  1. With the passing of legend pilot Ben Buckley recently who had a few interactions with casa over his many years of flying I just thought I would post this video for anyone not familiar. His epic flight to NZ is at the end.
  2. Another good article by Paul Bertorellie. It is about the FAA but there may be many similarities with CASA. Who would want to be the CEO? https://www.avweb.com/insider/faa-admin-who-would-want-this-gig/?MailingID=838&utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Candy+Bomber+Gail+Halvorsen+Dead+At+101%2C+Joby+eVTOL+Involved+In+Testing+Accident&utm_campaign=Candy+Bomber+Gail+Halvorsen+Dead+At+101%2C+Joby+eVTOL+Involved+In+Testing+Accident+-+Friday%2C+February+18%2C+2022
  3. There will be if the pilot is not the trusting type and removes the "radiator" cap to double check that the system is full. Recovery bottle should be positioned below the pressure cap.
  4. I would like to see those letters before forming an opinion. Is she an aviation person? Without any experience it would be very difficult to know what the real story is.
  5. We need to wear something that makes us not stall the aircraft or fly in cloud if we are VFR only pilots. That will reduce the fire hazard by about 95% based on years of ATSB and other accident investigations. Simples.
  6. Very hard to know what is actually happening in each case without the details from an independent source. We hear the same type of complaints of harassment from truck drivers and operators. The people who operate trucks or aircraft within the rules seem to have no problems. Aircraft owner and former truck driver.
  7. Thanks Red, love the three Musketeers in formation.
  8. ATSB and CASA are separate organisations. Anyway the report was complete enough 15/80 one one cylinder and 55/80 on another.
  9. The jabiru climb speed may also be about keeping the engine cool. Here is an example of how the back of the drag curve slow approach can go wrong. Lot of risk for no reward.
  10. Usually yes, best climb and best glide will be same or very close.
  11. Depending on the room available fire sleeve (the expensive orange stuff😂) could work. Either clamp it loosely so the shaft slides through or scrunch it up so it can extend. It is quite flexible.
  12. From the RAAus accident and incident section 6/2/2022 Shepparton Airfield VIC Arion Lightning Jabiru 3300A STATUS: Under review EXTRACT FROM REPORT SUBMISSION: At take-off, partial power loss was experie... STATUS: Under review EXTRACT FROM REPORT SUBMISSION: At take-off, partial power loss was experienced and resulting in a loss of control with a left wing drop/stall. The aircraft left wing tip and nose collided with ground My observations, Pilot error almost never happens to RAAus pilots. It is the good old "gust of wind" or some mechanical issue that causes the broken aircraft. The report writer in head office suger coats everything. I guess they don't want to alarm the member$. I don't think this helps anyone.
  13. If you enter cloud without an Artificial Horizon the only thing that will work is remove hands and feet from controls and close throttle. The most disliked persons in aviation has shown how aircraft fly perfectly with no pilot input. The compass will not save you.
  14. I think we can all agree the airport is not a factor in this incident. RAAus pilots, are you being taught takeoff safety speed or "run along with the nosewheel in the air and the aircraft will lift off when it is ready"
  15. Shepperton is a CTAF and each pilot is free to make their own decisions as to which runway they use for takeoff or landing.
  16. Samsung tab s3 since 2017 nil over heating in low wing aircraft.
  17. Just about the only rule that matters in simple day VFR recreational flying is dont stall the xxxxing aircraft.
  18. I built a 1/4 scale R/C Jungmeister from plans. It spun to the ground on about the fourth flight, moved onto ultralights after that heart break.
  19. I see you having a dig at expensive certified aircraft parts however if you search the ATSB data base for in flight engine fires you will see that they are very rare in Australia compared to RAAus types by a huge margin. AN fittings, steel braid oil and fuel lines, fire sleeves, proper fuel drain lines on components that could leak if a fault develops, robust correctly designed electrical systems all cost money. I think it is cheap. Carburetor over flow lines should be routed out of the cowl at least.
  20. This performance charts shows how increasing altitude affects, propeller rpm required for a given % of power, range at a given power setting, true airspeed, fuel flow required for a given power setting. This aircraft runs about half the rpm of the geared 912 but the % changes would be very similar because they fly in the same air. Fixed pitch prop. There is a slight gain in efficiency and maximum range with altitude. Speed has the greatest effect.
  21. There are 16005 VH registrations today out of 17576 combinations. You can only reserve a mark for one year so we must be getting about 1488 new aircraft in the next year, cool. Unprecedented but cool.
  22. They could just reuse the one's that will never fly again. Maybe offer a bounty for owners who relinquish. $1000 should be enough 😂 As for aircraft migrating from VH to RAAus I don't think that will be many. Reforms for private VH pilot medicals could be coming. It will be hard to justify the double standard otherwise.
