Also Clear Prop has just about every nut, bolt fastener and clamp...aviation grade...here in stock...and many different gauges of WIRE and transponder kits...just ask for anything you need.

In fact, doing so helps this site that you get for free than to just recommend going elsewhere

I have seen this hose used for Rotax 912 oil lines.  Owners said no issues and replaced with same again.   An experienced Rotax and aircraft service person used it.lpht.thumb.png.11e64db472684089692b516fcc1f225a.png

As advised earlier:

Repco Australia only stock those Gates products deemed to have automotive applications - they do not stock 8GHT hydraulic oil hose.

8GHT hydraulic oil hose, can be had from a hydraulic service company called Hydrolink (there may be others)

8GHT is not supplied by Repco. You will find it in a hydraulics service/parts supply😈

17mm Coolant hose.

As most of you will know I am a big fan of Gates hoses. Unfortunately I am unable to find a Gates general purpose 17mm ID coolant/heater hose. They seem to have a "hole" in their supply between 15.9 - 19mm. I know some of their specific, molded automotive offerings will have this ID, sometimes only at one end.

Just wondering if anyone has tried a Gates heater/coolant, 15.9 ID hose over a 17mm OD spigot/barb - a 1mm stretch may be asking too much, what say you???

Australia has Mackay Consolidated Industries, who make automotive hoses and , judging by their catalogue, may be able to supply 17mmID coolant hose.

Heater Hose Catalogue, https://derwentindustries.com.au/automotive/

Great range of molded shapes to choose from. Range from 100mm - 900mm in length. Should be able to purchase 1-2  shapes & cut to desired length .

I have never used their products - anyone on the Forum willing to vouch for them?

😈

I seem to recall BrendAn had a big roll of 17mm coolant hose which fitted his Isuzu trucks, and he was offering it to other forum users a while back (maybe 6 mths ago?). Not sure what brand it would be, though. Send him a message and see what he's got.

EDIT: Found his post, it was in March, he has 17.5mm Mackay hose.

I've used Mackay hoses for over 60 years, but I think they made better quality hoses in the early days (40-50 years ago). I prefer Gates at every opportunity, my personal opinion (backed by years of experience) is that Gates products are superior to most other brands - Dayco, Mackay, and Chinese products. Silicone hose is the most durable of all, of course.

I gave up on trying to find the oil hose alternative myself and just bought something from the mechanic. It's blue is all I know.

Thats a bit scary - doesn't sound like you have made any effort to assess quality.

The oil hose alternative, to RoTAX, was relatively easy - Gates 8GHT is not supplied by Repco. You will find it in a hydraulics service/parts supply😈

Thanks OneTrack,

"Found his post, it was in March, he has 17.5mm Mackay hose."

Now that you mention it, I do have some vague recollection. Two points;

  • I will never fit a slightly overlarge hose but will, if needs be, try a slightly small eg 16.5mm ID. Reason being,  a slightly small ID will seal against the spigot, fare better than a slightly large ID.
  • If aged memory serves there were questions about the age of this hose - may have been around the time that I found out "rubber" hose actually has a shelf life.

Rubber products do indeed degrade fairly rapidly, and it's important to know when the rubber item was manufactured.

Having said that, I've got Japanese vehicles with coolant hoses that are over 20 years old, and they show little sign of degradation, despite their extended use.

This is not to say I recommend you leave rubber hoses in place on your aircraft, for 20 years! The 5 year Rotax replacement recommendation is pretty reasonable.

Yes - I also have had experince of a Daihatsu Rocky 2.8 Turbo Diesel, that had hoses well over 30 years old before replacement.

At every 5000km service I would check the hoses, by squeezing/moving, for flexibility.

Never had a leak but like you I stick to to the Rotax 5 year hose replacement advice.

The old hoses often have a new life on mowers, etc.😈

Not scary at all. They are LAMEs and service a lot of Rotax engines. They have done the homework for me. Mind you, it didn't seem much cheaper than the 'real' deal. But there was no mucking around getting it either. They are at the same field as me.

Anyway, you always say 'relatively easy' but never say where you got yours from. Why not just give us a link to your supplier? Don't you like your supplier? Wouldn't you want to send some more business their way! It's not like we are downloading pirated software and we've got to be all 'hush hush' about it...

D_G,

"Anyway, you always say 'relatively easy' but never say where you got yours from"

When making a recommendation (ie I have personal experince of the product) I have always given the supplier - check back in this thread.

 Gates hoses

  • Classify fuel & coolant as automotive - their agents (in Au) for these products is Repco - dealerships nationwide
  • Oil hose is classified as hydraulic - I got mine from Hydraulink- dealerships nationwide. There may be other suppliers.

"Not scary at all. They are LAMEs and service a lot of Rotax engines"

Its nice that you trust these particular LAIM's - When it comes to Rotax, I have had very disquieting contacts, with  three completely separate LAIMs (hardly a strong sample). No way would I have them touch my engine. Seems to me that most LAIM's are LYCon focused and have great difficulty in even acknowledging the existence of Rotax, let alone having any skills/knowledge to apply.😈

What's a LAIM?   Nev

A derogatory term for a LAME I believe  😄

In some slang contexts, "laim" can be an offensive term, often used to describe something as dull, uninteresting, or awkward, according to Dictionary.com. This is often a shortened and potentially derogatory form of the word "lame".

I took Skippy's advice and went for Gates hose but I just searched automotive catalogues for the best shape.

Gates17mm.thumb.jpg.002e162a13fb040cb18baceebc83f56f.jpg

I bought a few different ones because none of mine are straight. Every hose just had to have something cut off for a perfect fit.

Hi Moneybox,

I hope the coolant hose you have selected has a 17mm or smaller ID??

If not you are relying on the hose clamp to both make a seal and for security - not good!

Ideally the hose should be a tight fit, on the 17mm OD  spigot, thus making a good seal against leaking. The clamp, done up firm (not over tight) is just for security.

Easy to Google both these Gates hoses to see they are 17mm ID.

Too bad for the thousands of pilots who don't service their own aircraft then that apparently there are almost no good mechanics around 🙄

Did you purchase other 17mmID Gates coolant hoses or just the 02-1562 & 02-1415?😈

Yes Skippy, I'm pretty sure I bought a couple of 90° hoses but I can't find the invoice.

25mmhose.thumb.jpg.dbd6e87327fade5a4089acd2af12f8a0.jpg

I bought four of these 25mm hoses as well. If Sandra finds the invoice I'll post the list but anything not marked for the plane has just gone into a file of assorted invoices never to be seen again.
