  1. The way I see it is that if given the right circumstances that kids a still interested but the hurdles of cost and effort need to have been addressed. The industry does need to change to accommodate this however. What I didn't mention earlier is that it's a vet course meaning up to 80k is a government loan so the student has to "only" come up with the remainder. This to me is a move from the industry to combat one of the previous issues. If the kids keep saying its to hard and the oldies keep saying that the kids aren't interested anymore I don't think we will get anywhere
  2. The course that I'm in at the moment I'm one of the old ones!(26) average age of 21ish and hundreds of people putting themselves through so I don't think it is an issue with the kids, more with how "smart" you get told you need to be to be a pilot and how much "work" is involved in doing it and how you need to be a millionaire because no one who is on a normal budget can possibly afford it.. It's is unfortunately normally told to people from pilots, and this rules it out before any real research can be done into becoming a pilot or any ambitions have set in. Kept me from doing it till now
  3. Sorry for the late reply's guys, kinda missed it I was hoping to miss the instructor route Nev if i could and do charter, you wouldn't recommend this? Not sure if i would be the "right" type of personality for it (not all that patient and not a big fan of incompetency lol) and dont think ill have another 15k to send at the end. HH I understand what you mean now, luckily with my MECIR and RAA hrs ill come out around the 220hr mark so hope that will put me ahead of the pack Milz, although i wouldnt be the best person to comment I will make this. There are a hell of a lot of schools doing VETFEE now (At least 10 that i have been told of). This makes it allot more obtainable to do and i think we will see allot of newbies in about 12 months fighting it out, there will be 100+ just from my school alone so i think that you will need to be above average but i also don't think that this would be any different to any other time
  4. I'm going to put this one to HH and Nev and the other guys that have been in the industry. Do you really think another 50 hrs will make much of a difference in the long run?? I know that I wouldn't have got nearly the level of theory if I had gone the self study route and would bet my last cent that at most schools it would be lucky to be 70% as good ( not saying that the instructing itself would be any better or worse just the things that go along side, and I have the resources here to just about do anything ( countless sims, library with any book/cd/DVD you could think of, planing rooms with computers/ copiers ect and have been supplied with an iPad with or runways as well as all maps, whizz wheels and the rest) and a huge amount of knowledge to be tapped at any time. At the end of the day, 50 hrs is what I would fly in the first month if I took a job as an instructor here at the end. And I think that allot has to be said about the fact it isFULL time, you don't do anything but live and breathe aviation for over a year!! There must be something that I'm missing out on be interesting to hear your thoughts
  5. I was commenting mostly on post #42 #43. I agree that no stable flight would have been able that wasn't where i was going with it, my comment about the elevator wasn't saying that it was recoverable, just the opposite that nothing apart from bringing the W+B back into the envelope could recover. As for the drag, I had been told that there is a design feature built in so that if was in a fully stalled state that there was a rearward drag center that would create a pitch down effect. I had thought that this would explain how the AC landed quite level. I also think that there would have been a load shift
  6. I agree about the concept and was more talking about the rather longish nose and quite a low tail. As for the prop, i had never given a thought as to the weight! Cheers Nev
  7. Not something that pushing the nose down could avoid if the W+B is out beyond elevator authority. As for "righting" itself, are they not designed to have the dragline in a stalled condition rearward to aid with recovery? i had thought that once stalled it would have helped the nose to lower and slowly aid recovery
  8. Dont think the forward vis would be much and the Gyro effect would be rather large i would think. Apart from that i like!
  9. I think it depends on the student and how quickly they can adapt to a new instructor, im doing my CPL at the moment and have had a few instructors all with their strengths and weaknesses as well as their priority with what they find important and learning from all of them i find i get a broad cover of instruction..... In saying that, rather then convert my RA cert over i have taken a 150hr course starting from PPL and have had one instructor for AB, One for GFPT, one for NAV ect. I dont not recommend being thrown around during you training ie different instructor every flight and think that it would be a major setback. And like i said it depends on the student, if it takes them 3 flights to get used to another instructor then wouldn't be any advantage. PS just my 2 cents lot more knowledgeable people on here then myself!!
  10. This is massively important with the CASA exams. Ive been told directly that they use it as an English comprehension exam aswell
  11. I think if you ever wanted to go back it would be allot easier to finish but as for going to RA i wouldn't think it made a difference as you still have over the min hours so when happy they would issue your cert. May be wrong tho
  12. The pilot is inbound CTAF Broadcast 10 nm from the aerodrome, or earlier, commensurate with aeroplane performance and pilot workload, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for the aerodrome That was on page 235, I only just read it now.
  13. Dont have my Docs with me at the moment but it is in the ATC section of the jepps under CTAF procedures and also under communicati0n section it has the preferred general broadcast to be used and states again there, is in the CAR's as well i would reckon but cant think where off the top of my head
  14. Inbound broadcast is Required at CTAF aerodromes
  15. G'Day Phil, Never mentioned driving buses and i couldn't agree more. Im going to try to keep to "real" flying as much as i can, I would like to do RFDS or one of the regional out of cairns in the long run. still got a while to work out where i want to go
  16. I'm paying 100k for ppl to atpl hold with mecir, but there is a 20% fee for using the vet fee on top of it so it isn't the cheapest way of doing it by any means but, it's the only way I would have been able to do it and I'm more then impressed with the level of training provided and know if I was self studying for the theory I wouldn't have learnt half as much even if I had learnt enough to pass the test. But it wouldn't be for everyone and if I had the cash spare I would have payed upfront for it and saved 20k!
  17. Try flighttrainingadelaide.com.au and check out their vet fee course. I'm doing it and its the best if both worlds in my opinion.
  18. Nope, you can pile it all in together as long as you still meet the required solo hours
  19. I agree here 100% been on the other side of a close call with that one I did mention VMC as that is what i had thought Sain had been talking about IFR in VMC? May have misread it..
  20. They wont be IFR in VMC if they are doing i straight in approach.... Or shouldn't anyways
  21. Thanks heaps for the replies guys! That has just about covered it
