bit excessive but probably better than not enough. 16. Not sure if this is a help. Shows capacitor connected to "C" and earth. And 40 V capacitors are much better than the 25v.... http://pointsforpilots.blogspot.com/2012/12/testing-rotax-912914-generator-and.html
17. A minimum of 200 rpm is required to "fire" the engine. This is part of the safety mechanism to allow you to "burp" the engine without it firing. Alot of engines seem to be wired with smaller than minimum spec starter cable size too. It should be 16mm2 cable minimum (mulitstrand/flex) and the further the battery is away from the starter, the larger the cable size. I've seen people try to start a rotax with a half flat battery and (as you alluded to) there is the risk of damaging the sprag clutch which is a 3 to $4000 repair. Best to always start with a fully charged battery.
18. Sounds like it is on the way out and coming to life when warming up a bit. Try pre heating it with a hairdryer a bit and see if it works straight away. This is a common testing method.
19. "Copy base....ahh....have a change of underwear ready..."
20. I always had a "thing" for the red head in the B52's...... back in the day....lol
21. I would imagine going extra distances is where the "range extender" comes in to play. Daily driving and charging overnight, the extender is never used. However, needing extra range, the extender can be fired up using petrol, diesel, gas or whatever to replace some of the charge being used... Like octave, I think the technology is here now but probably the acceptance is not. https://www.mahle-powertrain.com/en/experience/mahle-compact-range-extender-engine/
22. I've never liked hybrid vehicles. They just seem to carry the worst of both systems.... I would much prefer pure battery with a dedicated "range extender" engine...
23. Can't get the site to "stick". Keeps dissappearing.....
24. That's very true. And the reason there is no "middle of the road" local/state airshows? CASA rules and regs (forced insurances) make it too expensive in relation to the potential income, making it unviable for small clubs/organisations unless there is a major sponsor willing to fork out.
