Airstrip with great pub, within easy walk and pub food and accomodation. A bit west of the Clermont-Charters Towers highway but a good option to know about if the weather should turn bad on that route. On that note most of the cattle stations in the area would have a place to land if you needed it , but you'd be assured of a beer at the Mt Coolan pub. It is a great resort but have not landed on their strip. I checked its availability in July this year, in the end I didn't need it but I was assured by the management that it was available and in good condition. bones Posted December 19, 2011 Share Posted December 19, 2011 Middleton Pub, about half way from Winton to Boulia, ok the official dirt strip is about 5km across the creek, but there is a real good bitumen one right at the front(no power lines ect, all genny power), ol mate usually got his R22 parked there. The Lynd junction, need real short TA and landing though, good for a feed and beer, same type of bitumen strip there too. Jeff Gordon Posted January 25, 2012 Share Posted January 25, 2012 Flew to Brown Brothers Winery at Milawa last Sunday together with Debra's Tri-Pacer and Peter's Jabiru. Flew from Moorabbin over Coldstream, Taggerty, Eildon Weir (very full) and Mansfield. Six of us sat down to dinner at the Epicurean Restaurant to wonderful lunch and some of the passengers tried the local wines. Afterwards we were provided bicycles to go to the town 500m away to shop for Mustards, cheese and olive oil. Just a great day out. Interesting take off with plane full of goodies on a hot day, grass strip, 90 degree crosswind @ 5 - 10k. Took a longer ground roll than the Maule is used too. No little pudles, or big ones for that matter, anywhere in Victoria. Gotta say though that I had a great time whilst living in Myrtleford for about 10 months in 73-4. Worked for one of the local builders as a carpenter, and had a ball. Four young people in a Beech Musketeer flew down to the Lake Clifton Tavern for an afternoons fun. On the way home, they crashed into a paddock and their were no surviviors. The next day, a farmer discovered a lacerated dead cow in an adjacent paddock. It's possible someone may have forgotten the "bottle to throttle" rule. John. Where does common sense go out the door?..... at two people, or with four people involved. Peer pressure comes in to play here in a big way, with one individual not wanting to be the one to rock the boat for the rest, and put a dampner on all the fun. Everybody just goes along with the ride until tragedy strikes. It has also occurred of course with only one person involved, be it GA or whatever. It all comes back to the human factor and decision making. Realizing that we may not be fit to fly today, (too lubricated !) and would be better off leaving it till another day. Exercising good (not bad) judgement. We are all mortals and only human really, we just need to be aware of our own weaknesses and how they will effect our daily activities. This thread initiated by JG was more I think, in the spirit of adventure, rather than just simply recommending a place to have a beer or two. Of course after a hard days' cross-country you may certainly need a beer, however when we say 'pub' we really should be thinking overnight accomodation, after a couple of beers, so we can get up super-fresh in the morning for more adventure flying .........................................Maj... Forgot home!! Couple of pubs within walking distance of Dalby Aerodrome, or if you are feeling lazy, some one is sure to offer a lift' On the other side of the country, how about Forrest.... caretakers have a bar, food and fuel and when I was there last, great hospitality. Exactly correct, Maj. The list is especially meant for those travelling two-up in these little aircraft, so can't really carry full camping gear, or those who's partner refuses to sleep on the ground. I really prefer camping on deserted airstrips a long way from anyone, but it's kinda nice once in a while to have a couple of beers and a proper feed and a yarn with the locals. If you're camping at the airfield, bring your towel and have a freshup in the pub washroom, feels great!. The list has grown now so that when you first look at the map you'd think every airfield was suitable. But there's lots of country airfields too far for a comfortable walk and no taxi service, been there done that, with a cloud of mozzies for company..... Yeh, Dalby is a walk, but the airfield is about as close to town as it can be. Forest is a good one, and right where you might need a rest...
