What aircraft?

Just drinking a rather cheeky shiraz and reminiscing about all the aircraft I have flown in or piloted. It occurred to me that amongst the members of this forum there must be some pretty interesting aircraft experiences. Tell us what you have flown in or piloted. Here is my list (as far as I can remember through my shiraz haze). Perhaps the most interesting aircraft list will win the remains of my bottle of shiraz (best get in quickly whilst it lasts)

Fishing expedition, same as you do to me when I write something from memory.

ah Turbs, just sharing my personal experiences here, not trying to present a scientific theory 072_teacher.gif.7912536ad0b89695f6408008328df571.gif happy to see your list 080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif001_smile.gif.2cb759f06c4678ed4757932a99c02fa0.gif

I have flown or flown in probably around 80 different aircraft many of which you guys have flown in so when I have time (busy today) I will pick out, if I can remember, some aircraft that you may not of ever seen or indeed heard of. That's the advantage of being an Old but not Bold Pilot.violin.gif.c5b75ad61908a9873d5843b614c5c79e.gif

I have flown some of the above as PIC, plus Fairchild, Argus, RV4, Lightwing, Skyfox and Corby Starlet, also one of the Jodels, can't remember which. Plus Kookaburra No 1 glider and several other types and a 7TU parachute.

My list is refreshingly short (ok maybe only refreshing for those who like short posts:crying:)

J3 cub All my original training up to Raa cert excepting navs was done in this beautiful old girl.

SportsStar Did my Nav training in this one as it was a tad quicker across the ground also it gave me my NW endo

Hornet STOL I guess doing my original training in a cub I was bound to end up in a properly configured plane:whistling:

That is all I have flown, I have ridden in a few helicopters, actually I did a few hours with an American pilot counting cows that were on agistment up near Burke in a flood and then in a bigger chopper dropping hay to them, that was enjoyable:thumb up:

If I made a complete list I'd get some people into trouble. I've also got mates who would make my list look insignificant, and it's not ME.. I'm also very fortunate to have been allowed/required to do some things a Bit unusual, that would never be done today. The best days in Aviation are long gone and will never be available again. You fella's should appreciate what you have though, because as disappointing as the trend is, It's far ahead of what it was in the 50's when I started, when everything had to be VH and certified, eg Druin Turbulent and such. I really regret not taking more pictures of everything though. The vids some of you people have can stay with you forever . Nev

Not meant to be a competition, just interested in unusual aircraft some of my aviation friends have flown or flown in.

Couldn't agree more, during every single flight, at some point I think to myself, this is ****** awesome and I can't believe that I am able to do this. At some point though I will let flying go and that is just a reality but I will still enjoy reminiscing about the relatively small number of aircraft I have piloted and the interesting aircraft I have been a passenger in. My own list is relatively short compared to some but lots of great memories. I have really enjoyed reading these lists, did have to look up some aircraft though.

Unfortunately the only picture I have of my first solo is a blurry picture of me standing in front of the aircraft, these days I video absolutely every part of every flight. I sometimes imagine myself in an old folks home, watching my videos and saying to the staff "I used to fly a plane you know" 080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

The people who get to fly a variety of interesting aeroplanes are the ones who find themselves in the right place at the right time. (read: hand around airports a lot!) The more types you fly, the more you realise the handling between types doesn't vary greatly, it's more about understanding the systems and operating procedures.

All reasonable 3 axis aeroplanes fly much the same. Ignore the "feel", make it do what it has to do. Power to weight, makes it move and climb and accelerate. Heavy has inertia takes time to change what it's doing. High wing loading means you come in faster, unless you put complex flap systems on it, where you have a myriad of safe speeds, which are mass dependent as well as configuration sensitive. A low wing loading is slow and gust sensitive etc. A few simple rules and a lot of figures and you cover them all. If the thing weighs 100's of tonnes, still fly the cockpit and the rest follows, but you have SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures) to guide you , probably $25,000 at least of conversion cost, on top of your ATPL. The company's reputation and hundreds of peoples lives, Your own self respect and your job to keep so (hopefully) you don't behave like a clown, and make the company regret they hired you. Nev
