  1. My guess is because there would be much more resistance to flow in a tube filled with oil than air that all the tubes in the cooler quickly fill with oil. Worked on a foxbat recently with oil cooler ports on the bottom.
  2. https://consultation.casa.gov.au/regulatory-program/dp-2206fs/ A report will now be prepared and released in the first half of 2023 and then more consultation. Responses from individuals and organisations can be read in the above link.
  3. I would try and get some unbrako socket head cap screws, they are the real deal. There is always a possibility of counterfeiting a name brand. Available in metric 8.8 and 12.9 grade https://www.unbrako.com.au/
  4. Unfortunately AN bolts don't come in metric as far as I am aware. Commercial bolts now are a lucky dip, lowest bidder gets the wholesale.
  5. The organisers of the event should not need insurance if it is spelled out to all the participating PILOTS IN COMMAND, that they must operate their aircraft in accordance with casa regulations while participating.
  6. In a fuel injected lycoming it dumps fuel under the aircraft, lots of fuel. Running the boost pump with the engine not running can be problematic for the 912 as well if carb float valve does not shut off. Engine fires while trying to start 912 powered aircraft are not in heard of.
  7. Having heavy floats, we had a pair from a customer 912 weighing 12grams just last week, would exacerbate carburetor problems in hot weather. One reason not to point the inlet and outlet down on the mechanical fuel pump is it would make it more difficult and maybe impossible to get rid of vapour, vapour likes to stay at high points in a system. Placing the electric boost pump in a cool location close to the tank would be ideal, not in the engine bay for heat soak reasons.
  8. Some people don't like the expensive orange stuff that goes on the outside of fuel and oil lines😂
  9. Routing the fuel lines below the cylinders will only exacerbate any vapour lock. Think about what happens when you go to depart, engine starts, top of cowl fills with cool air, vapour exits via the orifice or enters the carburetors and exits the vent line. Remember cool air enters the top of cowl and hot air exits the bottom.
  10. The accident aircraft was found on a track that would have taken it just north of the Canberra control zone. A plan to fly down the valley from Mt Beauty to Albury and then roughly follow the Hume to Wollongong would be prudent even in fine weather conditions. This would add only 20mins flight time.
  11. Will the GPS antenna(s) be covered with tin foil before the start and checked if the aircraft returns, sounds like fun😂.
  12. A simple VFR NOT RECOMMENDED might help. In 2022 this could be displayed in a map format. Always fly with margin, we fly for fun, there is always tomorrow.
  13. For anyone lusting after a turbo diesel kit plane engine the Mitsubishi Triton engine, 4N15, in service since 2015 would be a good choice. All aluminium block and head. 430nm@2500rpm = 150hp. 2500 is perfect propeller speed. It weighs 163kg so maybe 185kg installed with cooling. For comparison the most bullet proof aircraft piston engine on the planet (lyc o-320) weighs 121kg and also produces 150hp@2500rpm.
  14. Another electric aircraft the Eviation Alice is set to make its first flight any day now... https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-08-16/eviations-alice-electric-aircraft-still-track-first-test-flight-summer Why they came up with such a bonkers initial configuration is intriguing. This aircraft is similar to a Beechcraft King Air 350 in MTOW and passenger numbers (10). It has a 3700kg battery and similar engine/motor wieght as the turbine King Air. Carbon fiber is good, is it that good? We shall wait and see.
  15. Not seeing any big wind Saturday night on windy. We do have an excellent offer of accommodation Saturday night. Worst case the RV is already in the maintenance hangar for it's annual next week.
  16. I think it is a bit of a stretch to say the North American p51 mustang is a British design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_H._Kindelberger
  17. It is easy to lean for maximum rpm and therefore power with a fixed pitch propeller. With a constant speed hydraulic control propeller how would the pilot know when it is producing maximum power? I don't think I was ever taught this.
  18. Unless it has recently been subdivided sixmaps says you are right or the 47ha in the ad is a typo. https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/
  19. Would have been only 5 million last year the way rural property prices have gone. I like how close the fences are to the runway, those rudder pedals are not foot rests.
  20. The data in that graph is flawed. There is currently only about 1500 amateur built aircraft on the VH register, the graph suggests there should be alot more.
  21. It is a PPR strip for a reason, not sure of the current ownership. My girlfriend now wife worked there a long time ago
  22. I was going to say my learned friend RFguy said this about the forecast a week out from Old Station. The weather for that over two states turned out perfect.
