Such a lovely day today had to go for a quick fly - local round Camden and back in the scenic way (via the river at 800 feet) followed by a few circuits. Youngest son was doing the flying so I just went along for the ride

Have you been out practicing Kaz - maybe a demo at Wentworth would be good ? -
Kaz - using the word brake and Auster in the same sentence ??

Using rotary hand pumps for refueling with MoGas
IanR replied to matt walsh's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
I just have the basic pipe with the inline filter. As its only 20 litre cans I just need to be careful - and with the pressure relief valve its easy to cut off. I don't have over-wing tanks though. -

I also use a Tanami pump - and incorporated a filter in the hose - works fine -
Interesting that its announced at an airport most RAA people can't fly to ?

27th is the Sunday when people will be departing - best day to visit I think would be Saturday See you there Kaz ?

Maybe we could also have a week where only topics about good things that are happening rather than constant criticism of events, etc !

The most important thing I find is to make sure you understand the approach speeds and limitations. Read the POH and use a checklist. If you get the speeds right the rest seems to work OK (at least in my experience)

Tail wheel flying - gusting crosswinds
IanR replied to red750's topic in Student Pilot & Further Learning
Hmmm - once you take out the instructor time for solo doesn't seem too bad -

Is that rate for dual or solo ? -
Hi Kaz, no we didn't take ABA. I delivered Neil's C180 MTF up to him in Gove as he is working there for a year or so with MAF. There is no fuel at Mataranka Homestead. We filled up at Borroloola and then Jabiru. As an aside, Jabiru is not a good place to stay for people flying in as there is no availability of transport. We wanted to do the yellow waters thing but couldn't get there. Cooinda is better but was booked out when we were there.

We did the trip over the past couple of weeks - thanks for your advice Russ - Adels Grove was fantastic. We ended up staying Longreach, Adels, Mataranka Homestead and Jabiru on the way to Gove

Warning - iOS 8.3 upgrade breaks iPad connection to external GPS
IanR replied to ayavner's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
8.4 fixes the problem -
Only just came across this thread - however here are some weight numbers for various C172 we operate (or did) C172P empty 684 MTOW 1089 C172S empty 768 MTOW 1157 C172R empty 759 MTOW 1113 C172S G1000 empty 801 MTOW 1157 As you can see from this sample the earlier models are better at carrying a load - later ones not so much. Very good with lighter PAX

Thanks for the feedback - looks like I will have to stick with iPad - the features mentioned above are great. If the two were very close I would move across but doesn't seem worth it yet.

With the current issues around iPad and external GPS I am going to get to the stage where I need to upgrade - either a new iPad mini with internal GPS or an android tablet with RWY. This thread has not been active for a while - any updates on how RWY is going ? Is it close enough now to OzRunways to be a viable alternative ? Its certainly a bit cheaper to buy an android tablet such as a Nexus 9. I have been running RWY on my phone but its hard to get a feel for it on that size device

That is correct - the transponder usually has a separate altitude encoder
-
Whatever it is - its certainly not a thing of beauty

Its a long time ago but my first solo is still clear in my mind - I don't even remember first solo to the training area. The other one that sticks in my mind is my first nav - seeing the vast countryside away from the coast from a different perspective The thing that most surprised me about first solo was how much better a C150 climbs with only one person in it - and then calling downwind (right hand circuit) - seeing no instructor blocking the view - and thinking that I did not have any backup for the landing.

A taildragger endorsement in one day ?

I am planning a trip up to Gove with my wife. Travelling from Burketown across to Mataranka Homestead I will need to find fuel - Mcarthur River Mines is a good option. Has anyone flown through there ? In the ERSA it says Avgas available - and 24 hour PPR for landing. Is permission generally given ? Any info would be welcomed !
