  1. Many Americans knew from around 1933 that they were likely to go to War with Japan. The U.S. embargoes on Japan were introduced from 1936 on, to try and prevent further Japanese military actions, after they invaded China. What stunned the Americans was the fact that the Japanese would land such a vicious and secretive blow on them with no warning. It was pure luck that most of the U.S. Navy fleet was at sea when the Pearl Harbor attack took place. https://www.brandeis.edu/now/2020/may/winter-1933-jankowski.html https://history.state.gov/milestones/1937-1945/pearl-harbor
  2. Not a Zenith 750, but Marty might have some interest in this South Australian electric aviation hopeful. The California-based Amprius is making big noises about the technology advances in its silicon anode battery. https://showcasesa.com.au/south-australian-business-achieves-milestone-towards-producing-australias-first-light-sport-electric-aircraft/ https://amprius.com/
  3. ATSB have one eye witness who sighted the aircraft at low altitude and heading towards the ground, and no smoke or fire was mentioned by that witness.
  4. ATSB have confirmed the crash cause evidence is definitely suggesting a powerline strike upon landing. What puzzles me, it appears the crash was on the familys farm, and I would've expected the pilot to be fully familiar with the powerline locations in that area - so perhaps the cause was engine failure (carburettor icing?) on final? https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-10/atsb-initial-evidence-deadly-light-plane-crash-at-merriton/102958168
  5. The Bohli compass .... http://www.hkavionics.com/Bohli_man/ba_kompi_e4.pdf
  6. It's the Holy Trinity of Delta-wing aviation!
  7. The answer to this problem is on the Professors webpage, below. Before you read it, click on "See the question here", to get a laugh. https://www.spsnational.org/the-sps-observer/spring-summer/2016/compass-confusion-answers#:~:text=If a north hemisphere compass, the base of the compass.
  8. I'll wager Jim Knight wished he'd done more to check his compass in his Wackett VH-BEC in 1962, after he ran out of fuel and landed in the desert of Northern South Australia, and died there.
  9. Didn't realise you were actually a closet furry, Litespeed!
  10. The fursuit crowd have a thing about dressing up as animals, as in Disneyland-style costumes. They call it "cosplay" - as in "costume play". I don't know how you'd even get to fit in a cramped cockpit wearing a fursuit - let alone have concerns about "limited view" restrictions. So, I'd have to opine, the answer to the OP's question in the title is YES, and the answer to the question in post #1, is a resounding, NO. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255721304885 https://www.paddleyourownkanoo.com/2021/10/27/furries-on-a-plane-southwest-airlines-flight-taken-over-by-animal-costumes/
  11. You wouldn't have to be the sharpest tool in the shed, as a baggage handler, to slip contraband into a Q flight cargo hold, and then pull it out and deliver it to a waiting car at the edge of the tarmac! There would be so many cameras watching them at all times, they wouldn't even be able to scratch their goolies without someone knowing immediately, which side it was, that they'd scratched! Then there's the massive AFP and Border Force Intelligence, which has acquired so much info from the ANOM app - plus the ability to listen in to phone conversations almost anywhere - as well as the number of undercover operatives within the drug gangs and motorcycle gangs!
  12. These photos are all of single seaters. No photos of any of the 2-seat versions?
  13. ABC is reporting both men have now died, a father and son. Condolences to family and friends, what a terrible thing to have happen. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-09/two-men-killed-in-light-plane-crash-at-merriton/102950490
  14. Aircraft is reported by S.A. Police to have hit a powerline prior to crashing. The 24 yr old passenger is deceased, the 50 yr old pilot is in critical condition. This has been a black week for light aviation. https://www.police.sa.gov.au/sa-police-news-assets/front-page-news/plane-crash-at-merriton
  15. This is starting to sound like a Country Party whinge. I've seen very few bankrupt farmers, most got their land for next to nothing, and today, it's worth millions - and it's still going up and up endlessly, in value. I worked as a contractor for probably over a thousand farmers and they nearly all wanted their earthmoving jobs done for next to nothing. Some would even tell me the price they wanted it done for, which was usually about 20% below my break-even costs. All those farmers are now worth at least $3M-$5M, and some have their farms on the market for $20M. Not a bad little "win" if you can get it. Nobody ever gave me a single square metre of land for less than the going high-value market rate.
  16. .....pig fat is the greatest "greaser of palms" that one can wear in PNG. As a result of all the greased palms that Turbo engaged with, doors opened for him everywhere in Port Moresby - and before long he had the PM's private jet made available to him, for his own personal use (and at call), the PNG Governors Rolls Royce was his for the taking whenever he felt like it, and even better, the Parliamentary..........
  17. You'll probably need these to go with the fursuit, to be fully legal. https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1457722791/fursuit-sized-pilot-goggles
  18. Breaking News! - Tasmania - Farmer finally finds culprit responsible for destroying his outhouse with huge part that fell from plane!!
  19. .......6:00PM Channel Nine News headlines. Then were the fire reports from the Firies. Oh, the Fires!! The Fires!! There were e-Drifters on fire behind every second house, it seemed, according to the Firies. Pretty soon, new Fire legislation was initiated to forestall e-Drifters initiating massive fires. All e-Drifters had to be parked no closer than 30 metres to any flammable material, any building, any airport hangar, any..........
  20. I think you'll find the original post is Sept 16, 2023 - not 2016. Tango Delta only joined the forum on Sept 16 this year.
  21. Birds fly into my office window on a regular basis, and hit it with a BANG!, that frightens the crap out of anyone in the office. I think it's mostly doves. They fly off, little the worse for wear. They're bloody tough creatures, birds.
  22. I wouldn't be so sure it was the impossible turn. The news items state the C177RG went straight into trees off the end of the runway. The 70 yr old pilot was a skilled and passionate aviator and had owned a number of warbirds, including a P-51 and a Sea Fury. The terrain around Lake Placid airport looks rather uninviting for an emergency landing. https://www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com/news/local-news/2023/10/two-killed-in-lake-placid-airplane-crash-identified/
  23. ...., a sound that made CT sit bolt upright. He would know that sound anywhere. It was the sound of a worn-out Bluehead Rotax starter, and he knew straight away from that horrible sound, that the starter was poleing out - which sound was music to his ears. Ever since he'd started (no pun intended) his major electrical repair shop at DG International Airport (specialising in ripping off aviators for minor electrical repairs (regularly repeating the company advertising line, that went, "we can't be too safe in the skies, can we?"), CT gloated whenever he heard an electrical fault of any kind. There was no getting away from his money-grubbing grasp, there wasn't an electrical repairer with 100kms of DG International that had the skills, the parts, the servicing ability, that CT had. He'd started in the electrical business at age 5, tearing cranky Morris Minor starters apart, then telling the owners the starter was buggered (of course it was, once CT had got to it), and they were up for a new one. And of course, CT always just happened to have a new Morry Minor starter on hand. Then came the fateful day when one particular Morry Minor owner turned nasty at the news that a new Morry Minor starter was $450 from CT's shop, and this sent the Morry Minor owner into a rage, whereby CT suddenly realised that.........
  24. Hmmmm ... I believe there's people called Trade Measurement Inspectors, who randomly call on businesses that use measuring equipment in their operations, to ensure their measuring equipment is functioning properly and giving accurate readings. However, you may be right, the TMI's probably don't call on businesses often enough to do those checks. The general trend today seems to be they only act on complaints. I know the scrap metal dealers scales are often highly suspect.
  25. If you were mates with a school science teacher, you could've just zipped around to their science room and borrowed their triple beam balance scales. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_beam_balance Or ... visit a pawnbroker and ask to use their gold scales. https://www.goldfeverprospecting.com/scales.html#:~:text=Gold Scale - most accurate 2%2F1000th of a gram!&text=Gold Nugget Scale 0.01 grams HIGH Accuracy!
