Australian Plain English MET?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Has anyone had success using this on-line tool?

http://www.recreationalflying.com/resources/weather-inc-plain-english-converter.12/

When I paste in what I think is the correct briefing information from the NAIPS Internet Service all I get is a blank page with the heading;-

"Disclaimer: These translations are not endorsed by Airservices, BOM or CASA."

This is happening in Firefox 42.0 and Chrome 46.0.

What am I doing wrong/missing??

Doesn't work for me either (that's in Safari). But then, I never contemplated a "plain english" decode before as I'm so used to decoding it in my head at a glance!

What are you having trouble with as far as the briefing info goes?

Just tried it with the iPad and it worked for me.

In regards to your question Dutchy as to what my trouble is with the forecasts (I know it was worded more as a q for ungrounded). I fly fairly regularly for a rec pilot but only login to naips if I am doing a trip or planning a trip, it is rare for me to look at a forecast for a local flight, if flying late i will check on last light times but generally for local stuff it is the old lick the finger for wind and use the eyes to see what's happening trick. So deciphering the forecasts doesn't always come easily, yes I can work out the wind directions and strengths easily as they are fairly self explanatory but working out Utc time in relation to my clock time takes a bit more thinking and then the place names can take a bit of time to work out especially if it is for a trip and not in my area. It is so much better to have the plain English version where it is all in language that I use everyday and has less chance, for me anyway, of stuffing it up and getting myself into trouble over a simple deciphering slip up.

I do understand that the pros appreciate the shortened version but I would like to see a plain English version option straight from the source rather than having to rely on converters or worse myself:happy dance:

It is so much better to have the plain English version where it is all in language that I use everyday and has less chance, for me anyway, of stuffing it up and getting myself into trouble over a simple deciphering slip up.I do understand that the pros appreciate the shortened version but I would like to see a plain English version option straight from the source rather than having to rely on converters or worse myself:happy dance:

Yeah don't worry. Those of us who have been deciphering it our whole lives still manage to stuff it up occasionally! Fortunately when you're in a fully IFR auto-land capable jet and use sensible fuel ordering principles, the occasional weather decode stuff-up is generally well mitigated with little consequence!

Thanks DrZoos! (losing track of the Avatar Zoos! But like them all!)

My problem was that I was not using the whole ***AREA*** briefing but rather the location briefing for the location of interest. Area works. Location does not.

As for what parts of the short format forecast that I don't understand? Nearly all of it!! I'm only just starting to look at this topic. I hope to use the translator as a teaching aid.

I'm in agreement with SDQDI, it's high time AirServices (if it's their brief) provided an "official" plain English translation alongside the existing format. That way less occasional reading "stuff-ups" would happen and the skies would be just that little bit safer. But others will likely disagree and tell me why.

This problem has been around for 50 years. Nev

50 years ago the original short format probably made perfect sense. In that bygone era Teletype machines would have been on the ascendancy and the "state of communications art". I was just a little too young to notice at the time but I'm guessing that Morse Code would still have still been common enough in the military via HF wireless. And back then the number of computers capable of running software to automatically translate the forecast into a "common-man" plain English format would probably have been numbered on one hand. None of which is true today.

Given the constraints of that time period I guess if I'd been asked to transfer all that forecast information via a telegraph straight key then it would have been very similarly abbreviated! 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

Today the format smacks of a legacy system that is long past it's due date for a major overhaul. The only reason I can think of for keeping it off hand is that non-English speaking pilots are probably trained to read the format with equal facility. And that it's likely standardised around the World. But neither of these reasons would seem to preclude having an "official" computer generated plain English translation, which would seem to offer an increase in safety.

In short. I think someone is dragging the chain on this one.

How big is the printer in commercial airlines that receives the "code" and prints out the latest weather info for pilots?

Surely it's just as easy to learn what the MET products mean then trying to upgrade all the systems to display a greater amount of text.

It's an international standard so hard to change. English is the standard language but some people only achieve a poor standard with it. The symbols are not pure english. Back then you got a personal briefing and weather outlook printout from qualified people. If a special flight you ordered the forecast in advance . That and your NOTAMS formed a significant briefing but you carried a hard copy with you. In some ways it was a superior service, as I see it. Most pilots are concerned with operational requirements due weather. (Holding and alternate ) and the periods applying relating to fuel carried and duty time limitations. Nev

I enjoyed the challenge of deciphering the weather. The BOM site has a "knowledge center" to help. If you look at the aviation weather as often as possible and decode it with a PCA chart handy it only takes a few weeks to master it. It's not that hard! It's part of the language of aviation.

Totally agree it is a part of the art of flying safely. But at 0400 when I am trying to decide wheather to get out of bed and head to the airport for a morning flight to Murgon for breakky, I would love someone to translate it for me. I must admit though I am quickly learning what all those abbreviated locations in my area are so it gets easier to interperet every time.

Hi All,Has anyone had success using this on-line tool?

http://www.recreationalflying.com/resources/weather-inc-plain-english-converter.12/

When I paste in what I think is the correct briefing information from the NAIPS Internet Service all I get is a blank page with the heading;-

"Disclaimer: These translations are not endorsed by Airservices, BOM or CASA."

This is happening in Firefox 42.0 and Chrome 46.0.

What am I doing wrong/missing??

works for me in chrome, not with firefox.

It always pains me that NAIPs gives abbreviated locations and I can ever seem to find my PCA chart, but if you scan down the locations and notams, most of the abbreviations used will be there with the name in full. It seems silly that in the weather dept. they use the abbreviations, but for notams they give both abbreviation and full name.

We just request the latest METAR which is usually updated every 30 mins for enroute alternates or airports you can use as a divert incase of an emergency as well as the DATIS when in the air to build SA (situational awareness), you plan your fuel & alternates on the TAF during flight planning.

As far as area forecasts go the airlines don't use them.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

If you just want METARs & TAFs then there are a number of free apps for iphone & Android devices that give you the latest in a couple of seconds with data enabled or WiFi. I use Avia for Android (it has the best ratings) & have a number of aerodromes set up. You can search for aerodromes by their name, ICAO or IATA codes. You can toggle between plain english or original code & have either as the default. Simple to use & excellent info almost instantly.

Thanks for that KGW , but if I follow the suggested steps in the Resource section for the Plain English Converter for eg. Area Briefing , I seem to get nowhere . I must be overlooking something simple ...... Bob 031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

I tried the Pemet conversion process just now & it worked fine for me using a windows desktop computer & chrome browser. I only selected one area. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Maybe the ctrl keys on the ipad are different.

In windows:-

Ctrl A selects the entire area forecast you have just got on screen from NAIPS.

Ctrl C Copies what you have selected.

Then once copied click on the box in the resources screen & Ctrl V which Pastes what you selected & copied.

Finally just click the translate button.

Works for me every time.

Thanks once again KGW, it's probably just an IPad thing . It has no ctrl A or C . Although have heard some say it works . I'll work it out somehow ..... Bob
