After what seems like an eternity, I was back at Fly Now @ Redcliffe yesterday for a flight lesson, my last was on March 10, a 16 week hiatus due to weather, an unexpected trip home (NZ), sadly my mother had passed away and my computers graphics card being fried resulted in my flying fund to be severely depleted for some time.

 

Wayne was my Instructor for the flight, to get me back into the grove, ie: my mind was ready for flying but my muscle memory needed a jump start, we headed out to the training area to perform some back to basic maneuvers to get me backup to where I was previously, it was a beautiful day

 

After being so long away from the cockpit, I did have some concerns whether I wanted to continue to learn to fly or not, also adding in costs, lessons, insurance etc, but the flight was a absolute hoot!, did I do everything spot on?, no, I was a bit rusty, but will get there in time, but ultimately yesterday still revitalize my dream of wanting to be a pilot

Well another great day, my 3rd Nav and a big one this time and the credit card is still recovering from it.

 

2.6h total

 

Plan was YCDR-YWSG-YGYM-YHBA-YNSH-YCDR via Nambour to miss YBSU airspace

 

Everything started off nicely, YCDR to YWSG but I got diverted 1/2 way while over Woodford straight to YGYM. So a quick replan and continued on my way.

 

I flew overhead of YGYM on to YHBA - lots of fog nearYHBA so didn't know if we were going to get in or not....

 

Getting close so I check AWIS and know I will be getting 29, a 1500' fly over for 29, mid crosswind join and just as I go flaps before base and what do you know, a damn engine failure glide approach... nailed it...

 

running out of time so another re route - straight to Nambour (radio BNE centre to check R658B/A - all clear to fly over) and then back in for a downwind join on my favourite 23 at YCDR with a flapless landing (I love flapless). A great day indeed...

Had a great flight today...we call it "The great circle" Takeoff from Caboolture then over to Woorim at Bribie Island off across Moreton Bay to the west side of Moreton Island then past Tangalooma and down to North Stradbroke Island then once past the straddie airfield turn west across to Heck Field then over to Boonah. Takeoff from Boonah being aware of Amberley airspace of course then over Gatton Airpark and usually onto Watts Bridge but they had a aerobatic event there today so we bypassed and flew to Esk then Somerset Dam and back to Caboolture. My gopro stuffed up on the way over so got no video but fixed it up at Boonah so got the trip from there but peeved off not getting all the lovely stuff from over at the islands. I will put something up soon after I get it all sorted...perfect day for flying around 2 1/2 hrs flying time

They other guys today went over the east side of Moreton Island as there are a few pods of whales out there, near Cape Moreton. I'd expect them to be around for a while.

Hey, such awesome conditions today, I just had to get into the air as well. I was another one of the flyers over Morton and Stradbroke Islands with my sister as PAX. One of the best days flying I've ever had. Not many pics here, my sister was the designated photographer. 3.6 hours flying time for today.

 

Had an interesting moment today when a pilot decided to fly the wrong way along the VFR route. Lucky he was at least 500ft below us.

They other guys today went over the east side of Moreton Island as there are a few pods of whales out there, near Cape Moreton. I'd expect them to be around for a while.

There were some there, but the greater numbers we saw was near Point Lookout near the tip of North Straddie.

Tony..it certainly was an exceptional day....are you kidding me about the dude going the wrong way on the VFR route????... was it a RAA or GA?

I am not kidding, he/she passed right underneath us about midway between Woorim and Tangalooma, a blue low wing, with nose wheel undercarriage, similar to a Sportstar or Sling, heading for Woorim. Not sure whether it was RAA or GA, as you can understand it all happened rather quickly. I was sitting on 3400ft as the C class starts at 3500ft, so he/she was doing some pretty dangerous stuff by heading that way. I may be wrong, and I know that under 5000ft he/she didn't have to, but I don't even think he was keeping to a hemispheric level, that is, I think he/she was a bit higher than 2500ft. I remember that I had just made my 10nm call to Tangalooma traffic when it happened and I was monitoring that frequency. There was a bit of traffic in the area that I could hear, but not him/her.There's always one in every industry, isn't there?109_groan.gif.66f71fc85b2fabe1695703d67c904c24.gif

Crazy stuff...and pretty hard to see anyone coming front on too. The VFR route tracks are well separated too you can be a bit either side of track and still have heaps of separation

Just to play devils advocate here.

 

At 10 nm from Tangalooma as you state you had just made that call, you are actually halfway between Bribie bridge and Woorim and right over the southern part of Bribie.

 

At that point you at the juncture of 3 different frequencies, Caboolture/Caloundra 125.85, Redcliff127.15 and Tangalooma on 126.5. Most people in that area would be on the 125.85 as it is part of the eastern/southern training area for Caboolture and Caloundra. in that area I listen to 125.85 and monitor either Redcliff or Area.

 

Again most people that I know crossing the bay Bribie to Moreton and back do so at as close to 3500' as possible. In theory if the fan stops halfway across at that height in most aircraft you will have enough glide to get to one of the beaches so long as you glide with the wind behind you.

 

Even up to 3 miles out over water he may not have been crossing rather just flying local as many do head out over the water when flying around Bribie eastern beaches.

 

When I am crossing I do the following.

 

West to East I use the 125.85 from Ycab to Bribie and monitor 126.7

 

I give position and crossing calls on both 125.85 and 126.7 and a 10 mile call for Tangalooma over Bribie central.

 

I fly a 3400 and monitor Area and 126.7 and fly almost directly over the VFR Route.

 

East to West I use the 126.7whilst ever I am over the island and monitor area

 

I give position and crossing calls on both 125.85 and 126.7

 

I fly a 3400 and monitor Area and 125.85 and fly south of the VFR route from Combayuro Point towards Woorim. Once past halfway I swing North towards the VFR Route and cross the coast almost right on it.

 

I find that gives me the most options if the fan stops.

 

I do often fly around Bribie with no plan to go anywhere and sometimes pop out over the bay to check out a ship or boat or sometimes just a shadow without intending to cross.

 

One last point, below 5000' there is no requirement to even have a radio and as such we should assume that there will be someone out there without one. Best answer to that is eyes outside.

 

Not trying to justify anything here really other than that is a high traffic area and people may not be doing what you think they are doing or should be doing, but could still be well within the rules. FWIW

Yep, You are right Geoff, I may have made that call on 126.7 a bit closer to Tangalooma, I also remember making a position call over Woorim on the Area. It was a busy day. But I wasn't expecting to be seeing an aircraft flying the wrong way along the VFR route. I thought I did everything reasonable to make myself be heard and seen and be in the best position for a safe flight, that is, I was right on the route, going the right way.

Gayndah Heartland Festival, photos with Renee Event Manager at the festival markets and this morning's Sunrise Heritage Railway Breakfast. Good attendance all round. Golden Orange Motel looked after our every need especially last nights Christmas in July Dinner.

My first Solo Nav today, what an awesome experience and feeling and an amazing day for it. Perfect conditions and an amazing view. My instructor threw me a curveball, making me fly to an airfield YMUB that doesn’t have any info listed so I google earthed it so I knew what to look for..... he wanted me to take photo of it 1f603.png:D - YCDR-Kenilworth-YGYM-YMUB-YKCY-YCDR

Just returned from the Epic Wondai Winery Weekend, the photos say it all but highlight was the welcome and hospitality of the Barambah Aero Club from start to finish.

 

The winery tour and lunch at the Dusty Hill Winery was most memorable with uncle Arthur as a our bus driver. We checked into the Up & Country B&B with our hosts, Pilot - Chris and his wife Donna who made our stay very comfortable indeed.

 

We ventured back out the airfield to meet more of the gyro / flying community and enjoyed sunset drinks before we all headed off to the Wondai RSL.

 

A great night of talking everything flying was enjoyed by all, special mention must be made about about the great meals that were huge and very cheap.

 

Waking up to a crisp clear morning, we returned to the airport for the Barambah Aero Club Breakfast.

 

4 aircraft from Caboolture flew in this morning to support the club which was much appreciated, bringing visiting aircraft up 10.

 

A huge Club effort was put in by all concerned with a great sumptuous breakfast in their very comfortable club house. We sadly said our goodbyes before departing back home, in perfect weather with a 20 Kt tailwind at 5,500.

 

From all the flyers and people who drove in to this weekend, we thank the organisers from the Barambah Aero Club and Chris and Donna for a job well done. See you again
