  1. This is the report from the recent forced landing in Queensland. The pilot did an excellent job, just unlucky to nose over. He also probably wrote an excellent report however it has obviously gone through the office rewrite for reasons unknown and some of the context and timing of events may have been lost. The reason for the engine failure according to the grape vine doesn't gel with the report as it stands. Will there be a follow up with actual reason for the engine failure, not likely based on history. The report: 13/6/2022MelawondiQLDJabiruUL450Jabiru2200STATUS: Under review OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft departed Gympie AFLD ab... STATUS: Under review OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft departed Gympie AFLD about 10 minutes before intending to track to Warwick to refuel before continuing to home location in NSW. Just trimmed for cruise at 2500' to assess nav settings and level. The pilot noticed a slight drop in altitude and thought the throttle might be loose. It was not loose, no response. All Ts and Ps looked ok. Then the prop stopped. A restart was attempted but the starter did not budge. The stopped prop was indicating an engine seizure. The pilot contacted another aircraft on 121.5 passed on their information and situation. They indicated they had ADS-B out for further accuracy as they were too busy looking for set down field to take eyes off the airspeed indicator and terrain. Set best glide speed. The pilot saw an airstrip below, but surrounding trees and orientation looked more risky than surrounding paddocks. An adjacent paddock was clear and attainable but on finals the pilot noticed it appeared to full of livestock, so they turned for paddock beside nearby house noting fences across landing path. Committed below 200' AGL had to avoid fences. 1 notch of flaps on base turn at 100'. Full flap near last fence with enough energy for slight clearance over fence. The aircraft immediately drop onto mainwheels on the downhill slope. Soft ground pulled up the landing roll to less than 35 metres. Nosewheel settled and dug into the soft ground tipping the aircraft onto its nose. It almost balanced there and stopped, then fell onto its roof. The only minor injury to the pilot at that point was a bump on the head on the Perspex skylight above (now below). The pilot lowered themselves onto roof inverted as seat belt undone and opened undamaged door to egress.
  2. A mark 3 with the big 18hp Fuji robin engine, same as my first aircraft, learned to fly in it. Good performance and lots of fun on a calm evening. I think it cost about $3200 new and came in a box about the size of two coffins joined end to end.
  3. Will the blades on the 4 be the same as a 3 for the 912, just with less pitch?
  4. Ok I think that someone is me. One of my gripes about RAAus accident and incident is they often appear to be rewritten by someone with zero aviation knowledge. When I flew to the Parkes Flyin for fun April 2 in the RV I spoke with a senior RAAus person about this. They said the reports are not rewritten. I said well that is a concern and left it at that.
  5. RAAus aircraft 45knot or less stall in landing configuration. So approach speed would be 45 x 1.3 = 60 knots. Anyone forcing a jabiru onto the runway at 70 should google "aircraft wheelbarrow". Good way to have a runway excursion.
  6. Hopefully all will be spelled out in the RAAus accident and incident report in enough detail that other operators can learn from it. We will wait and see. I have spoken to the tech person about lack of follow up on serious occurrences. They say they cannot compel operators to give details. I don't think keeping quiet or sweeping it under the rug helps anyone. Here is serious incident that happened 3 months ago. Was it caused by a human factor, a mechanical issue that could be reoccurring or something so rare it can be discounted? I am sure owners and operators would benefit from some basic details. 26/3/2022 Whitemore TAS Jabiru J160C Jabriu Gen 4 STATUS: Under review EXTRACT FROM REPORT SUBMISSION: An instructor and student were undertaking ... STATUS: Under review EXTRACT FROM REPORT SUBMISSION: An instructor and student were undertaking flight training in the Training Area adjacent to the Launceston CTZ. On climb at approx. 3500ft the instructor observed an indication of no oil pressure. The instructor immediately reduced engine revolutions and the engine then stopped. No abnormal sounds or other abnormal indications were present. A successful forced landing was carried out on a disused airstrip at Whitemore.
  7. The medical standard that RAAus currently have is not available to Australian RPL or PPL CASA license holders at this time. CASA Consultation on this area has just closed, evidence supports CASA license holders in private ops having the same standard.
  8. I think you forgot about the SR71a. U2 wasn't meant to be fast.
  9. RAAus "the inventor of self declared medicals" put in a submission 🤔 CASA Medical Consultation Last Friday RAAus made a submission to the CASA Aviation Medical Policy Review consultation. RAAus welcomes CASA’s review of this oft maligned regulation and looks forward to CASA’s review of all consultation feedback, with a focus on addressing risk, learning from the successful practises that have been used by Sport Aviation Bodies for many years including the use of AUSTROADS medical standards, and addressing their own administrative issues associated with Aviation Medicals. See here for a copy of the RAAus response. As a PPL holder for recreational purposes and RAAus member I found their responses a little disappointing. Would they be protecting their turf? If PPL's get self declared medicals at the same standard it would hurt their business model. Bring on the level playing field.
  10. You were just behind RFguy and Thruster88 leaning against the post at 7.25 watching the tractors. We will have to catch up in '24.
  11. Pilot had 30 years of incident free flying, knows what is important. "I had to keep my eye on the airspeed, because one of the biggest dangers in doing an unexpected landing like this is you stall it in a turn and … it's a much more serious accident than just landing fast in rough ground."
  12. Not sure if vent line is the correct term however if the carb bowl over fills for any reason fuel will exit via these. My incident was caused by having to idle the 582 low due no brakes on a bitumen taxi way. Carbs get shaken up.
  13. Unfortunately the carburetor vent lines are not done correctly on many aircraft with bing carbs. On one occasion a lot of fuel suddenly came for the carb area and hit the windscreen on my thruster during taxi, if it had been a cowl engine I would have been completely unaware. Most likely caused by a suck float valve.
  14. Looks like a coaxial helicopter with an eight blade propeller from the red herring company at the rear.
  15. The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated said GA. A few fun facts. RAAus registered aircraft numbers have been in a slight decline over the last three years, currently at 3290. None of these require LAME maintenance. VH register continues to grow, ok some of these are RPT aircraft the rest from Kingairs to cessna 150s and helicopters are all GA. Prices of nearly all GA piston aircraft are crazy high at the moment, people want them. They all require an annual inspection. At my local airport the GA flight school, the GA ag operator and the GA maintenance were I work are all going great. I love a good fact.
  16. If the Creed family sold their property would the new owners be obliged to continue to host The old station flyin? Be very nice if they did but completely understandable if they had other plans.
  17. Right now any RAAus pilot can go and get an RPL and fly that C152. It will take the same time as getting a group G endorsement if they are competent. The only difference is they would need a medical. It is going to be impossible to justify a Cessna 152 under RAAus can be flown without a medical while one under CASA still requires a medical. I see self declared medicals for private RPL and PPL pilots coming soon.
  18. Cheap fun flying is still with us https://www.facebook.com/groups/1611498805859763/?ref=share
  19. Matt's answer to the AOPA question, does RAAus support the push for self declared medicals for VH private pilots was interesting. He could have said, we absolutely support that. Instead he gave an answer any politician would be proud of.
  20. In flight fires in certified aircraft like the C182 are extremely rare, just do a search in the ATSB site. In a crash situation I cannot recall a single incident were a fire extinguisher would have made a difference. Not having a fire extinguisher may focus the mind on important things like not stall/spinning the aircraft.
  21. Two instructor pilots in the Musketeer, I guess not all pilots get it.
  22. That is a normal start for a fuel injected lycoming. The engine is primed to a slightly over rich mixture, mixture control then placed in cut off, crank engine until it fires, advance mixture control. Works every time, always some black smoke. A typical Van's RV would match the Aztecs cruise speed on 1/3 the fuel flow.
  23. I don't believe you would be able to maintain it yourself because it is not essentially the same as your build. Multi engine, retractable gear, hydraulic system etc. Ask the regulator some questions, I am sure you won't get a definitive answer. 🤔
  24. Had a great time at Old Station with RFguy. Well worth the 1200nm. Something for everyone including a very nice Musketeer sport. Was nice to meet Jack C. It is a beautiful spot in the bush. A country show with aircraft as a bonus.
