  1. It oils in the wood (not water) that will apparently drain (due to gravity) to the lower end of the prop if it's left vertical for a long time. But, like Thruster88 says, surely the very high G's experienced by the spinning prop would very quickly throw out the oils etc. Too much to learn, so little time...

  3. Well, going by the electronics junk coming out of China, I'd find it hard to trust their airplane engines. Poor quality materials, parts driven beyond their specs. Shortcuts to keep costs down. It's scary and dangerous, people have been killed using cheap Chinese crap.
  4. I'm immeasurably clever (mum had me tested) and find physics etc. no great challenge. I did work for twenty years in a physics environment. It's just that some poor sod may think they are dumb for not knowing the deep stuff when in fact it's not even in the BAK syllabus. (I'll assume you did BAK for GA license). As a pilot just knowing what form drag, parasitic drag and being drag is all that's really needed. I do learn heaps reading the posts on this forum.
  5. It's all magic folks. Don't need to know this stuff to be a good pilot. Just the basics will do.
  6. Remember learning this back when I did air and water balancing. Turbulent flow in airconditioning ducts could not only cause damage over time, but cause low frequency oscillations that drove people bonkers.
  7. What worries me is the amount of solar panels going up. Drawing all that energy from the sun is going decrease its life span and then we'll all be up the creek.
  8. Was the sun at the same angle during both flights? Lower in the sky will have a much lower heating effect (follows some cosine law). What about grass, greener in Oct then Feb?
  9. I read that planes built for the war weren't built to last because they were expected to get shot out of the sky. There are a lot of 'fairytales' when it comes to war stories I'm sure.
  10. Maybe it's like CB radio. Some simple minded folks find it funny to annoy folks who cannot give them a good slap. Some people think trolling is an internet thing, but it's been around since the first radio signals went out...
  11. There are devices that will record G forces and turn rates that don't cost a fortune. A bloke I worked with had one on his model aircraft.
  12. I lent a mate my lawn mower, he mowed over rocks and stuff like they weren't there then couldn't understand why I never let him borrow it again. Some folks are just plain stupid.
  13. I was pretty annoyed at 1am this morning (27/01/2021) because some fool was doing circuits for about an hour! I'm right under the final approach to 21R at Parafield. Anyway, turns out the plane had a nose wheel problem, so I guess I'll let this one go.   15. I think folks with driving licenses should be picked at random, say 200 a year. Test their skills and knowledge of the rules. If they 'flunk' give three months and test them again. If they flunk again, make them do a coarse. You don't have to test the entire population, just a good sample to gauge if there is a problem. However, it seems to me that the vast majority of road accidents is caused by drugged up mental defectives that should be in secure places away from society and light.
  16. I'd be guessing but, I think the club planes needing the valves lapped so often is because they are used for training. If it were to apply to any Jab engine, it would be a very expensive exercise for many owners. Planes used for training get 'flogged' a lot harder than (say) me plodding around in the sky.
  17. What does one mean when they say "Foxbats don't have laminar flow wings"? Isn't all airflow over a wing 'laminar' (during normal flight) or am I having a senior's moment?

  20. First up, some LSA aircraft have a MTOW of 540kg, not 600kg. Secondly, as far as I know, LSA aircraft don't have the 'P' charts like I used to use when flying the Piper and Tobago. Maybe I'm wrong, but no P charts with my Jabiru. And thirdly, who would fly in 45°C temperatures? That's front bar temperatures. And, going by memory (that's had a few ports this evening) 45°C would give a density height of over 6000 feet in ISA conditions.
