  1. Welcome, the more the merrier! Bearcat? Bear hawk?
  2. Since it was in it’s day, the World’s fastest interceptor to height and with an original endurance of about 30minutes (I know later versions were better) I don’t suppose pilot comfort was high on the list of priorities!
  3. I have seen a couple of F15s go vertical into a clear blue sky until they disappeared from view, but remember that the Lightning was doing that 50+ years ago. As kids in Scotland we used to watch them going after the Bears. They flew from RAF Leuchars.
  4. Hi Joe, welcome. Lots of interesting stuff on here. We do the grey nomad bit as well, hard to strike a balance between flying and travelling!
  5. Well said, but I suspect they are deaf and blind as well as stupid!
  6. The local group, the Queensland Recreational Aviation Association are fighting it with everything they have. The Council have mounted thousands of dollars worth of video cameras, monitored at the Council offices to record movements. As I said in a previous post, they have put a bloody great chain and padlock on the main gate by the terminal building so visiting pilots cannot be met by car or taxi and would have to climb over the gate. Very, very aviation unfriendly I would say!
  7. Yes, I think it is all the cost of convenience. I like having just a ten minute drive, means that I can be off the ground not long after first light in the Qld Summer without major inconvenience. Another beautiful early morning flight today!
  8. About $2,400 per year. My CH701, a Jabiru, a BD4 and two little Ultralight Spitfires. As you say, insurance is the next biggest and then I have an annual sub for the Jeppesen data for the Skyview plus annual class 2 medical and stress echo because I had a heart attack! Add to that SDRC’s extortionate avgas prices and now their intention to levy landing fees, they say that if you fly circuits you will only pay one, but they are imposing these charges on the gliding club also and as you are aware, a glider cannot do a touch and go and of course the tugs do a lot of full stop landings in a day. Not sure how this will be resolved yet but not real happy!
  9. Trouble with compulsory elections is that one ends up voting for what appears to be the least worst choice! Even though none of them are worth a light.
  10. Can’t argue with any of that. Half of the problem is that I’m not a super confident pilot. I’m not fond of getting bumped about in hot (Qld!) windy conditions and fighting all the way down final. I am getting better though, but none the less a beautiful, cool, smooth morning like today is an absolute pleasure.
  11. If you have an ammeter, it will show a massive discharge even if you can’t hear that it is stuck.
  12. You might be slightly missing my point or maybe I’m just old enough to remember when things were different. The idea of paying rates, both domestic and hangar was to pay for Council services and facilities, but now it only seems to pay their over-inflated salaries and everything else, we have to pay for. Give them their due, it is not just local government that do that. Registration fees, or as it is called in the UK, Road Fund Tax, was introduced to pay for new roads, but nowadays goes into consolidated revenue and we have to pay tolls on new roads.
  13. I’ll have to check whether they have an annual fee. Whilst I still don’t like it, at least I could afford to still fly every day!
  14. It’s funny, I get all despondent and fed up with everything to do with flying and then I have a flight like this morning’s one, just after first light and I remember why I love it!
  15. Might have to think about it. I used to live at Karalee and had the aeroplane at Coominya, a 45minute drive. I moved to Warwick specifically to be close, 10minutes,from the airfield.
  16. Mmm! Might be possible. They already get hangar rates and I buy their extortionate avgas also. Very unfriendly Council currently. They have put a bloody great chain and padlock on the gate at the terminal building so taxis and other vehicles cannot get in to pick up visiting pilots as, for example the Winjeel that was there this morning. Anyone might think that they don’t want fly-in visitors!
  17. Trouble is, it is another eleven dollars. I moved house to Warwick to live close to the airfield so that I could fly every day, weather permitting. Previously I lived in Ipswich where the rates were higher than Brisbane then discovered Warwick’s are even more extortionate. Also pay hangarage, a portion of which, I am sure, also goes back to the council as rates. Just get fed up being ripped off by every level of government! Would be better if I knew how long my money has to last!
  18. Yes, I must admit that in all of my working life as a LAME I never minded getting greasy or dirty but I HATED getting sticky and itchy working with glass and resin! I still think it is easier to repair metal airframe than glass, but that might just be because it is within my expertise.
  19. I am finding this all very interesting and will love to know the eventual result. Overall it makes me happier with my tin can (CH701) It certainly sounds like one sometimes (thank goodness for active noise reduction headsets) but is much, much simpler to repair.
  20. I have the Jabiru composite prop on the 2200 on my CH701. It was pitched by Jabiru to suit the airframe, don’t ask me what they pitched it at! Don’t have a lot of hours on it yet but it is smooth as silk and if I go full rpm with the brakes on and then roll, I am off the ground in 3 seconds. I don’t think (I stand to be corrected!) the 100hp Rotax gets off much quicker. So far I am very happy with it.
  21. Try to ‘upload a file’ not sure how to do anything else!
  22. Phil, how do you manage to post such a large video? Anytime I try to post a video it says, file too large! and won’t post.
  23. Fantastic video, back when Britain had an optimistic aircraft industry! Flew on an East African Airways Super (I think) VC10 to Nairobi on honeymoon and many times on the various marks of Trident from Heathrow to Edinburgh. Most unique was the 3 1/2 engined Trident 3, had a booster engine for take off mounted above the centre engine. Interesting aspect, it was the only airliner (that I know of!) that was approved for reverse thrust before touchdown. Made for some fairly solid landings into Edinburgh! Also old enough to remember Red Pelicans (jet provost) Black Arrows (111sqn Hunters) and Blue Diamonds (English Electric Lightning)
  24. I used to watch Vampires taking off at Edinburgh Turnhouse airport and wondered if gear up was selected as part of pre take-off checks so that as soon as the weight came off the squat switches the wheels retracted. That was how quick it looked!
