Beautiful day for flying around casino today. Lots of students and others about. Glorious sunny day with light winds for my flight to tenterfield.

 

Just heard on grapevine that council looking to charge $28 landing fee at tenterfield bumpy ole grass strip!! Though just how they are going to collect that remains a mystery. Exorbitant fee hike from zero.

Kilcoy Breakfast.

 

Bigger, Better and much appreciated, some 30 planes attended, great effort by the club and family supporters, good to catch up with local flyers with a large assortment of Top Aircraft.

 

PS. Good to see Mark Kyle flew his Girlfriend Straight Home today, in perfect conditions of course.

Snuck in a good 2 1/2 hours at YWOL on Sat. Raining on the way down from Sydney but dry about 5km from the airport

 

Nobody else around -

 

so I checked the weather forecast again...

 

Nope all good so I rigged it and went flying

 

Hands off smooth as silk!

Had a nice flight today at Murray Bridge in the school Jab 170.My grandson Max resting out of the sun under the wing of a Cub.

Flew from Caboolture to Maryborough on friday. Was a slow trip on the way up was 1 hr 27 mins and the way back was 1 hr 11 mins. Very rough on the way back lots of thermals. I don't usually fly in those rough conditions but was prepared for it as I knew it would be like that due to the wind and the heat predicted.

Flew that way myself last week Kyle, South Grafton through to Emu Park Thursday week before last and returning last Monday. Magic conditions both days. On the way up South Grafton-Casino-along the 6500ft lane back of goldcoast over Hecksfield, across to North Straddy, Morton Bribie and stopping Caloundra for refuel. Caloundra-Bundy-Gladstone-Emu Park about 4:30 from memory. Last section was a bit too long so on the way back we landed for fuel at Bundy and Lismore which made the legs more bearable. Only 3.5hrs airtime on the way home as we averaged 125kts

A few photos from yesterday's flight back from Olga Downs Station ( N of Richmond Qld) to Townsville via a stop at Charters Towers for a fuel top up.

 

Prob could have made Townsville non-stop, but getting too old to sweat fuel these days !......

 

WX trough through the area so varying groundspeeds from 90+ knots down to 65 kts in places. Short run from the Towers to Townsville the worst with turb conditions and bad hazy viz as approaching the coast. Country east of departure is all basalt ridge (lava flows) country with wide flat valleys in between..........good run overall at around 6000'. Dep Olga at 7 am and landed Charters Towers at 9.30m..with aircraft 95% loaded.....traveled to Olga Downs with the crew going to the Kimberlies, then spent three days doing Annuals on the two hard working Drifters based there, took them for a late arvo fly but removed the loaded shotgun from the pod first !....left the box of shells and the toolbox in for balance though......the black areas at the edges of the flat plateaus are not trees but sharp black basalt rock- ex lava.........Maj...

Some more photos.......some while looking over the country in the owners very nice 64 model C182 which was purchased new by his father who was an ex WW2 Halifax pilot............flew the cook one day in the Lightwing, she couldn't get in quick enough, and now wants to learn to fly !....we had a lovely early morning flight in smooth clear air............Maj.....

Last Saturdays flight ( cut and paste from my FB status to share with you guys n gals)

 

woke up full of excitement!!!

 

it was the crack of dawn and the air was still,the ground was laiden with ice from the frosty -3 degree morning,and all the cars resembled igloo's frozen in the pack ice....the hangar doors were flung open revealling all that is the glory of my war horse(nieuport 11 c.1. )I tempted her out and began to swing her prop! hmm might be a tad cold? I start to swing harder and more furiosly,then like a crack of a whip she let out a roar and sat there pacing on the spot ready for action,I gave her one last look over then I mounted my trusty steed..We now molded into one following each others every move,I danced on the the rudder bar as she wiggled in an anticipation,we lined up ,opened up and with a buck she was in the air,the ice filled air burning my face and freezing the grin to a permanant fixture upon my face...I yanked her around and we headed across the western front dodging flak and scanning like a carnival clown for the infermous Fokker tripe... we were just about to cross the trenches(Peake oval) when I caught view of a flash followed by a strangling feeling? I griped the joystick between my legs and began a stuggle with the serpent upon its prey,(My scarf had unravelled and dangled 7 foot behind me in the wind strandlling me!)lol after a brief struggle I regained the upper hand and continued my mission,as predicted Pa was out of the trenches leading the front line in a galliant effort to combat the ice cold morning whilst giving me a huge wave,Although from my vantage point I saw him give me the wave of incoming fokkers .Im certain I seen him reference at least 6 and as I was on a lone dawn patrol I turned my trusty steed 180 , gave Pa a wing waggle and high tailed it back to the safety of french frontline aerodrome.. During the sramble home I encounted a fokker but managed to out run him plus the ground artillary forced him to retreat..I lined up the open field and pulled on the reins,She bucked and kicked but I kept her in line all the way to my most gentle 3 POINT EVER,,,WHAT!!!!!!!! Know one there to see that landing!!!!!! dang. well I de-saddled and brushed her down and was mighty chuffed at surviving another dawn patrol.....yep Im living the dream.

Yeah...just as well you don't fly a trike....you might have found yourself with a severe backwards acceleration problem with that scarf

Well the son and i jumped out of bed for a practice nav...

 

Port Macquarie to scone to maitland to Gloucester up the laneway and back to port

 

Beautiful morning awesome weather and we had great fun and experience....

 

Got to maitland and got upped by a parachute plane just NW of maitland who subsequently got upped by a local telling them they dont own the air space...

 

Then coming up the laneway encountered a flock of gliders and tow planes a Gloucester ....which was a bit exciting for a few minutes given no one could be raised on any radio channels.....

 

But all in all had an awesome flight and absolutely loved taking my son on our first long trip together....

 

The little alpi performed like a gem as usual and we where back in a little under 3 hours .... a great days flying over the mines of the hunter valley....

considering the weather today I suspect the laneway was pretty smooth....just remember it aint always so! some of the mechanical turbulence in the valleys can be a bit rough at times, Just ask Ian, I seem to remember many years ago he flew his CT up the laneway to a flyin at Camden Haven and remarking how rough it was!

Finally saddled up to give the daughters boyfriend his first lightplane ride in the Lightwing. He is pretty mechanically inept having grown up fatherless, and I didn't know how he may handle a bit of real action.

 

All went well however with the standard passenger brief and nice smooth air to relax him throughout the flight as I explained the joys and challenges of flying.

 

All ended much better than expected and we ended the flight with one touch and go and two low passes down the disused. WW2 runway scattering wildlife in all directions...he'll be back and he certainly has what it takes to be a pilot in my opinion...........Maj....

Had a little get together with a few like minded individuals at YQDI today for a BBQ lunch. Wore out my copilot she fell asleep on our way home (we took half an hour to do the 3nm trip:wink: taking the scenic route. (Ok past the werris creek coal mine shouldn't get called the scenic route lol.)

My copilot manages to sleep on every long trip, regardless of the beauty of the scenery or the sheer joy of being aloft.
