  1. I think the Mildura problem was that there was nowhere within 100 NM to glide to with a runway long enough to get out again. kaz Renmark now upgraded to more than 1700 m would do it...perhaps Council is looking ahead?
  2. The new rules are almost certainly a reaction to the Mildura incidents. Proof again that what should apply to heavy metal does not always provide a sensible option for the little guys. A 767 short on fuel with very limited opportunities to divert is a different kettle of fish to a light single able to set down in a wide variety of circumstances. Kaz
  3. Hi Poteroo and I hope you and you family and many friends are safe and well? yes, I feel that this is another poor decision taken by those who would have us all the same despite the diversity of aircraft and operating conditions. i work on 60 minutes notional reserve because I have an antiquated float gauge on the top tank and none in the belly, and I don’t have a fuel flow instrument. personally, I start to sweat if I fly for more than 2.5 hours and begin eating into that notional 60 minutes but I suppose now I can do 3 hours and all will be well.. regards
  4. A parachutist falls at about 1000 feet per minute so jumping out at 30000’ would take 30 minutes to the ground if the chute opened straight away...and the parachutist would probably be dead from hypoxia. terminal velocity for a falling body is about 120 mph or about 180 FPS so a jumper at 30000 would theoretically time a free fall of about 80 seconds then full the cord. i just read of a Hurricane pilot who, did, just that. kaz
  5. I suppose that call is made on 126,7? kaz

  7. Thorp dale is shown on Ozrunways at S38.17.10 E146.10.00 but I can’t see any sign of a win sock on Google Earth. perhaps call the Aggie guys at Leongatha...they’ll know all the landing spots in Gippsland. kaz
  8. Its great to see a Council supporting GA by installing a gas facilit8es...most of them are pulling it out rather than replacing old equipment. kaz
  9. The “bang” when a cable breaks is an automatic motion maker when you learn with a winch launch club like I did. But so is the instinctive shove of the stick forward at the first sign of an incipient spin when you learn to thermal just a few knots over the stall at sometimes steep bank angles. Thermals are like a top - narrow at the bottom and wider as they go up - so the temptation is to do tight turns at low altitude to stay inside the rising column of air. I won’t say I didn’t do it, but I was young and bullet proof then. kaz
  10. It sure does...nose down quick and keep the aircraft flying. Low level doesn’t give time to do much...carby heat, fuel tank, mags. Best glide may not always be sufficient and more speed close to the ground is your friend but treat the relationship wisely. Speed can be traded for height to clear an obstacle or even a turn if circumstances permit. Practice the impossible turn at 3000’ and work out what height you need to land back in the opposite direction, crosswind or to complete a circuit. Add at least 100’ to it and imprint that as your decision heights for an EFATO. But you must know your aircraft and have a clear plan before you firewall the noise knob. Be prepared to wreck the machine rather than attempting to save it. Stretching the glide can be fatal. kaz
  11. Well, that’s nothing...I remember downing a long neck of Fosters when I was young. Used to get two of them in a brown paper bag as I left the pub at 6:00 pm on Friday and headed to the fish ‘n chip shop. kaz
  12. A very nice gesture from Borg Sorenson who could easily have doubled his money. I spoke to him briefly in flight as he passed by BENDIGO on the way to Nhill. Another visit to the museum is definitely on the agenda. Kaz
  13. I actually think this latest proposal, solves most problems. ATC won’t be upset, the aircraft flying in or out of the unmarked airstrip will be able to communicate with the ground or another aircraft in the circuit (within 3 NM and below 1500AGL), the transmissions won’t be heard very far away because of the low height so less interference between the many locations using 126,7. That’s pretty good! All that they need to do now is allocate discrete frequencies other than 126,6 for the many marked busy airstrips currently using it such as Yarrawonga and Renmark. Kaz
  14. I purchased an iPhone and an iPad 6 years ago. No problems with either but the iPad was stolen a week ago and I bought a new one. I tried to find my old one using find my iPhone app but the sods that took it dropped it in the Bush half way between Shepp and Mooroopna which is too far from the phone towers for an accurate fix. I found kangaroos, wallabies, brown snakes and lots of rubbish, but no IPad. Had withdrawal symptoms afte a few hours and stayed up until 2:00 in the morning reinstalling everything. Feel much better but miss all my photos because I stupidly never learned to back up to the cloud. I have now! Good thing was I locked the old one as soon as I realised it was gone. The iPad is of no use to them and they can’t use the sim either. Kaz
  15. The survey is a crock but my attempt to send a separate response was returned to me with the instruction to use the survey. If you find out please let me know. Kaz
  16. Then get onto the CASA site and answer the survey on Part 91 proposals. Recommend these provisions not apply to fuel containers of 200 litres or less. I have. Kaz
  17. I think it's the lower inertia, especially in the older RA aircraft, that slows them down quickly. I trained for my certificate in a Texan and they are definitely "slippery" and can kill you, but their inertia is low and they lose flying speed quickly if the noise stops. Kaz
  18. He might soon run into trouble... 91.630 (1) A person who fuels an aircraft contravenes this subregulation if a requirement mentioned in subregulation (2) is not met. (2) The requirements are the following: (a) at all times during the fuelling, at least 2 fire extinguishers: (i) must be on the fuelling equipment or positioned at a distance of not less than 6 m and not more than 15 m from the fuelling point; and (ii) must be readily available for use by the person; (b) each fire extinguisher: (i) must be of a type and capacity suitable for extinguishing fuel and electrical fires; 50 penalty unit offence
  19. The crux of the problem isn't the lack of home builders, or the aging pilot cohort...it's the lack of interest in things aviation amongst all but a very few kids. I remember when every kid looked up at the sound of an aircraft overhead. I remember the DC3s of TAA and ANA droning across the sky at a couple of thousand feet; the roar of the Meteor or Vampire travelling from Laverton to Sale; and (once) the sonic boom crack of a Sabre flashing past high in the sky. Aircraft are ho hum today, a bit like the coach they catch to school. They are much more interested in the new beaut gizmo they can buy online. Kaz
  20. I told a friend the other day there was no way I'd get into one of those Aerochute things...bloody dangerous. Well, the figures certainly give a lie to my bias, that's for sure. Kaz
  21. Yes, under the Australian Consumer Law you are entitled to a refund if not fit for purpose. If it is a defect then it should be covered by warranty and the only charge should be for packaging and transport. Note that the warranty implied by the ACL is invariably longer and better than that given the manufacturer. You are entitled to pursue either the supplier or the manufacturer for the remedy. Talk to Counsumer Affairs in your State if the won't play ball. Kaz
  22. Woman's lucky escape after plane crashes in paddock near Bankstown Airport
  23. There is a few advertising in the Aviation Trader. Alternatively, call the Law Institute in your State and ask for a referral. Kaz
  24. I was up at Mt Beauty today and overflew Porepunkah. Nearly got cleaned up by a biplane that landed down wind and came as close as dammit to ground looping while I was waiting to depart. Too exciting for this old girl! Kaz
