  1. Also sealed around oil cooler, CAMit gull wings on the bottom of jugs, extraction skirt. I tried enclosing the rear of 3 and 4 but this increased the temp on those by 15 deg. Ian Bent suggested that the heated air pooled at the rear of the system coz it doesn't like tight 90deg bends down the back of the fins as it slows the airflow. Returned them to the standard outflow at the rear and temps were lowered. Ken
  2. My Colt will need either a Svenn system wing extension that is a bit exxy ,but looks good compared to some others, or a Micro VG kit that will bring it to 43/44 kts. Both have STCs but it seems a little silly to have a Super Cub 'in' but my wee Colt 'out'. Looks like VGs @ $1k are the go if I have to. Ken
  3. Blinky, Who is and why? best to name names if you feel that is the case. Ken
  4. Removed due to duplication
  5. I guess that I am one of these pilots that you both dislike. My Colt is more "recreational" than my Jab. Blanket statements lead to trip ups..... Colt, 2 pob, 90kts, 5.6 hrs duration, better G at +4.4, plus more than a toothbrush. Jab, 2pob, 100kts, 7.45 hrs duration, +4G, cut toothbrush in half to save weight. Ken
  6. Bruce, I look at your CHT numbers and know you run digital but in reality if you look at the jab issued vdo temp gauge they are barely the thickness of the difference of the needle. I look at my Colt CHT and is says 1-2-3 so i guess when it goes furter to the right on the dial that would be called very hot as it has hit the needle stop pin. I tend to be happy if the needle isnt bending on the pin and that the slip ball is still in the glass, and hasnt blown out the end. Remember all the traffic on the EGT a couple of years ago, and i am reminded in the "old days" you leaned the mixture until it was in the green, and this was on only one cylinder and had no numbers. I wonder if all we get is a headache :) Ken
  7. My O-235 doesn't have an oil cooler....or an oil filter, as we are used to anyway, if you don't count a screen. Fred Flintstone but works. Ken
  8. Just to show how little we count.......I am at Gawler, with Bruce, and if you look at the chart, we are in military airspace. We run a 7 day a week operation with a tight circuit area with a pie shaped training area that alternates between 2500 and 4500, depending if the RAAF decide to launch a plane for a jolly. If you look at the chart our circuit is squated off due to their ILS. I can say right now that our club has more movements in a single day than the RAAF would complete in a month. But they own all the airspace. To their credit they allow gliders to more height but not me anymore as I fly a Jab. I guess it is ok as I get a nose bleed if I have over 500 feet beneath me as required by the cta. Ken
  9. ave8rr, M&M said that they were going for an increase in stall speed all along, and that MAY bring in the need to do a conversion of some sort to satisfy casa. Looks like they have been blindsided. They are following this up. I have made sure I filled out the casa discussion/survey and explained that at least my Colt needs the increase to be included. If ever there was an aircraft that should be classed as "recreational" it is the Colt. to all that have a J200 you had best fill out the survey as you wont get to 700kg if it goes thru without the stall increase Ken
  10. Alan, My Colt is VH reg and I am recovering etc it at the moment with a view to reg as RAAus as I dont want to work under two systems. Ken
  11. Sent an email to RAAus about the stall speed as my wee Colt is 50 kts. They got back to me pronto and said it caught them by surprise as well. They are following it up as it is not what was meant to happen, confirming the conversations with M&M at the Gawler seminar a couple of months ago, saying all was progressing well. Ken
  12. Ring RAAus and aviod all the conjecture. That is what they are there for.
  13. Turbo, the CFIs that i have dealt with and spoken to are either the owner of a small flight training school with only themselves as the sole employee or have a couple of part timers on contract. Other CFIs are the top instructor and volunteer at a club and have limited input into the business side as they are busy training. With 10k members and 10 (?) paid staff i would like to see degrees in management, corporate governance, economics, etc running the show. One CFI is plently to advise on that part of RAAus (students and training)
  14. I've been a member since the AUF days and I think that we have always chosen CFI's as it was the easy thing to do coz they know flying right? But as we are no longer "clubby" with now 10k members, not just 50 of our mates, I really feel that the board has had enough CFIs for now and we need to look at business, corporate and large community organisation type of candidates. It seems that i have seen some of these faces 20 years ago. Am I wrong? No way am i going to keep rehashing the same people with limited corporate knowledge any more. We have outgrown the "mates club" . It was this type of thinking that got us into trouble a few years ago if you remember. Further, I have taken the time to talk to some of the board and staff a few times over the last 3 years at meetings, flyins and workshops and been impressed with the direction we are heading, and none of the were of the old guard. Ken
  15. Back to the origonal owner?
  16. Sounds like most have it easy! At my club we have gliders and pawnee tow plane doing their own thing. Can be interesting at times.
  17. I may know the aircraft , what is the rego
  18. Purchased a Colt in need of a rebuild so I am hanging out for the 760kg. I hope it comes through before I make it airworthy or I will have to go RPL and that will put me under 2 systems. Working on my Jab will be OK but not on my simpler Colt. Hmmm,m Ken
  19. Initially I was sceptical of the L1 theory session but learnt a few things,it just wasnt compatible with iPad, (that pissed me off) So all up ---I have built my own jab, maintained it for 13 years, now done the L1 theory and L1 practice, the Jab factory course and help out our level 4 from time to time to keep my skills up. I have got something from every course and session I have attended. It has all been worth it. Now I am about to restore a Colt for the 760kg limit but looks like I won't be able to maintain it........Back to square on again as it will have to be Lame maintained. I do worry about Casa though as I filled out a transfer form of 6 pages that needed an 8 page explanation document to complete the 6 page rego form, go figure!!!! Hopefully I will eventually be able to maintain it as it is as simple as my Jabby. Ken
  20. Like the rest of you I have the 98 Mogas smell and when I first noticed it I stripped and replaced my lines and tap, examined the tank and all was good as far as I could tell and still smelled for a couple of minutes after the door was opened. Spoke to others and all had the smell. So I filled all my plastics jerry cans with 98 and left them in my car over the day. Got to tell you the pong was overwhelming but had no leaks. So I just put up with it over these years and nothing has happened to cause me to change back to avgas Ken.
  21. One thing of note with this engine is that power is rated as 100 hp at 2900rpm. This would be handy as most VW based engines max power is 3200 to 3600. So a larger prop can be used maximising the lower rpm range AND the higher power output over the normal 76 to 80hp. Ken
  22. Working from memory (risky) this company already cast the VW Brazillian engines, so took it over when VW wanted to sell. They then hired a Continental engines design engineer and this motor is the result. Ken
  23. I have about 350 hrs on 98 in my 2200. All good. I keep the tank half full and top up each time I fly with the amount I will need for the flight. Ken
  24. I get sea sick looking at a wet sponge! Used to be a glider jockey and tried aeros but felt sick the entire time so gave it up and flew power instead. It is all about straight and level for me I'm afraid to say. Ken
  25. Sophie, Roland Flat is 600m grass and a private strip, ( I would not recommend it in your aircraft ) you are still 5 minutes drive from Tanunda ( where I live) so will still need a taxi. Best bet is Gawler, then taxi from there as the Barossa is a large area. I don't know of any hire cars in Gawler. Tanunda is the centre of the region and there is a husband and wife taxi car business, they also have a plane of their own so can talk the lingo. As an alternative I think there is a local bus service, best check with the Information Centre about that. Ken
