  1. I have tailwheel endorsement but haven’t flown one for years because I think you have to be on top of your game to land them and back then I couldn’t afford to fly often enough to feel confident. My 701 has large wheels and I land it as if it is a taildragger, ie nose high a la three pointer. Only difference is nose comes down afterwards. I don’t categorically know, but I doubt if a taildragger would do much better. No doubt someone else on site will offer their opinion also!
  2. I have a Zenith STOL CH701. The aeroplane is STOL the pilot not so much, but even I get it off the ground with a 3 second ground run (not sure of the actual distance!) and back on again in about 100-150ft.
  3. Whilst I don’t disagree with that, it is only true when the aeroplane is new and or perfectly maintained. I have seen plenty of fairly iffy baffling over the years.
  4. Yes, the four cylinder black one as supplied by Jab. I have considered installing a bigger one but just want to fly, not work on the plane. Also I can’t track down a suitable one (not that I have tried very hard)
  5. Yes I know, but since 4 is directly behind 2 that is difficult to achieve. As long as they are all within limits I am happy. Up until I started flying this aeroplane, none of what I flew had all four cylinders, if any, monitored. Would have been interesting sometimes to see temps on C152, C172 or Cherokee 140 (maybe better that we couldn’t!)
  6. My engine temps are all in the black. I only have a problem with oil temp. Jabiru say 100C max continuous and 118C max but no info about how long that can be maintained. I don’t worry about CHT or EGT spreads as long as they are within limits.
  7. I've always had a preference for the 'circular approach' what I've always thought of as a 'fighter approach' because if you watch the old spitfires and hurricanes, that is pretty much what they do and I think a lot of Pitts biplanes and similar seem to do the same, but I have upset a few (more than a few!) instructors during check rides and biennials because of that.
  8. Glad I didn't go now. Won't be going again if that is what will happen every year. People visit fly-ins to walk around aeroplanes, no point in going if they can't do that!
  9. Does anyone know anything about the airstrip at Wyberba beside the New England Highway with the Bonanza on sticks? Doesn't seem to be in the Qld country airstrips guide.
  10. I'm a bit curious why the insurance doesn't cover repair costs?
  11. After reading all of this, I am so glad that I built a Zenith CH701 because when I damaged the firewall, nose gear and forward fuselage, repair was a simple, if time consuming, matter of fabricating the requisite new parts in accordance with the plans and then reassembling.
  12. Pity I didn't know you were nearby. I've been at Chain Valley Bay for a week but going home early tomorrow. Where do you fly,Warnervale Belmont or somewhere else?
  13. Answer to that is 'constantly' hard to put a time period on it but constantly is accurate!
  14. Forget airshow pricing. If you fly in to Toowoomba any day you will pay $12.50 to land plus I think the same again per hour parking, Wellcamp I am told is $60 landing fee, Archerfield I couldn't tell you but I bet it is not cheap.
  15. Welcome to the forum. I was in Ipswich for 30yrs, now based in Warwick. Where are you flying from?
  16. I know that feeling. My wife hates flying, except for some crazy reason she likes helicopters. If I end up selling it will be mainly because I don't want to travel alone. Local area and circuits yes, but I don't want to overnight without her.
  17. Yes, I have been away for a couple of weeks and was regretting not flying but from what I can see I wouldn't have been able to fly if I was there anyway!
  18. I flew with the late Alan Mayfield in his Emeraude from Gatton College airstrip a lot of years ago. Another aviator who died doing what he loved. Also flew in a CAP 10 which looks pretty much identical apart from a bigger fin and rudder, must have stronger spars etc I guess, with Hoof Proudfoot who died at Duxford in the crash of a P39. Never forget that our hobby can be dangerous!
  19. I'm surprised that no one has commented on 'nautical kilometres!!'
  20. Unless there is a new one since I was hangared there it is a 701 with a Suzuki car engine conversion.
  21. Maybe I won't worry so much about my crosswind landings after watching that lot!
  22. Hey biggles, why the caution!
  23. No, I had the Jab air box mounted on the left (from the cockpit) side of the lower cowling due to space considerations but could never achieve full static rpm, changed to the silicone hose and pod filter and static rpm is 3000. Filter is totally inside lower cowl but doesn't seem to be a problem.
  24. I didn't like the Jab air box setup either so I have electric carburettor heat and a pod filter. I don't currently have a balance tube from filter to carb, but it seems to function well like this.
  25. I bought a second-hand, read 'overhauled' 2200 Jabiru in mine from Jabav in Victoria. Since been factory rebuilt to nil hours by Jabiru through no fault of the engine but a prop strike. Cost about $10,000 dollars less than a Rotax would have been and a couple of thousand less than a brand new Jab. I really don't think you can generalise.
