I still don't think the airport is viable but with Wellcamp industrial park stuck in the middle of nowhere its also doomed to fail. I can only imagine what the Wagners are saying to their LNP mates.

What a mess!

Dunno why you're concerned.....you reckon no-one is going to use the airport anyway.

He did too, and his posts were so believable that he convinced the Federal Government not to waste taxpayer funds, but it looks as if now he's playing the cat on the lino, trying to swerve around before people remember he was the one who killed Wellcamp. It would have been a success with that road too.

I did see Wagner's plane fly in today, so no doubt they are working the phones.

You wonder if cooler heads in Canberra are going over the figures that Cando's team have provided for obvious signs of underpricing the build.

Last week their was a buzz [on twitter] about Macfarlane, the local deadwood member, on the nose and possibly losing his front bench seat after a reshuffle.

Still, its going to be a major blow to Wellcamp's viability if the bypass doesn't get built.

Well this is the problem with Queenslanders - they always keep you in the dark, but if you budget for three time their cost estimates it usually works out, so I still think you've jinxed it FT, could make a good headline in the next few days. "FLYING ACE BOMBS WELLCAMP"

The problem with building the bypass is the economics of it don't work.

If you are shipping a truckload of cattle from Roma to Brisbane the bypass will save you 10 minutes on a 6 hour trip.

The bypass is $1.5B to $2B project and the community has to fund the costs of maintaining 40kms of duplicated road once its maintained.

If it where in nsw we wouldnt even be dicussing it, because there could be a tree frog 100 miles to the west, a flying fox that drops by and the aircraft landing might fracture rocks hundreds of meters below the non existent ground water...plus we would have to get some gst back from some other state to pay for it.. And even then we would have to study it for forty years, pay at least five times its cost to consultants to decide it needs investigating, have five cost benefit analysis done that take so long they become useless , get an epa done then redo the cost benefit becuase the epa took so long, and insulate every home in the area, .then we might get some back hand deals done by some labour mates who could all retire on govt pensions because they did some dodgy deal with family and sold it to a mining company that they own shares in.....ah ya got to love QLD at least they get shit done...

Good day at Wellcamp Airport open day, traffic in was flowing much faster than last years open day. Slower in early afternoon for those morning visitors all leaving after lunch. Great weather, great organization, everybody seemed happy about what they saw. Wagners still have a bit of work to do yet before opening in November, taxiway seal needs finishing and taxiway lights, main concrete apron approx 1/3 laid, car parks to be finished and sealed and the entrance roads completed and sealed were the most obvious things to note. Terminal only needs gate furniture, otherwise looks finished. A lot of work still required on the airport but mostly longer term expansion work to be done over a few years I would guess.

OMG!!!.....still no carpet ! It's doomed. I didn't attend, I went flying instead, have to say, I'm not looking forward to it if it does get busy. The amount of radio traffic in a normally fairly quiet ctaf as the day's display aircraft wereleaving, was just plain annoying, probably nothing for you southerners, but it was difficult to get a call in. I've not heard a glider tug calling that he's after the B737 around here.

Can't argue with the rest of your comments, I could have enjoyed a good flying session today too, nice weather. Maybe you should have come over to do a high speed run down the strip in your stealth Drifter! 080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

Well thank god for that....it's all a goer now.... as for the high speed flypast, they got upset about some paramotors being close but legal, so I'll just stay away.

They are still spruiking: my mum was a careflight volunteer today and they roundup was that they raised $20K for the day now Wagners said they got 30,000 today but that sounds like BS considering the donations raised.

compare this photo

I took this photo at 9:50 am only 20 mins after 'Gates open". All non permit visitors parked 3km away and had to get on one of the many buses to get to the terminal/display area. So this photo does not show the numbers of people that were there around lunch time. The program was repeated in the afternoon and we took one of the buses back to the car park around 1:30pm and probably 3/4's of the morning crowd were starting to leave then, they were still filling buses with visitors for the afternoon session.

Note: the line of buses in the photo lined up to the right of the tarmac were for the runway tours only. I would think 25 to 30,000 visitors today was close to the mark.
