You're right, we haven't transitioned to an elimination strategy. So why is it that WA is still locked down? Why is it Queensland has only just opened its borders after thumbing their nose at the southern states for weeks? They've "contained" it, but they don't want any of those filthy east-coast scum infesting their 'Covid-Free' colony... At what cost? Hundreds of thousands of people are out of work, the Government is funding some, temporarily, but again, at what cost? You don't need an Accounting degree to know that the federal budget will not see a surplus for generations to come. How much longer is the population supposed to tolerate these restrictions to guard against a virus that, for the most part, is survivable. So who is going to pay the piper? We will be in a budget deficit for decades trying to pay off what we have already spent. Yet alone if the government wants to continue throwing money at people. I would be astounded if the government doesn't use the need to restore the budget as an excuse to increase the GST to 15 or 20%

Couldn't agree more. We have "flattened the curve". The healthcare system is prepared to cope with the infections we're likely to encounter. We seem to have transitioned from a reduction strategy to an elimination strategy - and the various Governments are focusing on eliminating it to the detriment of everything from businesses, the economy, people's mental health and even so far as their superannuation balance in 30 years time!

I had to go to a TAFE center to get mine, and like yours, it was extraordinarily basic. I can easily see how Engrish speaking students can bluff their way through in that context, while still being completely unintelligible in an operational environment where they have to talk and fly.

Aahh, Grasshopper, what their website says, and what their legislation says are not always the same. (Maybe it's the same webmaster CAsA use?!?) If you look at the legislation, you can go outside the area if what you want to do cannot be done inside the area, so long as it is a permitted activity. IF you lived in the CBD and your plane was hangared at Mangalore, you can drive there to fly it if you are practicing to obtain or upgrade your licence. Personally, I wouldn't bother. If I was in that situation and sure I was in the right, I'd simply suggest "If you're sure I'm in the wrong, write the fine and I'll see you in court". You can leave home to go shopping. So go to Woolies and buy a loaf of bread and dozen eggs. What you do after shopping is irrelevant - you left home to go shopping and you went shopping. That being said, you are permitted (under the Stat At Home (Restricted Areas) directions) to leave home to attend a lesson to operate a vehicle or to practice for the purpose of obtaining a licence to operate a vehicle. Chapter 10(h). Vehicle is defined as the definition contained inthe Public Health & Wellbeing act -which happily defines it as " vehicle means any means of transport, whether self-propelled or not, and whether used on land or sea or in the air.". Chapter 1(B) of the Stay at Home directions says you must not leave the restricted area except as allowed under Clause 6,7,8,9 or 10 - with 10 allowing the operating a vehicle exemption. So yes, you can still go flying if you're putting in practice to obtain a licence - even if you need to leave your locked-down post-code to do it. Maybe organise a BFR at Mangalore if you really want to get the police excitable?? So go flying to practice for your PPL, or your RPL, or something else and tell the rozzers to sod off - even if you haven't bought that loaf of bread first!

The one I'm looking at - for certified aircraft anyway - is the TailBeaconX tied to an AV-30 to replace the AH. For the price of just a transponder, you get a multi-function EFIS that is TSO'd to replace your AH, and a 1090 ADS-B capable transponder & GNSS source for $7,200AUD. That's great value based on current prices of things like the GNX-375 which goes for $13K+ though in fairness the GNS-375 gives you a GNSS Navigator as well, which in turn gives you sole-means nav for IFR operations if you're that way inclined. If you want to go the AV-30/TailBeaconX route, and add a navigator, your total cost would be $7200(AV30/TailBeaconX)+$7600(GPS175)=$14,800

How many of us have Dynon or Garmin EFIS gear that is approved for ADS-B elsewhere, yet CAsA have ignored that. Best I can tell, you still need an uber-expensive GNSS position source to drive your transponder if you have such an EFIS...

Enough to know your generalised statement doesn't comply with the RAAus Ops manual. Yes, you can fly RAAus if your GA BFR is current, if, and only if that BFR was conducted in a GA aircraft under 1500Kg MTOW (or you were issued a rating/certain endo, etc). Hence my question about a Bonza or Cirrus - it ain't about performance and the ability to adapt, it is about complying with the Ops manual. If it (your last GA BFR) was conducted in a GA aircraft that has a greater MTOW, you don't comply with the requirements of the Ops Man and you still need an "RAAus" BFR - even though you are legal to fly a GA aircraft. Because - as has been proven in this thread - even when provided with the definitive answer, people still get it wrong and want to introduce personal opinion and hearsay into their response. Look at the grief I went through with my RV-9A & trying to get it on the RAAus register! Met the requirements of the CAO, proved it to anyone who asked, and yet I still had people upto and including RAAus Head Office saying "You don't meet the payload requirements, you can't register it RAAus", when that aspect only applied to LSA's, not homebuilt aircraft.

And if your last BFR was in a Bonanza or Cirrus...? It is not as simple as saying "If I can fly GA I can fly RAA"...

I don't want to come across as an angry prick, but you've been provided a reference to where that answer can be found in the RAAus Ops manual and a hyperlink to the manual for you to review...Have you looked over the RAAus Ops manual yourself to try to find the answer?

Not at all, it is quite clear, you just need to know where to look... Short answer, yes, if it was for the issue of a: CSU Tailwheel Retractable Float Floating hull or Controlled airspace endorsement or a flight test for the initial issue of an RPL/PPL/CPL. Reference is RAAus Ops Manual Section 2.07 Chapter 5(f)i-vi. And here's the curious thing - for the issue of any of the above endorsements, you do not need to be in an aircraft under 1,500Kg. You could do your retract endorsement on a Baron or Twinkie and it would still meet the requirements, but if you do a GA AFR then it must be in an aircraft under 1,500Kg...

I'd find another inspector, or respectfully say "Thanks, but no thanks, they aren't required so I'll be saving the weight". I've flown my RV under RAAus for the last 3 years with not even a landing light in order to keep the weight down, and not one person has said tickety-boo about it. I have got a few comments about how well it's livery stands out in the circuit though... ClintonB is on point here. Marine and non-aviation lights will work, and likely work well but... they may cause interference on certain VHF frequencies - then again, they may not too, but you can't just whack them on and go fly, you'll need to turn your squelch down and incrementally go across the VHF band to confirm they don't impact your reception. One thing to consider with marine nav lights though, is they are typically based on vessel size. For example, for vessels under 12m they appear to only require they be visible to 1NM, for vessels upto 20m they need to be seen out to 2NM. At the speeds we can close on traffic at, that's less than 30 seconds to identify the light, assess it, and maneuver to arrange separation. So check what size vessel they're intended for and go the higher one if you can afford it!

Something to be said for activating your ELT - if you have a fixed version - prior to landing. You can always call AMSA after landing if you are able to, and if you're not able, help is already coming. That's the only thing I don't like about carrying a 406 PLB in my vest, the inability to set it off before the landing.

With careful planning, a CAVU day and attention to detail. Me at 75Kg, Coey at 57Kg, a 5Kg wing pod and fuel for a 18Nm flight out at 100Kts a couple of orbits and 18Nm flight back with a 30 minute fixed reserve. Flight fuel was planned at 11L, with a 9L reserve. Departed with 24L and landed with about 12L in the right tank. The task was to scatter a (pilot) mate's ashes from the air, and fortunately his wife had many hours airborne with him, so she understood the planning and could ignore the "LEFT LEVEL LOW" and flashing "0" warnings on the EFIS. That RV-7 reportedly caused a lot of issues...A two-seat RV can be had in RAAus, but it is a niche machine, as I've said here previously. It suited my mission at the time (ME + not-quite-full tanks or Me+Mini-Me+2hrs fuel). I've gained a bit of weight and the kids are growing, so 600Kg is no longer sufficient, so to VH- she went. If it suits your mission, RAAus is fine. But you do need to be conscious of your weight to stay legal. Some people don't...

Just make sure they know what they're doing if you have a Dynon/Garmin EFIS. There's been several cases where they haven't been put into the relevant mode and, on the LAME doing their "normal" pitot/static or transponder test, have severely screwed up the ADAHRS. Simply reducing static pressure without a corresponding change in acceleration or position is catered for on these systems, but you can't just give it to the LAME and say "Call me when you're done!"

You certainly can. I had an RV-9A on the RAAus register for several years with two seats. 445Kg BEW so a 155Kg payload. I only flew with two adults once, and she was very slightly built but I was still legal. There's another, lighter, RV-9A up at Watts Bridge, also on RAAus' register, though mine has now gone to VH-.

$482 in a bundle at Bunnings. If you were wiring a plane from scratch, that's quite cheap for what you get in terms of traceability of wiring. Heck, even for the 4by or something it'd be good if you are adding a bunch of accessories!

A lot of it comes down to sheer cost, IMHO. I was somewhat lucky when I built my RV-9 in that the $$ was much higher than it is now. I have probably $130,000 in my RV, but to built 'like for like' today would probably cost you close to $170,000 and that is an awful lot of $$ for someone who is trying to pay off a mortgage, or even simply save a deposit. Even over a 10-year timeframe, that's $17,000 every year, or a mortgage payment for a smallish house. Then there's the ongoing costs. I'm up for $6,000 a year in fixed costs before I spin the prop. Add in $200/hour just in landing fees for circuit training at Warnervale or some other airports, why on earth would you pursue something so expensive for so little reward? Those that have newish RV's, or those composite wonders aren't going to put them up for sale unless they have to, because they'll lose far too much replacing them. As much as I love the flying, CAsA (with their million-and-one rules and tacking on "this is an offence of strict liability" onto every piece of legislation), RAAus (the Privacy Policy disclosure debacle and the direction the organisation is going) DOTRS (ASIC, need I say more) and the various airport owners (who mandate an ASIC, 24/48H PPR, have 12'high razor wire, guard dogs, and a 10-person armed response unit to guard against a wayward RAAus pilot or weekend warrior dropping in just to have a look-see, or refuel, all backed up by an ARO with an attitude*) have taken an awful lot of the enjoyment out of it. If I could have my own property and self-insure a cheaper 4-seater, then perhaps I'd reconsider, but there will shortly be one more plane advertised on the classifieds....mine... *May be a slight exaggeration

With the new Basic Class 2 you probably wouldn't even need RAA as a backup. The only medical difference between the two really is RAAus is essentially a self-declaration after asking yourself "Are you medically fit to drive anything?" whereas the Basic Class 2 is your GP assessing you against the AustRoads Commercial licence standards, which aren't that hard to meet, realistically...And you need to pay CAsA $10 for the privilege... FWIW, my opinion is if you can't meet the Austroads standards, you should be asking yourself if you are really fit to fly at all.

You're only covered by the RAAus insurance policy if you are participating in an RAAus activity. Flying VH has no relation to RAAus = no coverage. Reference is the RAAus insurance certificate.

I simply pointed out that you are asking aircraft owners to trust your company with very valuable data, data that may not be able to be reproduced if it were lost, yet you didn't secure your own website well enough that it was apparently hacked to be selling cannabis-related products under the banner of "Flight Safety Solutions" and your name. IF you can't secure your own website, or even notice when it has been compromised then in my view it doesn't bode well for securing customers data.
