  1. Avocet, I tested one of those USB socket outlets in my panel, found it caused a lot of hash breakover on the radio whenever it was charging devices. Made the thing unusable if I wanted to maintain a listening watch. Haven't bothered tinkering with ferrites and such as yet
  2. Bex.. you are close on the diagram above but not quite. The extrusions are 6061 and do follow the airfoil shape on the front, not pretty if you mix them up as some hapless builders have discovered. As Downunder postulated, only one set of spars are sold per planset to prevent multiple builds out of the one planset. If a wing is damaged and requires a new spar I believe they will sell another if evidence of the damage is provided. The Onex uses back to back right angled sections for simplicity.
  3. Poor contacts in the socket plug arrangement and/or the plug is vibrating in the socket?
  4. I beg to differ (having actually built one) .. the extrusions are substantial at the root and an odd looking T shape, specially made for the Sonex, Waiex and Xenos wings. Edited added pic..
  5. A Sonex can be built entirely from plans.. but will still need factory supplied wing spars. (special extrusions)
  6. Tried enlarging but too fuzzy to make out properly
  7. ABC News story here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-18/chopper-bogged-in-lake-eyre-during-light-plane-rescue-bid/6328094 Bit hard to make out the aircraft type, but doesn't look very happy!
  8. Jetr, are you referring to ferrites on the ANR headset leads?
  9. Who cares if its impractical at this stage, the same things were said about early space flight... Can we quantify the flow on effects of technology advancements out of the NASA space programs of the 60's and 70's? What an absolute marvel of technology and engineering
  10. Not sure if these are what you're after from RAus Members Market: 4376 TRELLEBORG T510,140-6 10 ply rated tyre TRELLEBORG T510, 140-6 10 ply rated tyre (tube type) $99 each (+p&h) Replaces 13x5.00-6 Give your aircraft the tyres you deserve! Iridium plugs

Hi Jetjr, I'll take 8 Cheers
  12. The Sonex seat cannot be lowered once installed.. stick on pads would definitely not look cool ha ha
  13. Peter Anson, a Sonex builder has done just that, The installation has had some challenges, its documented here: http://sonexaus.wikispaces.com/Peter+Anson+-+Sonex+894 The Bristell did use a fence as well but I believe they have gone back to Jabiru style ducts. Cheers Tony
  14. Hey Peter, I used to fly my old 95:10 machine with a dual visor jet helmet. Hot, heavy and after an hour somewhat uncomfortable but I thought looked pretty cool ha ha I could use it again but it would probably bump the canopy on the LH side. Have been looking around for a lighter more compact version but its not high on the priority list. Cheers Tony
  15. Hi Jeff, not sure what you mean by low wing temperature wise, but I will assume cockpit temperature under a bubble canopy. With the aircraft sitting on the ground on a sunny warm day it can get quite hot, especially with polished wings that focus sunlight on the cockpit like a big solar reflector! Its get hot enough to shutdown the iPad in a few minutes, so I don't leave it in the cockpit during a fuel stop or chin wag session. Once airborne I haven't noticed the reflections, or the glasshouse effect quite so much. I have good cockpit venting which helps. The warmest day I have flown was around 36C on the ground no cloud cover, quite comfortable airborne at height but a hat is a must for the noggin and a good dollop of sunscreen. Some guys have fitted a Koger sun shade or the cheaper alternative of car stick on shades to cut down the sunshine. I haven't flown in winter yet but I believe the solar effect is quite good to keep the cockpit comfortable if its a sunny day. Cheers Tony
  16. An alternative is a series of \\\\\\\\\\\\ markings painted or marked behind the sight tube. The fuel in the tube distorts the markings, allowing easy determination of the fuel level.
  17. It'd be a good deal, $26k was my landed cost for just an airframe kit in 2006
  18. So-de-mo.. So-de-me.. got a ring to it?

    Subsonex

Apparently someone in NSW has ordered the 7th Subsonex kit in production.. Fourth paragraph.. www.sonexaircraft.com/press/releases/pr_021615.html
  21. Jeez.. don't you guys work like the rest of us? lol
  22. From : https://www.raa.asn.au/accident-and-incident-summary-2015/ "Initial test flight after Taxi Trials and Ground Running - Normal Take Off & Climb Out (Rwy 23) at 3200 RPM, until approximately 300 ft when a rapid increase in all Cyl Temp was noted to over limits: (Min 140 F - Max 450 F). Engine slowly decreased in RPM to 2500 RPM with a significant power loss. 70 Kts was maintaining with lowering nose while positioning for landing on Rwy 13. Advised "All Traffic" that 8568 was positioning for immediate landing on Rwy 13. Established 65 kts with zero flap on Final Descent to Rwy 13 when Aircraft stalled at approximately 100 ft AGL with a Right Wing Drop. Aircraft impacted ground and caught fire and Pilot exited aircraft. Canopy had shattered enabling Pilots exit" Published clean stall straight and level is around 44 knots. From my limited experience in 4 different Sonex airframes, they stall around the published figures. Not mentioned but I know the aircraft also had hand controls fitted for the owner
  23. Sorry if this has been posted before.. another reason not to jump out of serviceable aircraft! Edited to go straight to youtube
