danny_galaga Posted September 13, 2024 Author Posted September 13, 2024 (edited) So the 'club' racer is a slightly reworked plan of the 1940's KK Phantom . I will pick up a plan from them this Sunday. It will be ages before I build it, but in my spare time I can get a kit of parts ready. I'll make patterns for the main parts as I'm pretty sure I'll build at least 2. The first is the homage to Dad and 12 yo me, and will be quite standard. Once I've done some flying with that one I'll know how to finesse the next one. The one in the photo I think has something like an ED 2.49 or similar diesel. They are quite potent and like full size diesels have a better duration so great for team racer or similar. I'm using my original OS .15 glo which might be roughly the same power but of course will have a higher fuel burn rate. I'm going incorporate the name Cherokee as part of the homage. But not on its own. Any ideas? It can be corny because , well I'm 12 yo again ☺️ For instance Cherokee Dream or Cherokee Spirit Edited September 13, 2024 by danny_galaga 3 1
planedriver Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 (edited) So you guys are telling me that the radio gear I used to build using acorn valves from WW2 army surplus walkie talkies is now obsolete. Such is life. Better just stick with control line models Edited September 13, 2024 by planedriver

rgmwa Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 A few of us built and flew control line models enthusiastically from about the age of 14 before times moved on and we went our separate ways. Stunt and combat were the favourites. RC was in its infancy and way beyond our means anyway. The big event of the year was going to the Nats and drooling over all the ‘big stuff’. Casterton one year (the year the Beatles arrived in Melbourne), Warrnambool another time. Against all the odds one of our group never stopped building and flying control line models. I paid him a visit in 2020 and we took a couple of his models to the oval for old times sake. I hadn’t flown one since about 1968 but just like the full size ones you don’t forget how to do it. It was good fun turning back the clock all those years. Not sure what the local kids thought of two old guys going around in circles. 3
planedriver Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 (edited) Know that feeling mate, I’m in the same league. For a mad keen rock-n-roller for decades, I’d probably be OK flying anti-clockwise, but anti-clockwise I’d be stuffed and plant it ready for the usual onfield cremation ceremony 🔥🤣 Edited September 13, 2024 by planedriver 1
danny_galaga Posted September 15, 2024 Author Posted September 15, 2024 (edited) Picked up the plans for the club racer today. This is the OS 15 I got for my 12th birthday. Looks a little sorry now. But some WD-40 and an old toothbrush should make it look a little more respectable 🙂 Edited September 15, 2024 by danny_galaga 2
danny_galaga Posted Wednesday at 12:28 PM Author Posted Wednesday at 12:28 PM (edited) Look what I just won at the clubs annual dinner raffle ☺️ This kit is for carrier class. If you fly it in that class, it's 3 line control for throttle. Incidentally, I've found the quickest and easiest way to keep my photos upright here is to just screenshot it 😁 Edited Wednesday at 12:28 PM by danny_galaga 1
onetrack Posted Wednesday at 03:15 PM Posted Wednesday at 03:15 PM (edited) An AF-2S Grumman Guardian? Woo-Hoo! - now you just need the Carrier, to go with it! 😄 Edited Wednesday at 03:16 PM by onetrack 1
Litespeed Posted Wednesday at 04:15 PM Posted Wednesday at 04:15 PM Ah memories of wicked speed and sudden destruction. I had both control line and RC models from tiny speed demons- one had a screaming AMA 1 cc with 32,000 rpm and 1 HP of fury. The little bastard caught me out one day not using a chicken stick, the scary and bone dent are still very visible. Also had lots of big stuff up to 10ft span, and heaps of electric engined ones. Even built a few motors from scratch, great fun till the smoke escapes the esc. No space on a boat for such things these days.
440032 Posted Wednesday at 09:56 PM Posted Wednesday at 09:56 PM 51st year of flying control line. Aeroflyte Kittyhawk with modified engine position. 4 1
spacesailor Posted Wednesday at 11:44 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:44 PM I have always wondered why , Rotax motor's couldn't be slanted , ( as in above picture )to get a better look . That big exhaust on the side is off-putting. spacesailor
onetrack Posted Wednesday at 11:49 PM Posted Wednesday at 11:49 PM I can remember building a beautiful Kittyhawk about 65 years ago! It never flew! 😞 I could never get the engine to run! I never had any assistance in those days, living in a semi-rural area, so the Kittyhawk ended up collecting dust for decades! I can't even remember what happened to it. It probably got sold at a garage sale for a couple of dollars. That put to bed for good, all my dreams of flying aircraft! 1

Nice work rotating the motor. I've built it's brother the Spitfire, so I know it has hardwood engine bearers. I presume you left those out and fitted a radial mount to the firewall? 2
facthunter Posted yesterday at 01:31 AM Posted yesterday at 01:31 AM The Combat "DEAL" in the Late 50s was a Fox 35 in an "ALL AMERICAN" plane with reflex wing section with fully UP/Down flaps . At Lambton Oval in Newcastle with my mate, we'd go through about a gallon of shell A and Castrol R mix. About 42 in Wingspan I think and the inside wing was bigger than the Outer one. One time a couple of blokes came over and gave us a fiver as they had been betting on who would cut whose streamer all the while. Getting inverted made it challenging. Nev 3

I wanted the exhaust out underneath so model stays clean, and it does. 3 1

Litespeed Posted yesterday at 08:46 AM Posted yesterday at 08:46 AM There are lots of us who have to fly in our dreams or vicariously due to health and other issues. My wings got clipped 21 years ago, at age 34, I just "celebrated" 21 years of warfarin and the doctor finally allowed a change to a newer alternative. Hopefully I won't be a walking leaky blood bag anymore. These days I get off watching the water birds and eagles from the boat. Free entertainment and emission free as well. 2 1

Litespeed Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago It's " in Dog almighty we rust". And CFI Zoro has a fully rust proofed airframe.

Nev, The old Fox 35 Rocket. Had a few of them and bent a few with combat antics. Those were the days of many onfield cremations as a result, but we did have a lot of fun. One of my favorite models of which I built many, was George Aldriches Peacemaker. Kind regards Planey 2
danny_galaga Posted 13 hours ago Author Posted 13 hours ago A number of guys are running Fox 35s at the club 🙂
