Head in the clouds Posted October 14, 2013 Share Posted October 14, 2013 Any probs using " rainex " on our Perspex screens.......bottle clearly states.....glass I've used Rainex on acrylic (perspex/plexiglass/etc) helicopter bubbles and Cessna windshields for many years. It works fine for me and repels water/provides good visibility in rain etc, just like it does for glass. Best applied in the shade as the rapid cooling that it causes as it dries is not good for the acrylic. Blown acrylic windshields are not under any particular stress so that is why they aren't affected by spilling fuel on them or applying Rainex or similar, or by cleaning them with methylated spirit (methyl alcohol). DO NOT USE it on curved polycarbonate (Lexan/Macrolon/etc) windshields, they may crack and split instantly just as if you spilt fuel on them. Polycarbonate splits and cracks aggressively if cooled rapidly while stressed. The curvature causes the stress and the evaporation of the Rainex (alcohol based) or the fuel is what causes the rapid cooling ... You can apply Rainex to flat polycarbonate panels - because they are flat they are not stressed so will not crack. facthunter Posted October 14, 2013 Share Posted October 14, 2013 Some of the water repellents are used by spraying the windshields when you are in RAIN. RainBOE is one . If you spray the screen and cannot use the wipers while precipitation is occurring the windshield may end up with poor visibility such that you can't operate visually until you fly through rain. There are many brands, but most sell tens of thousands. This means that windscreen replacement firms have a quite large market, and can be sure of many sales. Compare that to aircraft manufacturers. Which one sells thousands of aeroplanes each year? Hundreds? Few of them even sell dozens, so the market is just not there. Can you name an aircraft with a glass windscreen?
