  1. Thanks for the input, but I was aware why the holes are there, what I need to know is how to fix the problem.
  2. My engine is also solid lifter. I bought a rebuild rather than a new one. Don't you have a collector bottle on the firewall to catch the blow by?
  3. I have a 2200 Jabiru on my CH701. For a while I couldn't find an engine oil leak, it was and still is, nuisance value more than anything, using probably less than a teaspoonful of oil per hour, barely noticeable on the dipstick but spread nicely on the lower cowl. I eventually discovered that, inside the rocker boxes there is a small hole drilled through the back at the top, which exits between the fins above the cylinder. This I discovered was factory designed to prevent carbon build-up on the valve stems (I think) Anyway, a very small amount of oil or oil vapour blows out of these holes. The only suggestion from the factory is to lower the oil pressure, which I don't want to do. I am sure that somewhere on this site I read about that problem but I cannot find the post. Their solution had been to fill the little holes with high temperature RTV and to drill small holes in the rocker covers. I am hoping that whoever that was will read this and give me details of the size and positioning of the hole in the rocker cover.
  4. Try skyshop.com.au they are on Qld Sunshine Coast and are also Aircraft Spruce Australia.
  5. Not Jab aircraft but I have Jab engine and composite prop on my CH701. Runs quiet and smooth, no problem.
  6. Thanks for that. Don't really need a warning light, it is quite evident on my Skyview panel that the problem is there. I'd appreciate your info. Going out at the moment but I'll try Jake later, if he has not already seen this by then.
  7. I need the help of an electrical genius on this one. A few days ago, when I attempted to start my engine and I let the key return from the start position, the starter continued to run. With master switch and magneto switch off the starter continued to run although disengaged from the starter ring. My first thought was that it must be a stuck starter solenoid, however the easiest thing to try first was to remove the diode from the solenoid, so I did and the fault disappeared. To double-check I put the diode back and the problem returned. Removed it again and again the fault disappeared. Ok! Down to Jaycar for some new diodes, fit a new diode and the problem returned. I wondered if I might have mistakenly installed the diode the wrong way round so I reversed it but that didn't help. Currently I have no diode fitted and it is all working fine. What I need to know is what value diode I need to fit? I cannot find any info on that. The ones from Jaycar are marked 1000V 1A which I presume is 1000volts and 1 amp.
  8. I use graduated multifocals which darken in the sun. Never had a problem with headsets. A bit expensive at around $700 but way better than the $1000 that you suggest.
  9. Stop me and say hello. I'll have a Zenith STOL tee shirt on (assuming it is not so cold that I have a jumper on!)
  10. Lucky you, you aren't affected by the council's grab for cash at the airfield! Are you going to Wings over Warwick on Saturday?
  11. Any of the Kilcoy crowd or anyone else with a CH701 planning on being there?
  12. Hi also from Warwick, I'm in the blue hangar, where are you?
  13. I think that for a low time (even though I've been flying off and on since 1968) pilot, Skyview is the way to go.
  14. Skyview is lighter, cheaper (I estimate) than a suite of gauges. It tells me my ground speed, wind direction, crosswind component among other things, I thing it is great.
  15. Honestly can't say I have a problem with it, but then I don't have the gauges as a comparison/distraction.
  16. I like it, not good at STOL landings yet though and still getting used to how much it moves in bumpy air!
  17. I have a 10 inch Skyview in my CH701 based at Warwick. Feel free to come and have a look. I don't have back up gauges. As you say I am VFR only and hopefully can gauge airspeed by attitude and throttle setting should that ever be necessary. I didn't really have a problem adapting to the airspeed and altitude tapes and the rpm is analogue style with digital above it.
  18. I have a Zenith STOL CH701, you will love it, I do but it doesn't half move around in bumpy air. After 172s and Tobagos it takes a bit of getting used to.
  19. Interesting, but totally different from what Bert told me! I have no idea which version is correct but either way I am lucky to have known him.
  20. A long time ago, around 38yrs ago after leaving British Airways and before coming to Australia I worked for a company called Personal Plane Services which specialised in rebuilds and maintenance of vintage and veteran aeroplanes. When I started work there I met a bloke who appeared to be a sort of general dogsbody, he wore a green boiler suit and sort of shuffled around, sweeping the hangar floor or washing aeroplanes and sometimes taxiing aeroplanes to the fuel bowser and filling them up. One day I saw him climb into a Spitfire MklX and start it up. I thought, wow, I'd love to be able to taxi a Spitfire, but Lo and behold he didn't go to the bowser, he taxied out to the runway and took off! I later found out that he had never paid for an hours flying in his life, the company had taught him to fly and when the owner, Tony Bianchi was away he stood in as test pilot. His name was Bert Goodchild and I had the pleasure of flying with him on a few occasions most noticeably a couple of times in a Dragon Rapide.
  21. At age 70 I have to say that the most annoying phrases that I hear from doctors and physios are "At your age" and "Age appropriate" I am constantly terrified of having a car crash because I don't want to hear myself referred to on the news as "the elderly driver" I am totally convinced that, to a large extent, age is a state of mind. I think that I am as fit now at 70 as I was at 40, maybe fitter because at 40 I didn't exercise regularly. I use two exercise regimes on alternate days :- day 1, 15mins on each of rowing machine, cross trainer, treadmill and exercise bike. day 2 :- prescribed by the physio (age appropriate!) three sets of, 10 squats holding a 10 kilo kettle bell, 10 lunges and four different weight machines the names of which I do not know. I can honestly say, I will never be a gym junkie, I do it because I have to pass that annual medical. It is a chore and takes commitment, but if the alternative is to lose my licence I'll keep doing it.
  22. I a 70 and do an hours exercise at the gym five mornings a week. I don't know if it will keep me fit but I can only try. Not one of us knows how long we have left on this Earth. We can only do our best.
  23. By the way, where is Silverwood?
