  1. if GPS system (satellites etc) fails - loss of your current position will be the smallest problem in the world. At least any smart mobile/tablet can position you with precision of 2-3 miles just on mobile network, without gps reception at all, this is enough to find the way home. Erebus and other DR losses happened due to independent systems, where you have to rely on youself only.
  2. it does not work this way. If it is DR and other independent navigation - it must be done every time, with full precision and procedures, not only practiced when you have time and resources, like a funny toy. Or at the moment when everything collapsed you are in the same nowhere. So it is obvious unreal, it rises the cost (efforts, time spent, risks due to distraction from control, requirements for track planning etc) so high that the whole process becomes impossible. Its like to always carry full month survival kit with you, 50 kg backpack even if you are walking to grocery store. So all these emergency procedures must work without prehistory, ie they are obligatory absolute means dependable - GPS, radio beacons etc. You fear that your panel GPS fails? take 5 more GPSes with you - tablet, mobile phone, wrist watch, radio and fitness bracelet, everything now has built-in GPS. Even if it does not give precise information, real map and course directly to home door it will be enough to be not lost. At least you find the way to somewhere, not obligatory to where you wanted, but to safety. And in the case of global GPS fault (sudden nuclear war with space explosions, killing all satellites in minutes without any preliminary signs) navigation will be not the most significant problem.
  3. Knowledge can be restored. Functionality can be redistributed. Skills can be taught. But there are some people, who do real black magic, and it can not be transferred or distributed. It simply appears by itself... or does not appear at all and fade. Everybody says "welll, what we can dooooo..." and continue the march ahead, but much more slowly, and sometimes even in wrong direction. In modern world this magic ceased to appear at all. No room for it, from the very beginning, from kindergarten. Everybody taught to do as usual, to work in team, to fulfill requirements and execute commands - and finally they grow just to team members, sometimes team leaders, but never to pathfinders, inventors, breakthroughrers. But nobody notices this, as it is not a hole, but simply an absence of something unseen. Magic leaves this world - and nothing comes instead.
  4. in level fligt with engine thrust only against drag everything determined by simple equation - weight=lift*cos A. It means if you are on 45 - you have 1.5G (roughly), 60 - 2g (exactly). Speed in this case does not matter, it affects time of turn and radius, but not the acceleration. So if you have to change speed to 80 kn (40m/s) and have only 0.5G (5m/s2) available acceleration it takes 8 sec even if you accelerate straight against speed vector, which is not true in case of usual bank turn. Of course if you fly slow but able to upkeep the same load factor (I do not know machine which is able to upkeep 1.5g at 40 kn without huge thrust, only by wings lift - usually 40kn is stall speed even for light planes, means they are able to achive only 1G, but may be some ultralights and STOL with stall speed 30 can) you turn will be faster and narrower, as you have to change less speed with the same acceleration. Time will be N times less, radius is N2 less. last paragraph is about the same level turn but if you see it from (imagine instead of wind) straight moving car. Plane makes the same halfcircle - but from the car you see only distorted path, not circle at all, so nothing surprising in visible change of speed.
  5. first of all forget about wind, just static calculations you cannot make 180 turn in 4 sec with "normal acceleration" - 80 knots difference = 40m/s - you must have constant (straight back, no change in direction or value) 1G acceleration (OVERload! not total with gravity!) for 4 sec only for this. When you turn level 45 banked on average light plane (where engine is just enough to keep it in air) you have 1.5G total, with rotating vector, and 180 turn takes about 15sec. If you make it for 4 sec - you get not 1.5g but 4g (lets take a plane which can support 4G on 40kn, with huge engine which can force you into desired path without any wings or other silly stuff, like rocket), and this is more than enough for required velocity change. Now add wind. You will not sense acceleration vector rotating not as before, on steady circle, but by other curve - giving the same side acceleration (total zero, as you had zero side speed before and got zero after turn) but different acceleration in direction of course/wind.
  6. there is wellknown expression in Russian, created by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky - "the best view to this city - if you sit in a bomber!" (Лучший вид на этот город - если сесть в бомбардировщик)
  7. Just to control another machine. Heavy truck, train (model and real), forklift, crane, intercontinental ballistic missile (I am not joking, this was my military speciality), motorbike, digital logic control, routers-networks-computers, now - plane. Without all these silly humans! Just machine and its possibilities, from the smallest to the biggest. Blue sky under feet, 100 tonnes behind, electronic system of 40-storey building, world wide network structure etc with me at the control. The Great Dark Power of technology! And if it is possible to gain good money from this fun (not always, of course, but at least my main profession comes from this) - it is double funny!
  8. I already got these books, but not sure if it is enough. RPL exam was passed successfully, but with all these laws, meteorology and other stuff I am very weak. No way to understand what is realy needed IRL and what is needed on the exam. online course is onlineaviationtheory.com - not clear what is it at all.
  9. At last I finalised my ppl+aeros, now its time to go ahead. If anybody knows any good PPL theory provider in Sydney (and better not in June, but now. AltoCap started their course today, so I missed it)? I found online course - is it real?
  10. 2008 - Bankstown, training flight + licence flight test.
  11. there is an old army way to operate in "mils", 1/1000s. One mil angle means you diverted (missed) to 1/1000 of distance covered. And when all your (very simple in this case - no numbers like 1/60, feet in kilometer etc) calculations done you only have to change result to grads, dividing it to 17 (accurate number is 314.15.../180 = 17.45) and thats it. And if your gun sight or compass (additionally) graded in mil, you can avoid even this last conversion.
  12. it is aimed to be used in Europe and other places with leaded avgas for 3 euro per litre and A1 on usual price. In this case its better to eat 30 l/h of kerosene rather than 20 l/h of avgas - $40/h difference!
  13. SVFR in Bankstown is rather usual, I met it several times in 2 years. Clouds 1500 and/or unsufficient visibility (as their robot reports and it is officialy included in atis) and thats it - tower has no choice, SVFR or flight will be illegal. They just cover their backs, supposing everybody can fly without problems in real conditions.
  14. +1. And not an ordinary 2seater, but something capable to do something interesting. Aerobatics, bush flights, seaplane (there are some LSA amph seaplanes), speedy touring - not just a flying (old) ordinary holden! Explore new places (where usual plane can not land at all), new things, new possibilities. Use it as great toy! Like a (second or even 3rd) fun car - it may be historic rarity or race bullet, 4*4 or campervan, bus or truck, but never an ordinary sedan, too young to be in museum but too old to be a toy by itself.
  15. Some engines do not open valves until compensators are filled with oil, and after long pause oil drains out from there. It causes no compression at all, as no intake happens. Mb this is the same for rotax. How are valve drives done there?
  16. Seagulls from nearest black-operated landfill, plane on flight to annexed Crimea... Russia as it is.
  17. this is the reason why AV must drive only on dedicated controlled roads, where robots clearly know that the road is serviceable (all marking, beacons etc are ok, no obstacles, debris, roarworks in the middle of the lane etc) or refuse to take control if they have no such a confirmation from road authority (radio beacons on entry and along the way). It is impossible to achieve on usual road, but on dedicated lane on highspeed highways - why not? O-bahn in Adelaide works this way with stone-age mechanical steering adn everything is ok, they drive 25tonn buses with 100kmh and almost nobody died.
  18. This is usually not a big problem as you can predict what you hear. Very limited dictionary and options help to understand. Even me, with not native English, can do it. Some ATC in Bankstown have terrible accents and it still works.
  19. autonomous cars have to work in environment with idiots all around. To predict, not only react to, events like "this sheep ahead will turn right from the leftmost lane with heavy braking", robots can not do this without armour and big guns. In the air everything is much easier, at least untul there will be the same number of users on manual control. Robots can communicate to each other, not a problem, so very dense air traffic can go without any problem, but the single manual-controlled craft and corpses will be carried by carts. Road autonomouse cars just went the wrong way. Instead of making automatisation for simple but time-consuming conditions (drive on highway etc) they try to automatise everything, that is unreal. Only Tesla tries to do something like this with their advanced auto control, but they rely on road marking which is unreliable at all, it can be invisible or be erased any moment due to repairs etc. Robots must rely on robot-readable data, like undersurface cable, roadside static reflectors or something like this. Not everywhere, but for example if Msystem in Sydney will be equipped with such a markings - lot of users will pay for cars which can drive out of city manually, set on M1, autonomousely drive to Campbelltown and again 10 km of manual drive to home. Especially if it will be dedicated line, for robots only.
  20. As there are only 2 places in Sydney - Bankstown and Camden (Wgong is too far away) - you have no choice. Bankstown is accessible by bus from railway station, but it is extremely unreliable and slow, you have to plan 45 mins to get to airport from station, and may be not in time because the bus did not appear at all. But I do know one bloke who does ride there by train from city. Buy a cheap motorbike and be happy. You definitely do not need to go there if there is rain, hurricane etc, and in good whether the cheapest scooter will do the job. Anyway learning to fly will cost you much more.
  21. speed limit but not the transport speed. To get from my place (Sydney, right near KS airport) to WaggaWagga CBD by car - 5 hours, $70 for fuel and a few invisible bucks for car itself. To make the same way by plane - 40 mins (by car, with bus it takes 1.5h) to Bankstown, 30 min at least to prepare, taxi etc, 3 hours to fly, and it ends in Wagga airport, from where I will need some lift, so add another 0.5-1h for final leg. 4 hours in the best case and about $600-700 for plane and fuel. If destination is Adelaide - everything is even worse, I drive there 24 hours (with all rests) for $200 and absolutely do not care about weight and volume limitations for baggage. Slow cruise plane will do it with 1-2 fuel landings (Wagga and Mildura?), 10-12 flight hours so with obligatory good stationary rest in some hotel and for $1500-2000. It looks definitely not as a transport, but as a toy forced to do real job. If the plane can do 200 kn - of course everything is much better, except the price.
  22. if the plane is slow but can land anywhere - and really does it regularly! - its good. But I do not understand how it is possible to fly on machine which can not do anything except flying as is. Takeoff and land only on its own base, fly only 50 miles around as it does not have more fuel and even these 50 miles require an hour, can not be a sporty toy or carry joyful company, etc etc - nothing. It is funny to fly when you start, birds fly over the rainbow, SO CAN I! - but this is not for long. Unfortunately it is impossible to collect all these special possibilities in one machine, at least if you are not a billionaire and can afford a full zoo of different planes, but at least some of them must be available and used. 200+ knots cruiser, bush stol, seaplane, aerobatics, 4-6seater (or possibility to take your bike with you), para dropper, what else - everybody can choose his favorite way, in accordance with money of course. But to choose, not to sit in the middle. And the choice requires knowledge/experience.
  23. first - learn to fly! There are so many ways in aviation, and before you choose you should understand what is it, and which one suits you. It can be slow soaring in the cheapest ultralight around your home base or aerobatics in expensive sport machine, cruising between big cities with huge airports or exploration of wilderness with small seaplane... you choice can change 10 times when you get experience. "Just to fly!" - you satisfy this wish after first 50-100 hours, but projects like kit building are for years (several hundreds hours, if you can spent 10h pw this is a year or two). Try different options with club/rented plane, try to look what is going on, then decide. It will be your most expensive toy, so do not hurry to make any strategic decision from the very start.
  24. it depends on load. It can be really busy time in Bankstown, with planes landing in constant flow (to be 4 in landing queue when reporting Warwick for 29R - this is not unusual!) and queue on holding point to take off. Regular time is 10 mins from battery on to take off with all taxiing, checks, waiting etc, but it can be more than 20 mins. Landing is usually fast, to be ordered GA due to busy runway is rather rare situation, ATC prefer to line up everybody in air and sometimes to divert someone to central rwy.
