    Hi folks, This video is absolutely brilliant. No matter how much we love flying, sometimes even the most passionate among us can briefly lose sight of the magic that drew us to fly in the first place. A wonderful video of 6-year-old Lainey Woodson taking her first airplane ride with her father, Bobby, in the family's 1946 Aeronca Champ. Enjoy! Cheers Neil

    Hi Doug, Absolutely brilliant! Vintage Aviation enthusiast heaven! I was lucky enough to go to an Air Pageant at the Shuttleworth Collection last year when the weather was kind and we saw the really old (Edwardian) planes flying. I captured some video on my old stills camera, but obviously it was nowhere as good as this! Thanks for posting - sheer delight! Cheers Neil

    LOL - and there are people who fly Gazelles (which cruise at 70-75 kts) on a HP endo as the AI green arc goes up to 86kts (maximum structural cruising speed). If the Sav cruises at 85-90 knots how does it classify as LP? This just exposes the whole 80 knots LP/HP thing as a farce. Neil

    Hi John, I have a cheap and cheerful Garmin 196 - can be used in both plane and car (although I have not used it in the car). Has no colours or fancy stuff, but you get what you pay for. I am sure there are others too. Cheers Neil

    Hi Octave, Looks like your dad really enjoyed it! It always saddens me that I got my pilot certificate after my dad had passed away - he would have been the first to come up for a flight. My mum always said she wanted to come up for a flight too, but she was in her 80s and living in the UK, so that never happened either..... Make the most of it. Cheers Neil

    Hi Mark, Having been to the last couple I would say if you are considering taking up flying then the best value would probably be just talking to the pilots there. Most are very friendly and helpful, and should fill you in on the practical side of flying, owning or building etc, depending on what aspects interest you. Cheers Neil

    Hi Mark, Absolutely brilliant! Brought back memories of building model planes out of balsa wood, tissue paper and dope when I was a young lad in the UK. The worst incident was when one of them landed in Leigh Creek one Christmas Eve, and I had to wade in to retrieve it. The water was bloody cold, being UK Christmas Eve, and my mum was NOT impressed! But at least my plane was able to fly another day (albeit with surfaces a bit warped...) Cheers Neil

    Thanks for posting the video, Mark. The guy is very brave to do a film so others can learn, and really think about whether they should fly. All the lectures in the world do not bring home the point as forcefully as a real incident like this. I hope he can feel less guilty in the future. I shall certainly be questioning myself before I fly rather more than I have done in the past. Neil

    Hmm - times on NOTAMs are UTC (GMT), so you would add 10 hours (if in Aus Eastern time zone). Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOTAM - example given for London Heathrow 0609050500 0704300500 FROM: 05:00 UTC 5 September 2006 UNTIL:05:00 UTC 30 April 2007 ....still doesn't answer why it is from 13.29 local time though....     According to the film you posted the ground where a bomber came down becomes contaminated with phosphorus from the incendiaries and little will grow - and anyway I'm not sure I would want to eat stuff grown in phosphorus-laced earth .....I might start to glow in the dark....

    Agree absolutely, Maj. If we can't learn from other people's misfortune then there is more likelihood it will get repeated..... I am also sure the relatives and friends of the unfortunate person would take some comfort in knowing that any relevant information that may prevent a repeat occurrence had been passed on. Neil

    Extremely sad news. My condolences to the lady's family and friends..... Let's hope we hear quickly what the cause was so we can all learn from it. Neil
