  1. For me it's a compilation of a few things, aircraft attitude, noise and feel of controls. Don't really think about control column position but I suppose it might be part of it. The only time I look at airspeed is in something a bit faster and heavier to make sure the aircraft is OK for flap extension.
  2. Depends.........................what do you do if the aircraft doesn't have a stall warning? Safe slow flight can be achieved without reference to an audible warning or an airspeed indicator.
  3. Maybe if the world started doing something now then it would not be so catastrophic when it becomes a problem? Alarmist silly talk.......yes?
  4. Could be but usually pilots of Lead aircraft, VLAT and LAT's don't go backwards to fly single engine aircraft. As I said, SEAT pilots wouldn't be flying the stuff that school is training on.
  5. Yep, used to be a few Ag aircraft there. Eastern have a Dash service there from Sydney that is twice as expensive as a flight to Bali, still rather go to Armidale though.
  6. 25T sounds a lot, 250 sounds a bit more realistic. If we ever get around to recycling in this country (Instead of sending overseas) we will get better.
  7. Wasn't saying the oscillations were a risk, just a bit annoying. Depending who was flying as to how bad they were, some would let it wallow others would keep on top of it until turbulence set it going again.
  8. Here's an example of why general aviation is going the way of the Dodo https://www.armidaleexpress.com.au/story/6669536/airport-rent-takes-off-for-armidale-aero-club/?cs=471
  9. Australians who fly firebombing aircraft are agricultural pilots to start with, they get experience flying AG before they go firebombing. As opposed to Canadian and American pilots who can get into fire bombing without any previous low level experience, we have fire pilots who come from North America to Australia who have never flown AG. That link you included showed they train with Callair and Super Cub, firebombing pilots usually fly Air Tractor 802's. The fuel load in an 802 is more than the gross weight of either a Super Cub or Callair, then add 3 ton of retardant and just over 3 ton of aircraft. I'm a bit puzzled why a fire pilot would go to a school to fly those aircraft unless it was for nostalgic reasons.
  10. according to news channels, that would be a "Cessna"
  11. No to nuclear, taking into account decommissioning nuclear is vastly more costly than alternative sources. Storage of waste another major issue, seems those in favour of nuclear say just bury it and let future generations worry about the problems. Talk about temperatures 8000 years ago, they are talking 500,000 year half life for nuclear waste. Short term gain for a few, long term pain and annihilation of our planet in the long term. We also have to stop digging uranium from our ground, only real use is small amounts for medical use. The amount of humans on our planet is the biggest issue facing our future.
  12. Except the oscillations from that V tail
  13. Lab might have been seeing eye dog Either that or it was Doctor going for a run
  14. Depends what job you are going for, as a pilot in GA (AG and fire) work has dropped away to virtually nothing. Weather plays a big part but it's a very mercenary profession, a lot of AG pilots now go overseas for employment. Might be different this winter with the rain they will be screaming for pilots shortly but as I said a lot of pilots have organised work away. When AG work is on your expected to fly 60 days straight then as soon as the work dries up your gone. Summers are a bit different on fires, if your on contract work that means work for at least 3 months. Last winter I decided not to go away and stayed and worked locally any work I could get, clearing native forest of weeds and pines/planting trees and welding/fabrication. All casual work (No sick pay) with no guarantee of continuing work past the weekend, pays enough to keep some groceries in the cupboard and that's about it.
  15. Agreed Bruce, life now is harder. It's crept up on us in the last 40 years or so, incrementally, not in one hit. Wages and conditions in real terms have gone backwards alarmingly compared to cost of living. There seems no such thing as a permanent job, either casual or permanent casual whatever that means.
  16. In Australia with most jobs now being casual there is no sick pay, you either go to work sick or can't pay the rent. Can't pay the rent then it's out on the street with the other homeless people and ex-veterans. How Australia has progressed in the last 30 years.
  17. What about the one Rod Birrel was selling in England? That was the same construction as a Thruster with a nose-wheel just called something else.
  18. Aluminium tube construction, sailcloth covering. One of the 4 million Thruster derivatives
  19. Not one I've seen in this country, unusual cruciform tail
  20. No retracts I think, aircraft landed safely with no problems. Good outcome.
  21. I have flown aircraft with and without VG's, never been able to tell a big difference between the 2. The aircraft fitted with VG's did have a VERY slight firming of the controls at slow speeds, couldn't tell a lot of difference with take-off/landing speeds. Could only be I'm still learning to fly and haven't fully got the grasp of it yet I'll admit I did only watch a couple of minutes before I nodded off watching the linked Vid. Was there any conflict of interest or admission of commission/gifts/gratuity/donation/remittance/handout from VG sellers admitted during the video? I know it's not a requirement with yotubby to have any basis in truth or factual basis, most is taken as truthful. The bush/stol market in the States has gone mad the last couple of years, the likes of a Super Cubs bringing stupid money.
  22. Heard emergency vehicles being called to an aircraft circling burning off fuel at Hamilton this afternoon. The aircraft had trouble with nose undercarriage.
  23. That video looked like a retractable 172, a Cutlass not a 182. The back window with a divider is a 172 feature, the 182RG had a one piece rear window.
