Monto 2012!

Well, as you would already know (and if you didn't, you do now 022_wink.gif.2137519eeebfc3acb3315da062b6b1c1.gif) I went to Monto yesterday (Saturday) and had a good time! 012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

Started off with an early start from the farm and over the ranges to Kingaroy to pick up some mates there - one who is disabled and in a chair. Also fuelled up at the Roy, which is always scary in this thing.... ah_oh.gif.cb6948bbe4a506008010cb63d6bb3c47.gif

Departed the Roy and inbound Monto about 45 min later... the radio was non stop but upon arrival over head it didn't seem as busy as it sounded and we fitted in and made a landing, then was shown to our parking spot for the day.

Unloaded and we all went our various ways... caught up with Dexter and his Zephyr, Reg the Savannah man, and his faithful co-pilot/(salesman 020_yes.gif.58d361886eb042a872e78a875908e414.gif ) Steve - Rankamateur, Neil - Ballpoint246niner, Bill and his beauty blue Sav (well it has blue on it!), not to mention all the others I can't remember the names of, Sorry about that! Slarti of course, Mick the Skylark man, Mark - Kyle Communications, ah who else? Hmm... I missed Maj and Hongie by about 15 minutes as I had to leave a bit earlier than planned to beat the weather back home.

Dexter took me for a fly in his great little Zephyr during the day which was great fun, had a bit of a play around there - might make a small video up of that when I get a chance.

Had to leave around 2ish and head back to the Roy, made a bit of a grand departure by accidently hitting a runway light with my right wheel... slightly embarrassing, and sad to say the light didn't fair to well at all, obviously didn't like 1500 odd kgs knocking it off it's legs!! Not even a rub mark on the tyre though... they just don't make the lights like they used to, I'm sure of it! 035_doh.gif.37538967d128bb0e6085e5fccd66c98b.gif

Anyways, after confiding with the unicom chap about my misfortune, and telling them I'll organise a replacement, we set off bound for the Roy! Landed there a bit later with a 15kt cross wind according to the AWIS, didn't really feel like it, but it was pretty gusty! Dropped off my mates there and we left for home, arriving not long after. Put the plane away in the hanger and it started raining... so was pretty happy we made that, and timed it right! Gotta love modern technology and weather radar eh? 012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

Got a few photos, but not as many as I would have like, kept getting distracted and catching up with people! Was a great day though, and it was hard to leave so early in the piece. Pretty decent aircraft turn up if you ask me! 012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

Like I say Tomo, you are my hero HAhhah, and an inspiration too. Love the idea of the Tecnam taildragger but yes the cargo pod looks out of place and something about the way the main gear legs 'sit' doesn't look right, but hey, I m no expert..... I suppose if it does the job........ Would love to fly one...

Runway light............what runway light...... hahahahahahahaha, i like your honesty

Yes - The trailer in the photos was Mr & Mrs Flying Viz. We saw Tomo surrounded by a crowd of admirers, so we didn't butt in; caught up with the Isis Flying Club members; did lots of walking and drooling, caught up with Major Millard (he's taller than me) and Hongie. Met many others, builders, dreamers, pilots and partners. Went to the fabric & timber workshops, was running late for the Meet the CEO - was empty when we got there - anyone know how that went? Hardly took any pictures, kept forgetting, bought lots of raffle tickets to support the people who supported the Fly-in, and vowed next time to bring a plane or two (seem to remember doing that 2 years ago). Stalls were running out of things, which is a good indication that it was a success. Callide Valley Club had delicious strawberries and ice cream concoction and, when the weather turned cool, hot pumpkin soup. Pity about the weather - Planning already for 2014.

You really could have! Would have been great to catch up, but anyway, next time hopefully.

when I was learning to fly Tomo, if I taxied over any of the centreline taxi lights and hit one with the nosewheel, it cost a stubby.. in the very unlikely event anyone took out a runway light.... well that was a carton:buddies:..

Anyway, spending last weekend in Alice Springs looking at an aeroplane and spending 3 days at Lasseters, I wasn't game to stretch the friendship with the misses and head off to Monto.. saw a nice looking Zephyr stage through Dalby today off towards Inverell. I got to spend some time in a mates 210 today though.

Nice photos Tomo...I am not sure about your "Lightwing" photo...

That Sav does 97knots..

Which Sav? There are three in Tomo's pictures (actually four but one was taken from two different angles).

Yeah that was Dexter, I had some fuel in there for him to top up on his return trip home.

So that's why you didn't answer your phone.... 022_wink.gif.2137519eeebfc3acb3315da062b6b1c1.gif to busy tearing around in a pressurised 210, you're as bad as me. 003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif

Guest Maj Millard

Yes a great event for me personally, even though I was delayed a day getting there. Big surprise whilst picking Hongie up at Marion near Mackay was to finally meet Turbo who turned up with Donald Windsor, and was travelling by road through the area. Hongie and I had a good cruise down in the Lightwing via the Dingo Roadhouse with a 10 kt tailwind most of the way, on Saturday. On arrival overhead Dingo there were three other aircraft parked out the back of the roadhouse, also from Montpelier (Carbon Cub, Wittman tailwind and Pelican). They departed while Hongie and I were having a quick lunch and refuel.

The run down to Monto from Dingo was also nice, and the country not as challanging as I had thought from viewing it on GE..the night before.

Talked with Tomo as he was departing about 10 mins before we arrived in the Monto pattern...then nice to taxi in to parking to find that a parking spot had been held for me, amoungst the planes from the north...thanks guys and gals.

Great collection of aircraft on the ground with a good mix of GA and UL...old and new UL types. Drifters flying around with TIFs going on, in other types also. And the Dragon Rapide constantly cruising around gracefully overhead, also giving rides to raise funds for charity. It just seemed to fit it to the whole thing somehow. Did a lot of talking and meeting people, and didn't make any forums, most of which (especially CASA) had mixed reviews anyway. Run into Dex, flying Viz and hubby, Slarti, kyle comm, Rob Purvan, John Gordon (Cfi Emerald) and many other friends whom I hadn't seen in a while, and many new forumites. Bought a new 'manbag' at one of the stalls (go on, go on, everyone else has !).... Great pleasure in finding out that a friend whom I had given several rides to in my Drifter years ago, has taken up the challange and has become an active CFI at Bundaburg. Real nice to know I didn't waste my fuel or time there, in doing my bit for the sport !......

Great fly home in company with Cab Sav (Ian and Julie Wells) and a Jab 30 (Barry and friend from Bowen) in sometimes challanging WX, requiring carefull flight below 1000' a lot of the time. We flew Monto to Emu Park where we overnighted, and then on up the coast to our respective destinations. Monto is a really great spot for a fly-in, with heaps of grass parking and lots of room for future expansion, although I still wish it was a bit further north.

Unfortunatly a really great weekend was somewhat spoiled by the sad news Monday night about the missing DH84 'Riama' on it's return from Monto to Cabulture. Still hoping against hope there, at this late stage. What a sad loss indeed of fine aviation people, and a very, very historic aircraft that will be hard to ever replace..........................................................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif
