Out of Montpelier at 07.15, touchdown at Stark Airfield ten minutes later. Watched our CorvairK do circuits in School Gazelle...impressed with his style because the air was unusually rough this morning.

Out of Starke at 8.15 landed nearby Donnington at 08.30. Ten minute delay due arriving traffic. Enjoyed homemade scones with strawberry jam and cream, and chocolate birthday cake to celebrate Ray Smiths 84th Birthday....entertained by Wittman Tailwind flyby, took photos of visiting planes. Saw worlds only V-16 powered KR-2.

Out of Donnington at 09.45 for the run over to Ayr, landed Ayr 10.15 for Ayr sausage sizzle put on by the Ayr flying club. Enjoyed much good company, looked at aeroplanes, took photos.

Departed Ayr at 12.50 for a rough run back at Montpelier, landed 1.20 in high winds, happy with landing.

Home for coffee around 2 PM.....Photos below...............Maj....024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

Well there were 8 exhaust stacks on either side !..........yes a magic day even though the air was very hazy, with viz less than desireable . It was my first official NQ board rep outing which went well, and what topped it all off for me was that I was sitting at home around 2PM having a nice coffee !....just great when things go to plan !........Next weekend on again with a fly-in BBQ at Bowen which I'll also attend, weather permitting, thanks for your kind comments............Maj.....014_spot_on.gif.1f3bdf64e5eb969e67a583c9d350cd1f.gif

That Biplane looks interesting...what is it ?

Biplane is a Bellanca Eagle. Bellanca made about six I believe. Don Blanche bought the remaining ones and operates them at Ingham and Ayr. I have watched one spray from above and the have a swath (spray lingo for width of coverage on crop) about the same as the much more expensive Turbine powered Airtractor. Lycoming 540 powered.

At Bowen airport Hongie, wx may be a factor though. I 'm hoping to fly to Heathrow Saturday for overnight, then back up to Bowen Sunday morning.................Maj.....

Now I am envious. I used to fly Bowen, Ayr, Townsville, Mackay when I started flying from Collinsville, but what makes me envious is that I can't fly now. Got a broken leg and hence 2 unflyable planes. hopefully 6 weeks to go.

See you at old Station I hope.

Hope you didn't break it practicing your log ripping with the chainsaw.

Today's flight.......spent the morning finishing up installing new nylon bushes in the Savannah main gear legs, plus tidying up some panel electrical. Then kicked her in the guts for a bit of a compass swing on the runway, plus all the turning helped settle in the new nose gear bungee, and made sure the gear was all fine. It seems to turn better now, and seems to sit a bit higher that it did.

Then took off for a 20 minute flight to Ingham airport, as I had to pop some rivits on the new oil door. This 680 hr 912 really pulls with its three-blade Kool prop, and most of the flight was done at 4,800 Rpm Vs 5000 Rpms in my Lightwing for about the same cruise speed. Landed on the grass beside the runway at Ingham, and totally impressed how the Savvy slows right down with only one notch of flap out, plus heaps of control authority down low and slow.

After departing Ingham, up to 3000' to check compass accuracy against that indicated on Ozrunways...noted decrepencies on Ozrunways scratchpad...great feature.

Back at Abergowrie I circuled the owners house to let him know I had returned, then East to the field......Holy hell, what's all that smoke around the airstrip !!..........had noticed all the smoke previously, but it didn't click that the local cane farmers had decided to light up the paddock right adjacent to the stip I needed to land on !...Wind was also blowing the thick smoke across the runway. Hooked into a low downwind to have a look, and noted about one third of the runway still visible. Flaps out, power off and I landed quickly before things got any worse. As I was putting her in the hanger the cane farmer came over bearing cold XXXXs, and I told him how different that landing was ! Ten minutes later the wind changed a bit and blew the now considerable smoke away from the strip............which is when these photos were taken..then wouldn't 't you know it, the planes owner turns up to finish putting the aeroplane away for me ......gotta love cane farmers !........first photo is of one set of slightly U/S main gear leg bushes, that just gave up the will to go on.....................Maj....014_spot_on.gif.1f3bdf64e5eb969e67a583c9d350cd1f.gif
