  1. Interesting. Where were your courses run? I suspect that most on our course were composite also, apart from my CH701 and a Brumby.
  2. As a retired LAME I can agree with all of the above. I’ve seen some appallingly maintained or repaired machines which are accepted because the paperwork is perfect and CASA inspectors aren’t allowed (apparently) to pull off panels. Also, even as LAME I had to do the SAAA MPC to maintain my own aeroplane and as stated above the MPC doesn’t really cover maintenance. My impression was that it mainly covers corrosion which, let’s face it, isn’t going to be a problem for home builders for a while.
  3. Joerow, what did you end up buying?
  4. Yes, I only had about 75hrs on the existing one. If this new one does the same I’ll be looking for a different option. I have a solid lifter engine.
  5. Thanks for the responses. As a LAME I am familiar with most of the aeronautical coolers, just not familiar with the automotive part used on the four cylinder Jabiru. I have bought a new one, just curious whether they are repairable.
  6. I have a Drivetech 0555-331015 oil cooler on my Jabiru engine and it appears to be leaking from the base of one of the threaded inlet/outlet bosses. Can anyone on here tell me whether these bosses screw into the cooler body or are permanently fixed eg swaged?
  7. Does this mean that RA Aus and SAAA have split their efforts now? So much for “all aviators under one sky” if so!
  8. I have two of them in my old tin box (CH701) I don’t have experience of ‘high end ones’ but am completely happy with these. Can surely hear the difference if I switch the ANC off. Hope that helps.
  9. I think that light aviation in Australia has problems enough without us squabbling amongst ourselves. We all have our reasons and preferences for the type of flying we choose to do, but should be, and I certainly am, interested in everyone’s flying stories. Sites like this one are ideal for sharing thoughts, stories and experiences in a friendly manner.
  10. As probably everyone on here knows, I fly a CH701 with a 2200 Jab engine. It is lighter, simpler and cheaper than a Rotax and it is MADE IN AUSTRALIA. We should be supporting our manufacturers not running them down. Yes, they had their problems, but I know from experience that so also did Lycomings and Continentals, don’t know enough about Rotax to comment. There are plenty of Jabirus at Warwick and they make the hours without problems. I still think that most of the problems can be traced to lax maintenance.
  11. Got lucky with the Argus. Worked on a Ranger engined one at Personal Plane Services at Booker many years ago. Never flew it nor flew in it, but did get to taxi it and do an engine run. No idea on the current one yet!
  12. Straight out guess. Fairchild Argus?
  13. To get my Odyssey back from dead flat I first hooked it up to another battery until it had a bit of charge then charge it at 8amps on my smart charger.
  14. Kind of looks like a Mooney except for the fin.
  15. Did much the same with my Odyssey. Apart from trouble getting the charger to actually charge it, it has been working well for over a year.
  16. Not sure, from what I’ve seen, what remains to be done. Would you mind elucidating?
  17. Don’t know what Wagner’s have done to upset you. My experience at Wellcamp has been absolutely positive. Only thing I don’t like is their landing charges for our littlies! From Warwick easier to get to, easier cheaper parking, good cafe (in my experience) friendly staff. What’s not to like?
  18. I asked that question of CASA at one of their safety seminars and their rep’s only response was “why would you want to?”
  19. D11 is wood and fabric with the typical Jodel cranked wing! Bit of a problem this one.
  20. If you already, as I gather from your post, have a GA licence, why change it, unless you have a medical problem preventing you from keeping it. I fly a VH registered Zenith stol CH701 which can be either GA or RAA. With VH I don’t have to pay an annual fee to anyone and I have no problem with controlled airspace. I’ll probably receive flak over this, but what started out as a good idea has evolved into (as FlyingVizsla says) a minor arm of CASA so I see no advantage in changing.
  21. Closest I can get is maybe a Chris Heintz design for Robin. Has the look from trailing edge back of a 2160, but obviously not one of them.
  22. Has a definite Robin HR variant look, no idea which though!
  23. Great discussion, but what aircraft is it???
  24. Mandatory!!!!! What, do you work for CASA or something? I’ll go with recommended, but too much mandatory already.
