  1. quite right there KG, but when the recommendation is worded thus.. "7.2 Screen Size 7.2.1 The screen size and resolution will need to demonstrate the ability to display information in a manner comparable to the paper aeronautical charts and data it is intended to replace. The recommended minimum size of the screen is 200mm measured diagonally across the active viewing area. If the intent of the installation is to display charts and maps, the device should be suitably sized to display the image without excessive scrolling. Note: Some manufacturer’s screen sizes may vary marginally from this minimum but still may be acceptable" I will take the recommendation as a requirement just to be sure..
  2. be good if Ozrunways is available on android... I had it on ipad but work related requirements dictated that I had to look at Samsung or similar.. Also be aware that if you are going to use a EFB, CASA has a screen size requirement..
  3. Don't get me wrong Turbs, I'm personally not 100% convinced that the inconvenience being spread about is worth the commercial gain of a family. But in stating that, the Wagner family have been quite astute since being on the bones of their backsides in the 1980's. they would have done their homework before risking the hundreds of millions of their own money in building their airport. This is a long term investment by them and with the growth along the eastern seaboard corridor, Blind Freddy would be able to see an advantage of developing a distribution hub in the Toowoomba region (with a airfreight terminal) This development won't have too much affect on Toowoomba municipal aerodrome either way. It has and will affect Oakey airspace more so though..
  4. bit harsh Deb, Aliens could've beamed him up just before his aircraft spiralled into the sea.. seriously though Joe, night flying can be daunting particularly on really dark nights without too many visual cues other than a starry night sky. not many 182L Cessnas had auto-pilots so would have been easy for a low time pilot to get himself into trouble if he got disoriented with stars being reflected onto the sea surface as was discussed may have been the cause at the time of his disappearance.
  5. Avalon and Wellcamp have absolutely nothing in common. demographics are completely different because the Darling Downs area is growth positive whilst Geelong is unfortunately in a downward spiral with a lot of local manufacturing icons and heavy jet maintenance facilities closing..
  6. I reckon it was maternal instincts taking over and she wanted to sit and hatch that egg
  7. Getting back on thread, Wellcamp (Brisbane west) is being constructed because of continuing growth around the area and predominately for freight hub support and that's where the Wagner dynasty can see opportunity and ROI.. if they get walk on freight as well that will be a nice bonus and the Qantas link to Sydney is a good PR exercise to help quell the doubters of the project. Airspace promulgation has not been completed and I'm not sure at what stage any investigation by air-services is at with that. Wellcamp will be initially run towerless and uncontrolled. Military airspace had to be shrunken to accommodate arrival and departures out of Wellcamp without impacting workload on Oakey controllers, which has resulted in the RAAF making it harder for VFR transits through Oakey Army Airspace. YTWB will remain as it always has been, predominately a non RPT aerodrome which has some protection under the Commonwealth Aerodromes Act (even though its run by TRC)..
  8. There have been quite a few fines (between $500 and $5,000 depending where) around the place where an aerodrome is on the security list and people have not had an ASIC/AVID. ( I know of a couple personally but won't elaborate here, except to say they had ASICs but weren't displaying them correctly = $500.00 each ) Personally, I think ASICs are a waste of time, but until they're made redundant, I'll spend 15min refilling out the forms, then getting my photo taken and printed (I usually catch up with a couple of mates down town while I'm waiting) then down the courthouse and get the doc's certified yet again then posted off... remembering that I also filled out and sent same over the internet prior.. whole episode for me takes about 40mins and that includes driving up town and back and of course the couple of hundred dollars..
  9. The 182RG, 210 and 206 can all bite with forward C of G when you let them get too slow, they will drop the nose and catch the inexperienced.. the little mishap that is subject to this thread is the failure of the pilot to correctly handle the aircraft and let the aircraft take him/her to the scene of an accident.. and agree 100% with Poteroo's comment above..
  10. It comes as no surprise that this thread (just like the Cessna) has drifted off the centreline...
  11. Risky, I did not accuse Pathfinder of unsafe practices but a PERCEPTION.. read my post in its entirety and don't take things out of context.. At no time did I claim anything, I was asking if there was something about the operation that needed closer scrutiny. IT would be a big disappointment if Pathfinder themselves weren't self auditing to find ways to mitigate the risk so far presenting itself. I have absolutely no affiliation with any flying school east or west of the great divide, so I don't have to prove anything.. but with my many thousands of hours of flying experience, I can see where there could've be an issue, even if it was using MOGAS on the day . I am voicing my concern and have every right to do that!!
  12. Pretty simple really when you think about it, If your buying mogas, there is the possibility of contamination at the bowser with ethanol which infuses with water very well and with icing conditions prevalent on the day could have been as simple as that to stop the donk if it wasn't empty tanks as was quoted to me from people at Archerfield and I'm not saying they are 100% right neither, Engine ran fine after it was recovered so what needs to be determined is why the pistons weren't getting the fuel/air mixture to support combustion..
  13. What is more of an issue here which hasn't been mentioned is the perception of unsafe practices that people will have of the RAA operation at Archerfield. Yes this has been the second crash with this aircraft but they have also had another making three incidents. The pilot used his training, skill and a huge amount of good luck to manoeuvre the aircraft to a successful landing (any landing you can walk away from is supposed to be OK, right?) but really, is their operating regime flawed? For instance, using mogas in an aircraft where weather conditions could increase the risk of carby icing or was it a case of having too much air in the tanks? Comments locally at Archerfield seem to support the later, so was proper flight planning carried out to ensure enough fuel carried for flight and reserves?
  14. good to hear Michael, I hope the market opens up for the Boomer. but sadly I think my comment two years ago may still bear the test of time. I hope I'm wrong for whoever would have invested in getting it back into production. PS.. Oscar it was Kingaroy not Dalby
  15. I knew Barry fairly well and flew with him on a number of occasions where he right hand seated with me on getting me proficient in a particular aircraft type. Although he had a few character flaws that lessor persons would have found themselves behind bars, I found him very professional as a pilot and quite likable and a kindred spirit around an aeroplane. I was also at Archerfield the day he lost the argument with the Hangar door and was kept informed of his ensuing battle to regain his medical to fly. I know both doctors that are now being harassed by the lawsuit and know first hand that neither would cut corners to allow anyone to fly if presented with a situation which would call for restrictions or grounding of the pilot. They did however clear Barry to be able to exercise the privileges of a private pilot, something that he was NOT doing at the time of the accident. I feel for the loss that both families are enduring, but really the blame must fall at the feet of both the CFI/CP of Hemple's Aviation at the time and CASA as they had a good measure of information of what Barry was doing and did nothing to stop it.
  16. I'm devastated, Terry would fly one of his replicas to the opening of an envelope. Supported me with our Dalby Wings &Wheels. Another sad day for us all... He will be missed!!
  17. Although I couldn't make it myself, some friends of mine attended the memorial service today and when I saw them on the news.. Of them and also to the loved ones left behind to grieve...quite sobering.. Every action has a consequence and this one was tragic in every sense of the word... I don't want to see another thread of hypotheticals of what you do when you enter cloud and all that nonsense... if you don't have an IFR rating you have no business being there.. prescribed distances from cloud are there for a reason and these fundamental rules have been written so many times now in blood.. A momentary lapse of correct action can be costly in the extreme with the ultimate price paid..
  18. I'm one of those people who attended that meeting out at the Dalby aerodrome when the hair gelled "Mirror" made that statement. A number of us tried to make some suggestions as to how to raise funds to improve the aerodrome and make it a more cost effective "Asset". The council just doesn't get it and treats all the aerodromes in the region with distain and look at them as toxic liabilities.. I personally am in the process of implimenting a campaign to have landing charges dropped on aircraft with a MTOW of less than 2000kg because of the benefits that these aircraft bring into our towns. I realise that I'm probably pushing the preverbial uphill, but I will give it a go... you never know!!
  19. Miles aerodrome is currently closed Dazza so they can do the upgrade, lengthen/widen and also increase the pavement rating to handle the larger aircraft that QANTAS will be using in their contractual arrangements that they now have in place with APLNG. Although APLNG are financing the upgrade, WDRC will be responsible for maintenance and terminal facilities. In their wisdom, they have not given any prior notice or consulted with any other stakeholder at any other aerodrome in the councils region that aren't really going to benefit or are used for FIFO. Apart from Chinchilla aerodrome which gets the Dornier, the FIFO flights are very minimal at the other aerodromes. None of us are happy and will be pursueing councillors accordingly. we have however been informed that AVDATA has been installed and has been running for the last few months prior to charges being instigated. be interested to see if RAA aircraft get to be charged. If you do plan to fly into the region, remember there is no legal requirement to use radio as none of the aerodromes are licensed or CTAF® yet, so despite the good airmanship in doing so as already mentioned some people will more than likely make no broadcasts or at best make a call without aircraft call sign, so keep a good lookout if you do come in afterall. I really feel for the businesses on field, because they will loose income and more than likely close their facilities because of the councils shortsightedness and greed.
  20. There is a little airstrip near upper kandanga which is pretty close to his track and under the present search pattern,, let us all hope that we will find them safe and well there..
  21. when I was learning to fly Tomo, if I taxied over any of the centreline taxi lights and hit one with the nosewheel, it cost a stubby.. in the very unlikely event anyone took out a runway light.... well that was a carton:buddies:.. Anyway, spending last weekend in Alice Springs looking at an aeroplane and spending 3 days at Lasseters, I wasn't game to stretch the friendship with the misses and head off to Monto.. saw a nice looking Zephyr stage through Dalby today off towards Inverell. I got to spend some time in a mates 210 today though.
  22. Don't know their methodology... probably purchased the rego list from RAA and bill direct using cctv cameras at the aerodromes.. they already know some pilots don't have or don't use the radio so avdata won't get rego.. I guess we will no doubt find out sooner or later.
  23. As from the 1st October, the Western Downs Regional Council will be introducing probably the most expensive landing/parking charges in regional aerodomes in Oz.. Aerodromes affected will include, Dalby, Tara, Chinchilla, Taroom, Wandoan and Miles (Condabri) The landing and parking charges will include RAA registered aircraft... Rates are listed in fees and charges on their website..
  24. Sorry JJ, not a Bundy local, I just get over there now and again. Haven't really taken that much notice lately on how much further development has been done at the airpark, although there has been some, perhaps a local can enlighten us how its going.. I know the local council is fairly pro-aviation and keen to see it being successful, they have actually just released another 17 Hangar leases..
