  1. Good question .... Don't know the answer, but Jabiru did extensive spin testing on the J400, as shown somewhere in this video. Something like 100 spins.
  2. All BOM aviation services require a user name and password - these are both freely available on the BOM website. The user name is bomw0007 and the password is aviation! EDIT: beaten by a minute!!
  3. Not a stupid question at all! Seems to me that there is no evidence to suggest interference with aircraft systems from mobile phone use. And the ban on mobiles in aircraft in the US is from the FCC not the FAA (ie it plays merry hell with the cellular system, hence the FCC's involvement). Having said that, have you ever heard a continuous clicking sound in your headset? That (I'm told) is from your mobile or that of your instructor - annoying but hardly an issue. I've had it once or twice, but turning off our mobiles fixed it.

  5. There are those of us can remember in the late 60's or early 70's when he had his delivery van driving around Sydney labelled "The Electronic Dick". Made the little old ladies blush! A great marketer (his ads in the electronic mags all had a black page border, so you could flick straight to his pages) and a passionate defender of aviation.
  6. The airports involved are: Lethbridge, Coffs Harbour, Horn Island, Yarrawonga, Deniliquin, Parafield, Karumba, Bamaga, Mount Gambier and Point Cook. Apart from money hungry oil companies, is this a sign of GA in decline - a bit of a spiral, declining pilots and hours flown leading to cutbacks leading to decline, etc etc.? Seems to me that RA has an important role to play here in encouraging people back into aviation.

  9. I think the answer is probably neither. I think it is based on his perception of risk. But like you I am very concerned at the new direction CASA is taking. It is seemingly becoming more risk averse while somewhat paradoxically increasing risk with some of its decisions (eg the GAAP changes which come with their own risks and which in any case Airservices will struggle to resource within the time frame). I am also puzzled by the new "decisiveness". The 103 changes have been stuck in the bureaucracy for a long time now without anything happening. So I applaud the new CEO for acting to bring the stalemate to an end - except he hasn't. I would have thought an outright "NO" to the CTA proposals would have been an honest (and arguably appropriate) response. Instead we end up with no decision masquerading as a decision - we're too busy, bugger off for a year or so. If you don't intend to give us CTA access, then tell us, and we can move on and make our own decisions re aircraft and PPL etc. But don't leave it hanging. Same with the weight issue - CASA says they can see no reason against the weight increase, but again defer the decision. Lots of us are making decisions on new planes - don't leave it hanging! So I'm really confused. On the surface we have a new (and welcome) decisiveness. Scratch the surface and it seems to be same old same old. I'd really love to be at Gympie, because it seems there is a real opportunity for a positive exchange without emotions getting in the way. But I can't be there, so I have two questions. My really broad brush policy question would be along the lines of how CASA sees recreational aviation developing into the future - long term do we see a split along the lines of recreational vs commercial (so that the recreational component of GA is eventually absorbed into a recreational framework - thus we can either go for a private licence for recreational flying or a commercial licence for GA) or do we perpetuate the current system based on the aircraft we fly? My other question (and it relates to the weight debate) is how CASA is going to handle the ageing GA fleet. This is a huge issue, with lots of old GA planes rotting out in the fields of our aerodromes. In one sense, I'd hate to see these C150 (and other) hulks on the RA register so I think the new CEO has actually made the right decision! BUT, CASA seems impotent in dealing with this issue. Just my 2c!
  10. Yep, I reckon it's a tough gig, and as I said a fine line. So I don't envy him his job. And perhaps, to effect change, you need to over-correct at first, to send a message to the organisation that things have changed and we can't defer things forever. The dinner will be a terrific opportunity to understand these issues, right from the top.

This is my concern - I had a colleague who was a RAAF psychologist and he observed that military pilots have trouble engaging with people because their job requires them to make instant decisions (I see a problem, I HAVE to make a decision and I HAVE to make it NOW) without any fancy consultation $hit. The snap CASA decision on GAAP is a good example of this process - to my mind there was no real urgency in making changes, but CASA seemed to be panicked into making a decision for the sake of being decisive. And that decision may well have unforseen safety consequences, which consultation might have avoided. It's a fine line between decisiveness and procrastination - but methinks we may have gone too far to the snap decision end - we can see that in the RAAus decisions, instead of letting the change process run (albeit at snail's pace) CASA decided to be decisive and kill the process (ironically in the process ending up not being decisive at all, by just saying let's defer the decision). 'Tis a worry, I reckon ....

  14. Open to heaps of interpretation methinks ...... So if I call in at the local flying school on my way home from the Yarra Glen pub (under 0.05, so OK to drive ) with my RA licence on me, and CASA fronts up and tests me - then I'm gone over 0.02. Even though it's very dark outside and I'm VFR only and I have no intention of flying. Lots of grey areas, not thought through at all well despite the best of intentions. I heard one flying school in Sydney was asking all visitors to sign the book saying they had not been drinking. That's the end of the end of day hangar pi$$ups ...:black_eye:
  15. I presume you're talking the "whiz wheel" type of thing? I got a Jeppesen E6B so I could work through the exercises in the books although I'm not sure whether I would really use it in practice. Then again, I grew up on slide rules before calculators were invented, so it's kinda second nature I guess. I've also got the Niborex Electronic version for my PDA which is quite useful.
  16. My old company used to distribute pharmaceutical grade super-glue for veterinary use as dazza says, for gluing up wounds. Works just fine, and I've used it myself on occasions. And, in case you're wondering, pharmaceutical grade = same thing, just 100 times the price!

  18. Lucky bastard!! Last few days have been beautiful for flying, and I had a couple of lessons booked, really looking forward to nice, calm, cloudless skies after a few cancelled lessons due to bad weather.. And then my instructor goes and gets sick on me! So I spent my days looking up at the lucky buggers flying overhead to Moorabbin or north to Kilmore Gap! Damn

  20. Ouch - in real terms, that's a lot of flying lessons ... There's a wreckers in Canterbury Rd Kilsyth has lots of parts, might be lucky.
  21. Same rules apply for both GA and RA I think. SARTIME or flight note needed if VFR and: 1. RPT or charter 2. overwater 3. designated remote areas 4. at night, beyond 120nm from departure aerodrome Otherwise no legal requirement, but I would always leave details with someone!
