  1. You fellas who are worried about busy people having time, have you not heard the saying "if you want something done get a busy person to do it" ? From my experience dealing with people in general, busy people seem to have a way of making sure things are done whereas those with time on their hands can often be found wanting. Yes that is a broad generalisation and of course there are exceptions but just wanted to point out the flips side
  2. BRS Parachutes | FAQ This says they should be effective between 260-290 feet agl but seems to depend on forward speed. I don't remember which brand of brs it was but I recall one recommending it could be pulled on short final on a forced landing to reduce forward impact speed, it could have been pipistrel but I'm not certain.
  3. I'm not an expert on big planes so I won't enter into a discussion on the maybes or maybe nots of this particular case but I Would like to point out one thing said by Mr Bailey. "Pilots are not really trained for go arounds a after a bounce," It was my experience in my training that I did a lot more go arounds after bounces than I did low level aborted landings! Maybe that says bad things about my landings but in my case it was true. Learning in the J3 cub I got very proficient at bouncing the first attempt then with just the right amount of power recovering the balloon and greasing the second landing:whistling:
  4. I reckon the idea of having them able to be locked is a good one and certainly worth looking at seriously. If it removes the temptation it surely can't hurt.
  5. Well I went to one of those meetings and I can say that there was definitely a provision made for "no" votes, actually to roughly quote the head sharang "please vote, it doesn't matter if you vote yes or no but please vote!" imo I was greatful that they did travel around as I would not have had the priviledge to have a face to face chat otherwise and while the constitution change took up a fair slab of time I had a few other questions answered that I would not have bothered with otherwise. It is also my opinion that it is better to work together to move forward than whine about the past, (this comment is not aimed at you Ian but more at our membership as a whole) if you aren't happy with the new constitution then work on some amendments and bring them forward. Don has copped a lot of slack for leaving once the yes vote won but have a look at the amount of work he has put into it over the last few years and have a think how draining that amount of work is before criticising from the sidelines.
  6. Red if you use enough rockets (or a big enough one) you can make anything fly no matter how heavy or unaerodynamic it is, but yes I agree using that one small one was a tad optimistic. But as far as laughing at these folks goes, it is amazing just how clever some of these designs were in a time where aviation wasn't anywhere near as commonplace as it is today and I think we should really take our hats off to people like these who create truly original masterpieces. How many of us here have designed something truly different that actually flew? And by that I mean something totally unique, not a traditional plane but something totally different. IMO some of these people were geniuses.
  7. Good to see a positive thing for Camit. And yes that Aeropup is a rotax powered one. It is a beautifully built plane, we often see it here at YQDI for our flyins.
  8. The RAA won't give out our details to those who would like to get fees from us so to pay fees I would say you would have to chase it up with the airport operator. I would say a quick call and I am sure they would be happy to give you payment options. I am not an expert, I haven't paid landing fees as we are lucky at YQDI but I would guess that is how it works.
  9. Yes I did read it when I first got my certificate but I haven't perused through it since, it is a probably similar to the average driver reading up on the road rules, we do it to get our licence and then go forward on that knowledge and try to do the right thing and the next time we read them (the road rules) is when our children are getting their learner permits and are telling us we are doing things that are illegal! I haven't got kids that age yet but no doubt if they and I live long enough that is what will happen. I certainly doubt that the average driver/pilot reads through the rules and regs regularly.
  10. That looks like the frame of the XPB, it isn't Bex's maiden flight is it Farri?
  11. Put it this way: it's amazing how much ground...or sea... you can cover when you pop out of cloud at 8000ft to find yourself rather further off the beach than you had hoped. Not that anyone jumps through cloud. Or near water without flotation. Of course.... Ok cough up the story.........,..... is that how you got the name "I Bob"? Landed on the wrong side of the waterline:wink: Ok ok I will go and join phil in the corny corner.
  12. Nope I'm only 30.......... Oh wait what?
  13. That would be just as silly as bringing in a mandatory death sentence for possession. Certainly wouldn't solve the problem. For sure it may help reduce prison numbers but it definitely wouldn't improve society. While part of me thinks "if they are dumb enough to do that to themselves, just let them" another part of me has seen the damage drugs do first hand and I don't feel comfortable making them legal (except for medicinal purposes but even then only if okay end by a dr)
  14. As for what aircraft.............. Well one thing is for sure and that is the fact that we won't all agree on which one. I am renowned for not being a fan of Jab engines but I do think that a jab would fit right in the price bracket nicely. Of course a 130k limit would certainly open up an awful lot of (IMO) superior planes but that of course requires more tickets to be sold to get to the break even point. Although having said that I wonder if more people would buy tickets for a A32 vixen (as an example, many other planes could be inserted here of course) than a j230? Would it be viable to have a cash option? Maybe 60 or 70% of the planes value? For those who don't need/want the plane?
  15. Hilarious:thumb up:
  16. FWIW even if you don't end up with a tailwheel plane make sure you do a TW endorsement. I know there are a lot of cliches about tailwheel vs nose wheel pilots but it is my opinion (I am a low hours pilot!!!) that a TW endo will do absolutely no harm and will assist in supplementing a properly trained nose wheel pilot. In my limited time and even with my low hours I have still flown with nose wheel pilots who do Not use the rudder at all!! Scary really but as I said I am low hours so my advice is certainly not expert!
  17. Could it have been a base to final turn stuff up? Considering the water there.
  18. Keith it is bad enough preaching doom and gloom all the time but saying FT is a good teacher and that you have learnt off him in no way helps your credibility. Sometimes I think it would be nice to meet fellow forumites as the picture we get when just reading lines can be quite different to reality, but then other times I am happy to stay unenlightened.
  19. No fire doesn't mean no fuel (of course that is always a possibility though!) There is still a fair amount of engine noise in that video although how much power was being produced I obviously don't know.
  20. Well FWIW (not much admittedly) I think that calling for nominations nice and early is a good thing and I don't mind them jumping the gun a little to get things rolling. Personally I think more people would be unhappy if they waited months and months to dot the eyes (yes yes I mean the letter but I am grammatically lazy) and cross the Ts. As far as not letting everyone know through snail mail about the opening of nominations............ Well I am one of the ones who doesn't read the online mag (too lazy) and I miss my paper copy (too lazy to subscribe, notice a pattern?) but when it comes to looking for people to run/direct RAA if they aren't electronically capable then I don't want them at the helm. No matter what their skills are in this day and age with a membership as broad as ours I at least expect them to be able to read an email and if they aren't interested enough in RAA to read the RAA newsletter then sorry but IMO (humblish, I have to work on that still) they are not good enough to be a director. Kasper if you put half the effort you put into finding the faults into nominating for a spot and sitting on the board you could be a huge help to the whole membership but (to me anyway) the attitude that you seem to have towards RAA just comes across as argumentive without really wanting to get things better. Of course I don't know all the ins and outs of how that has come to be but it does seem to me that it would be better for all (including you) if you could soften your attitude and be a little more constructive. Anyway that's probably enough of my opinion for one day:whistling:
  21. In 99% of forced landings it won't be an issue Nobody and I agree that that method is perfect BUT if you have to do a forced landing on a busy beach for example then I think trying to dodge people would be more hazardous than flicking a switch so that they can dodge you. Obviously not the sort of thing you want to be fiddling with on a very late final but I still think it could have a place. Of course it will be AFTER the aviate step but if put in with the communicate part (the least important step!) I think it would be fine.
  22. If that is the case you could nearly manufacture one yourself. You obviously need the horn and then you could use some light weight air hose (similar to what trucks use these days for their airlines through their cabs) to pipe it back into the cab and then you could just have a gate valve style tap to a pressure bottle. You may need some form of limiter so that the discharge lasted a suitable period and not just a 2 second screech but otherwise I think that would be fine:thumb up:
  23. 50 seconds from 5000ft until touchdown that is an amazingly fast decent rate! I never really thought about it before but that did surprise me. They do glide like a brick don't they.
  24. Those air horns are extremely loud:yes: but I'm not sure how loud they would be if deployed from inside a cockpit? If there was a way to flush mount the horn part to the outer skin (preferably the floor I guess) so that the sound was all outside then they should work:thumb up: As long as it wasn't too complicated to use! because in a efato landing on a golf course or an engine out on a 500ft beach run you don't want anything taking your concentration off your flying, you want a button easy to get at and press and forget so that you don't have to fiddle around looking and as good as those air horns are you don't want to have to hold the button in for your last 100 feet. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to rig one up so that it was just a toggle switch, I guess with a bit of work you could remote mount it in the engine bay?
  25. I have a siren mounted underneath and it is very effective at moving Roos off strips:thumb up: I think they are a good idea, although in my case if I lost battery power it wouldn't work but for a simple engine out it would be fine. Having said that it is NOT lightweight.
