  1. Just want to sigh with relief as my first inclination was, "Oh no, hope it's not a Jab". Did not feel up to another saga of Jab bashing.
  2. I understand that restoring the equilibrium of the Max 8 required the trim to be reset using electric trim before disabling the circuits. The reason for this is that electric trim operates at least 10x faster than trying to trim manually. This can be seen in the cockpit video of electric trim in operation vis the speed that the manual trim wheels revolve. When electric trim is selected I believe that MCAS is operational so electric trim is overridden. Never the less, the MCAS system requires an intimate knowledge of its full implications. Boeing (or failing this, an over-arching regulatory body)should have grounded the aircraft prior to the 2nd disaster. The primary problem was that the manufacturer, short circuited normal conservative airworthiness standards for commercial reasons, ie; Introducing a very different aircraft posing as the previous marks. Re-training was not only not offered but was considered unnecessary.
  3. "Actually I think that they are and they train for it a lot." Thruster 88 I don't think that they were given the tools to train for this contingency and I think THAT is the nub of the matter. To insinuate such a poorly thought out and undeveloped "solution" to a major instability issue is, to say the least, reckless.
  4. An 8000hr captain flying for an airline which is well regarded and has passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) benchmark for global safety management happened to have the worst luck; that is to be flying an unsafe derivative of an early '60's plane which had control issues which were not published by the manufacturer on spurious economic grounds. Whichever way you like to slice and dice it, this is a catastrophe greater than the de Haviland Comet disaster and haven't we learned anything yet about "deregulation" or as some choose to see it "elimination of red tape"? If I had a vote I would vote for industrial manslaughter and see that executives in Boeing served good time in the pen for this. Airline pilots are not expected to make complex decisions involving multiple factors when disaster is screaming at them as the ground is 2 or 3 seconds away.
  5. Better be careful making blanket statements about "3rd world airlines". Engage brain BEFORE mouth.
  6. I heard a rumor last week that they may be considering adding an administrative charge to CFI's lodging BFR results. Has anyone any knowledge of this?
  7. " Frigate Bird "- P G Taylor and " Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journey" - Mike Collins ( From memory - hope I'm not too far out in the titles.)
  8. Incredibly sad to once again see a person injured and a good plane destroyed. These are very safe aircraft if operated conservatively.
  9. G'day O.K. I managed to join without a great deal of effort and usually IT rejects my efforts out of hand. I am going to replace the Jab Kubota style reg/rectifier with a Powermate. Have found them to be without issues on my Thruster and the Kitfox. A friend has one on each of his 2 Jabs. Are you restricted in the number of characters you can send or just a bit economical. I understand that you don't want to rabbit on.
  10. I think that it is quite easy for the minister , with x number of public servants, to address every press article with a statement. Not so easy for an opposition spokesman in the lead up to a federal election. To *fly tornado* I can only say that patience is required when dealing with politics.
  11. Story now coming out showing that Trump's attempt to make partial concession to N Korea were undermined by the 2 lunatics Bolton & Pompeo. It figures that a deal maker is frustrated by agents of the MIC. what hope is there?
  12. Report just now from ABC that 2 US captains had unexplained nose down pitch immediately after engagement of a/p. Disengagement of auto pilot allowed normal climb to continue. Problem seems greater than Lion Air crash.
  13. Already noted that it was on fire before impact. Points to more than runaway trim
  14. China has grounded their fleet replaced with older 800 series a/c. Captain was very experienced with 8000hrs. Unlikely that he was not aware of the Lion Air reports. A/c reported to be on fire as it descends. Catastrophe for Boeing.
  15. This is a disaster for Boeing. It raises serious issues about the re-engining of the 737. It may require more than merely re-writing the pilot's manual.
  16. Might be able to help but won't be back in oz for 2 weeks. See how u go. Don
  17. I met her out at Temora once. What a snob! Would not even talk to us common aviators.
  18. General circuit direction is to the r/h to avoid overflying noise sensitive dwellings. Nev, I didn't take offense. I am in total agreement with Poteroo re: aviation and road behavior. Don
  19. This accident illustrates the variability of factors which can conspire to bring an aviator unstuck. Hindsight is often 20/20 and gives observers a comfortable leg-up. The purpose of this section of the forum(I believe), is to give us the opportunity of putting forward our observations for the consideration of more fortunate pilots. That is we can respectfully offer our opinions for others to debate. No disrespect meant by me. Don
  20. The Piper failed to negotiate the ridge by a matter of a few ft. There was no ground impact prior to the wing striking a tree which resulted in a 180 impacting the other wing. The tail cone was almost detached and the prop tips were sheared by impact. I think the engine was delivering full power and the plane struck with a high nose attitude. The passenger's side was deformed inward. The pilot should be buying a bucket full of lottery tickets.
  21. Yeah, I have been flying Thrusters for that long and I love it too. We picked up a Jab powered Vision last year but the wheels are small and the landing gear stiff so not so much of a rough field performer. Will cruise at 65kts tho if you want to go somewhere which I seldom do.
  22. G'day Justin, Is that a Hornet? Nice looking ride whatever. I had a Volksplane VP-2 for 11 yrs. I ended up with a 2l Aeropower which I EFI'ed with original VW Bosch Jetronic hardware scavenged from a 1600 TS and a Haltech ECU. It never let me down over 550hrs. It would climb out at 3600rpm and then cruise at 3100. Don
