Thats an interesting review...i dont agree with the cost to a flying student its $16,000 more which on face value is $3-4hr more However it is also more fuel efficient... not knowing the sums lets assume its 115/100 knots more efficient So its only around $3hr more in a flight school situation, yet you suddenly get an aircraft that is also a high speed tourer for trips away or navs / extended navs To me its a no brainer if you want new then the A32 wins every time unless you cant afford it or need to land off field or on rough farm strips. If you want used then clearly your only choice is the A22

No but i turn my plane in a direction that i can check the entire active side... with particular focus on mid downwind onwards and if i had to backtrack, i would visually check the entire downwind carefully... I have a PCAS and the amount of times a visiting aircraft is in or near the circuit with no radio is astounding...so visual check is critical...I presume they are broadcasting accidently still on a wrong frequency (which i have done twice)...sometimes im monitoring 118.1 and accidently broadcasting 118.9 ..Im hearing all the calls making all the calls and there is no one on 118.9 to tell me what a goose i am... can easily happen when you come through several close CTAF's Its probably not as likely for you more remote people, but then you would possibly have more pilots without radios or on the wrong frequency all together. eg Unicom v CTAF

These pilots still have eyes and they should be checking the runway while on downwind... And on base....they had plenty of time to see .. Do we rely only on radio...hell no One word of advice for all..a white aircraft sitting on the centerline or the keys is much harder to spot than an aircraft 1 m off the centerline or not on the keys.... Keep that in The back of your mind if you prefer not to have a twin land on your roof...cause you probably wont get to tell us about it after the fact. I tend to agree with aro...however, engine wear and partial depreciation due to engine and airframe hours would imho be warranted.... a 200 hour aircraft is worth a lot more than a 1200 thus engine and airframe is part of the hourly cost... Fuel 20lph at $2.20 = $44ph Oil 50hours at $40 = $1 hr Engine wear including labour freight etc to replace engine = $28,000 / 2000 hours = $14 hr Gearbox service every 600 hours = $1.50 per hour Other wear and tear at on parts and components = 200 hours per year $1000 cost per year = $5 hr L2 inspection costs per 100 hrs = $200 = $2 hr Airframe wear 4000 hours TT till $20,ooo value = $80000 / 4000hrs = $20hr Total $44+1+14+1.5+5+2+20hr = $87.5 hr That has to be split in two so i would be assuming i have missed some items and fairly charging $50 per hour on cost recovery and assuming that is reasonable Note: i wouldn't do this for uber etc... but if a non family member wanted to go 2 up to say natfly then i think this is reasonable. In the past, i have heard old timers say if you go two up and get the pax to pay fuel, it works out about right. those old blokes are pretty close assuming fuel cost remain similar.. You where in the right ! There may be reasons he didnt hear you, eg vegetation, positions of aerials etc etc... but at the end of the day, he was on downwind and you are perfectly entitled to enter and backtrack . He should have done a visual and noticed you lined up on the taxi way and been expecting you, then should have seen you when checking on base and final... I have no time for these morons that do tight circuits (which it must have been) and expect every aircraft to know the guy is going to cut it real tight... If as i suspect he saw you there and thought he might race you in, he should have been polite and asked you to hold, said he was on a tight circuit and would expedite quickly.... If however you entered later than your saying and dawdled down the runway, knowing he was doing a standard circuit ...then this can in my opinion be a little awkward...as it implies you should hurry (dangerous) or he should extend (rude ?)

Ian the other thing is you can get this coded for a fraction of the price by indians on upwork and you have none of the overheads or labour relations issues of aussies... You will hire an indian with 100 times the ability of an aussie coder for about 1/4 the price and none of the ego or labour market issues. I hate recommending any foreigner over an aussie...but i would never hire an aussie for this type of job.

Agree ...what is your time worth...the time you have wasted Oscar is amazing...but in all honesty if you went and pulled beers for $20 per hour you could have purchased a rotax and flown the thing the entire way around australia , fuel and maintenance costs included ....

uh oh looks like uber wanna be's are taking to the skies.... not officially under uber as we know it..but there are uber like services now starting up asking pilots to use apps, services and bid for flying people from point A to B...... this looks like it will open a pandora's box in aviation.... I guess its just a way of efficiently tendering for charter work if it was all legal....but you can bet your bottom there will be some illegal tendering with aircraft and pilots not properly endorsed, licensed, registered or maintained for such activities...
