  1. I thought we all used GMT when flying
  2. Mate, I'll stop now as a CPL I fail there as well.
  3. Good, all's perfect, I'm sorry I raised the matter.
  4. I never said that. Merely pointed out the aims as listed for the site. Just I don't come to this site to read rubbish having no revevance to aviation. I have never been accused of being politically correct. Hey, if the non aviation guff is supported, so be it, I can adjust my involvement without affecting anyone else - I just pointed to the aims, maybe that has changed - ask Ian, purely an observation on my behalf - some people agree some don't, Really it depends where you want the site to end up.
  5. You only need a couple who insist on 1. Overflying joining DW 2. Joining DW 3. Joining Base AND 4. Turning final 5. Clear of RW regardless of other traffic and the rest may as turn their radios off. If you are subject to a running commentary from a couple then the other 4 or 5 in close are effectively non radio. Try and explain the requirements as listed CAAP 166, from memory, or the AIP and you get the same "I always" or "I was taught" or "more the better" type answer - Stop trying and walk away, you will never change their minds.
  6. The objectives of the site are not my input, just pointing what is written - take them as you like.
  7. I wonder if anyone (or at least many) considers relevance of many subjects being debated here. It looks like a Facebook type discussion on anything a lot of the time, at least to me, my interest in this site being aviation related topics?????? The Recreational Flying site provides resources and supports an on-line community for everyone having an interest in recreational flight, whether they just continue to dream or turn their dream into reality. Accordingly, to benefit both pilots and aviation enthusiasts the objectives of this site are to:- Improve safety and safety-awareness by enabling the sharing of ideas and experiences in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere. Improve maintenance skills and practices by providing information as well as forums in which questions can be answered and experience shared. Improve pilot skills by supporting an informal continuous learning environment, in which discussion and knowledge sharing can flourish. Provide help and advice for people seeking knowledge about, or participating in recreational aviation. Provide an on-line community in which aviation enthusiasts can communicate, discuss and enjoy sharing their passion with others.
  8. And Rotax (at least the one I saw pulled apart anyway)
  9. Had the metal band of my watch short across the solenoid - only turned one blade but could have had a different result.
  10. From me too. I haven't run into Pat since the 747 arrived at Longreach.
  11. You have to renew your registration every two years and receive a new sticker. The battery life is another thing and up to you.
  12. If you are using right rudder to start a left turn.......I'll pass thank you. I've been riding m/cycles and bicycles since primary school and didn't know I couldn't ride. (Probably don't know how to fly either but been getting away with that for 36years also)
  13. I use a battery back up. People have posted elsewhere here that the charging circuit on Rotax & Jabiru can leave voltage spikes dangerous to iPad batteries - I personally don't know about this but avoid it anyway.
  14. I have had RF noise on my radios recently when plugging a battery back to the iPad (not even connected to ships supply). Although I am yet to confirm my thoughts on this matter, it appears that the charging circuit is creating the noise when the iPad battery is low i.e. at a greater charge current, as it is not there when plugged in whilst the battery capacity is high. As I say I am yet to repeat this situation to confirm it, so I am only saying what "appears" to be happening.
  15. Yen, the thread is about EFBs. I realise most untralights don't have an ADF but the EFB with OzRunways and I assume the others that are available, do have this simulated information (or even a DG).
  16. Or you could just look at the tail of the ADF needle
  17. My thoughts: A radial should only used with a VOR [the VOR is often located some distance from the airport ref point, i.e. the GPS position, so you may not be on the "radial" quoted. It would be accurate to say bearing 120 deg M. A basic understanding of radials V headings is also required, which I suspect would only confuse quite a few, so my opinion for what it is worth, is radials/IFR reporting points etc. would only confuse the issue unless it became a component of the licence/certificate test. At this time non TSOed GPS positions cannot be legally used, at least in my understanding anyway.
  18. Out of interest, what does it stop you doing? (Aeros, IFR, NGT VMC & multiple pax excepted)
  19. No arguement about "spot". One point about "once you crash/outland you disappear off the system" - not quite right, if you go to OzRunways Tx site, select my flights, and type in your OzRunways password, all your flights can be seen - up to your last position. Is reliant on Internet coverage though. The more secretive you are about our password the less effective it is for friend to keep an eye on you. Same as using codes/other names for your aircraft ID, actual rego works fine but it is an individual thing as some people want to keep their flights secretive - but you can't have it both ways - but the choise is available.
  20. OK I'll shut up
  21. I find it amazing that a simple question by deadstick which was answered in the first 2 replies can go off at a tangent with 61 posts and growing. Maybe it's just the nature of the Internet but still amazing.
  22. Ok, I'll have one more go in an attempt to explain what I was referring to with reduced visibility. Not 8/8ths blue. Still legal to fly VFR, clear of cloud etc and 5/8 km flight vis. Could be rain showers around etc. so the over all visibility is reduced but still legal to fly VFR. I hope that clears the intent, no hidden adgenda, just what occurs regularly.
  23. Read as minimum VFR limits.
  24. Compliance with hemispherical levels appears to be a problem with some. Basic level Nav training and certificates obtained before the 5000ft limit was lifted may well be a reason but not an excuse (throw in class E and transponder requirements, & correct area freq monitoring). An understanding of what IFR traffic is doing is imperative at these levels, at least IMO, especially when visibility is limited.
