  1. I was in the local engineering shop today and there were a pair of Kinchrome wire strippers with a crimper incorporated for $30. Will have a look in Bunnings this week to see what they have. Thanks guys! Scotty
  2. Hi John...I am going to use one in my Pietenpol. I have the block sitting here in my garage and decided rather than bring a core engine in from the USA, I would just bring in the block and then bring in all the parts rebuilt from the USA. If you bring a complete core engine in you cant use some of the parts like the cast pistons, blower fan etc so its weight you are paying for in freight which is no use to you. The parts are cheap but the freight to get them here is the killer. I chose this engine as I can build it myself and there for, maintain it as well. Peter Johnson in Victoria built one for his Pietenpol and he had success. You can see his website at Pietenpol Pages. William Wynne is the guru with regard to aero conversions of the Corvair. You can view his site at www.FlyCorvair.com - Home of the Recognized Authority on Corvair Powered Flight There is now a 5th bearing available to help support the crank at the flange where the prop bolts too. The stock engine has had problems with the crank cracking due to the excess side pressure so the 5th bearing supports the crank right where the prop bolts on. There are a lot of these flying especially in the USA. Chevrolet made about 1 500 000 of these engines if my memory serves me correctly but not a lot of them came to Australia. In saying that, I do know of a chap that MAY be able to access one here if you go down this road. Have a look under the links section of my website at Scottys Pietenpol Air Camper Build and all the suppliers of parts in the USA are on there. If you are looking for a block get one from 1965 to 1969. These are classed as the later model blocks. The 1964 apparently can be used but you have to be more specific with the other parts used on it. The early ones are from 1960-61 to 1963. I think you can use these but not the best. I have been lucky enough to find a guy in the USA who has 5 of the old models in his shed and I have worked out what parts were common from 1961 to 1969 and he is sending them over. Things like rocker covers etc. I am no where near an expert on the Corvairs but I have done a lot of research and spoken to many people who are. If you want to know anything else, just ask. If I cant give you an answer, I should be able to point you too someone who can Scotty
  3. Thanks to everyone who has helped educate me here! Love this forum and the plethora of help given freely! I will have a look in Bunnings next time I am in there and see what they have. Old Man Emu...would love any literature you may have. I get a bit anal about wanting to know everything about a process so I can do the best job, gets me in trouble sometimes...lol! I wasnt going to buy a Nicopress tool I was just using it as an example of needing specific parts to get a good join. Your right...I will need to ask around to see if someone has one when that time comes. Im in the SAAA so someone should have one. Wont be for a while at this rate anyway! Thanks again to all Scotty
  4. Thanks Ozzie...the set I was looking at was around the $150 mark! If you say yours do the job, thats even better. Now are all crimps the same or are you better to buy crimps to suit the tool. I know there are the 3 different colours. Would I be naive thinking that all manufacturers adhere to strict sizing? I know at the Cable forum at Natfly they emphasised about Nicopresses. You need all the correct parts for the join to be right. Im wondering if these crimps are the same? Scotty
  5. Hi Ozzie...thanks for that mate. You dont have the part number by any chance? I saw two models If I recall correctly, by king chrome, and quite a price difference at my local engineering shop. Better make sure im comparing apples to apples. Scotty
  6. Hi all.....im looking ahead and trying to learn as much as I can with regard to my aircraft build. I have been reading up on the crimps for making electrical connections. I attended a forum at Natfly and learnt a lot about what to do and what not to do. I know soldering is a no no. I guess what I need to learn about is what is the acceptable standard with regard to the tooling. I have always used the cheap crimping packs you buy from places like Super Cheap Auto for my car and bike needs but now I know these are not really acceptable in an aircraft. Is there a particular brand of tool and crimp available in Australia that builders use? I have seen some crimping tools over a $100 which I have no problem paying that much but expensive is not always good. Can someone take a minute or two and educate with regard to this please? Scotty i_dunno
  7. Hi Kevin...welcome aboard! I am from Upper Hutt Originally but did my training as an Embalmer at Wairarapa Funeral Services in Masterton back in 1992. Keep the pictures coming of your build please! Scotty
  8. Good suggestions Ozzie. I cant see why it couldnt have a display of new cars, Bikes, vintage cars . I spent 4 days there and you can only look at things so many times. Would be good to split it up keeping Aviation as the main theme of course. The Burt Rutan movie they projected on the hanger wall at night was fantastic. Really inspirational for a home builder like me! It really was a fabulous event for me and my 10 year old son whos still asking can we go next year! That Airport gets utilised a lot through the year with the Museum displays so things like Telstra sponsoring a wireless internet facility could really be possible and utilised year round. Scotty
  9. It was a great weekend away. Only thing I can think of is a wireless internet network where you can buy time to use the net. Kinda like they have at Motels etc. ....and an airbed pump for Ian.... Scotty
  10. Plane driver....where did you buy that trip ticket from. I WANT to buy one for my MIL! Just make sure the window wipers were left off in the last service so there is nothing for her to hang on to! Its a classic! Scotty
  11. 30mm here in Tamworth, bring it on! We need it badly! Scotty
  12. Hi Slarti...I know this chap! He has been doing test flights over the last week I believe. Glad he and Pietenpol are unhurt. It has a Subaru engine in it. Scotty
  13. Makes me want to glue some more wood! Scotty
  14. Hi Bruce.....you say an abandoned kit? Does that mean part built by the previous owner or still new and unstarted? At Natfly I think it was Steve Bell from the RAA hosted a forum and this subject came up. Im no expert so just passing on what I heard. Apparently there have been some horror stories of people doing this in the past. Getting it here and you building or finishing it is not the problem. When comes time for final inspection you need to produce all the documents and build history of all the previous owners work. This is where it comes untidy apparently Steve was saying. There have been situations where the previous owner wont hand these documents over till further payments are received from you. Im not saying dont do it as Im no expert on this. I would call Steve at RAA if that is the way you want to go and clarify it all before you commit to bringing it over here. Maybe someone else who was at Natfly this year can jump in with anything else as I walked in halfway through this part of the talk. Good luck with it all Scotty
  15. Hi Adrian...sorry about that mate, I got the "bush" part right. I did mention I was hoping my memory was serving me correctly. Obviously wasnt when I typed it! Hope it all goes well from now on :pc strikes back: Scotty
  16. Seb...well put mate. I never have had the knack of candy coating the truth....must work on that one. Scotty
  17. Andy...there will be a lot of different people from a lot of different agency's that will need to put together very extensive reports of ALL evidence that is available. When the Coroner performs an inquest it is a very detailed and comprehensive study and ALL material available is presented allowing he or she to make an educated and informed finding. Unfortunately over the years I have had a little to do with this side of things. It can even get very ugly which is never nice. Scotty
  18. At the end of the day we all know the Press are maggots. No secret there. We cant change that as WE keep buying newspapers and watching TV. The Coroner will look at all that You Tube footage and study the crash report and will make up his or her mind as to what led to this event unfolding. Then there will be his or hers recommendations. This is where it all gets ugly so I hope the Coroner sees it for what it is and we all dont get punished. So sad for his family left behind. Scotty
  19. Hi Adrian...John Birrell who goes by the name of "Bush Pilot" if I recall on here is the man you need to talk to. He presented a fantastic seminar at Natfly on the Subaru conversion and then showed us his immaculate example which he flew there. From what he was saying the cylinders never wear out. Parts from Super Cheap Auto and the like. Apparently you need a modified cam, he also modified the distributor and used a different intake manifold on his. I think he had a radiator off an Alfa Romeo (hope my memory is serving me correctly). He has a Foxcon belt redrive fitted to the front. I was very impressed at the setup. He said he has fantastic reliability from his one. Hope this is a start anyway. Scotty
  20. Only if it wasnt insured it would be a waste...but then again....... Scotty
  21. Naemick..that second Boomerang shot is very powerful...wow love it! Scotty :kboom:
  22. Oh my god....watching that clip made me want to vomit with fear!..I hope for his family's sake it is not this fellow. Watching the other clips has astounded me. I was an Undertaker for many years and had the displeasure of putting the results of these actions back together for their families to view. Im astounded..... Thoughts are with those left behind. Scotty :yuk:
  23. Hey Tomo...dont tell anyone else but he wasnt really dead...he was just tricking.......Ive heard these days some folk pay good money to be nailed to a frame.......
  24. Dazza...politics is over rated. Scotty
  25. Darky...at Natfly there was a lady selling a complete theory book written by a chap in WA if I remember correctly. Was around the $80 mark. Cant recall who it was, maybe someone will recall. Scotty i_dunno
