  1. My bloody BMW has had two radiators and is in the workshop having a coolant leak (and other things) attended to. Lovely to drive but need extra boot space to carry around the emergency maintenance money.
  2. On a slightly different note... Stuart, a farmer, has a nice little RV. Ros, his wife, wanted him to come to town with her while she went shopping. He declined citing all this farmwork that needed to be done so Ros headed off by herself. Stuart decided flying would be far more fun than farmwork so got the RV out and away he went. The RV was put away and he had his head in the engine compartment when Ros arrived back home. ”Been hard at work all day, dear?” ”Yes dear, haven’t stopped. Lots to do”. ”You lying prick”, she said. “I logged into Ozrumways and saw you had been out flying for more than 2 hours!” So now she is known by all at the Aeroclub as “RosRunways”.
  3. You can appeal but AAT is not a no-costs jurisdiction. Better to get a Specialist report and lodge through your DAME. I had my medical suspended for 4 months after I feinted on the loo one night. I was pretty sure I had double dosed BP pills but they were being ultra-careful. I had a massively thorough check up by a physician and now back to 2 year class 2 at 75.

    Stalls

I loved the hangar run at the end of the day...zipping along a foot off the ground at 50 kn, then a left wheel off the taxiway onto the hard stand. Judging the energy so that you arrived sans braking. are you going to Clare Valley fly-in, Bruce?

    Stalls

I can’t believe that bit about the Auster, Nev ? Mine seems to be rigged pretty straight and it will roll left or right with just a tad of rudder. Very simple stall recovery. i always try to land on grass if available and my turn onto final is often around 40-45 knots with the barn doors open to minimise touch-down speed (a few ruts and things from mowing when wet). I slip in the turn and avoid bottom rudder like the plague.
  6. Oh, the memories....Two-thirds of Mt Augustus was included in my lease of Cobra Station. My homestead was originally the Bangemall Inn about 50 miles west of it. The station was around half a million acres and ran down past the Pink Hills to the south. It was resumed by Govt after the drought that crippled us, along with several others including Mt Phillip, Walburg, Mt James and Pingandy. Wild times mustering even wilder cattle with a C172, motorbikes and horses. Sigh....
  7. I think you may fall foul of the guidelines https://www.business.gov.au/assistance/remote-airstrip-upgrade-program
  8. Mrs Possum will also appreciate the smoother ride in the PA28, compared to those lighter jobs. And the ability to pack more than knickers and bra for a trip away.
  9. Suggest you stay away from the Traumahawk...not one I’d recommend. The Cherokee is a super stable little aeroplane and the Lycoming O-320 is probably the most reliable old engine around. Cheaper flying in a C150-152 but has its limitations. High wing much better for off airport ops.
  10. Nasty piece of country with some very nasty weather possibilities there to even contemplate a direct route. Coffs has weather on radar and can give an advisory for transiting Aircraft. Lots of conjecture but ultimately down to the PIC.
  11. Early morning is good. Temps hitting mid 30s in Broome this week so hotter inland. Fitzroy Crossing 39 tomorrow.
  12. An example of a CPL who entered foul weather conditions that he knew about beforehand and took his passenger with him.

  14. John Buckley at Shepp is a tad older than you. His brother, Ben, is older again. John has 2 Tecnams, a lovely C182 he flies regularly, a couple of other 182’s he is rebuilding (one to 180) and a couple of Thorpe’s (also being rebuilt). But keep plodding, Yenn...you give me a standard to aspire to.
  15. Sorry Turbs but strongly disagree with your generalised statement. Many CPLs have indeed undergone significant extra training and accumulated considerable experience, including in decision-making. But a number haven’t and we read about the consequences. There are also many PPLs, including a few former RPT captains, who have accumulated a lot of the necessary. I likewise accept there is a probably larger number which hasn’t. I think the correct marker for Angel Flight is a sufficient level of training and experience, utilised in a suitably equipped aircraft. The licence doesn’t make the pilot.
  16. My mum told me I wouldn’t have happened if dad hasn’t come home on leave “feeling like that”.
  17. I’m clearly the baby of the bunch at just 75...Auster and I both first landed in 1944.
  18. An incredible ending. He had previously been in a 172 but apparently had never conducted a landing. He was uncertain about most of the basics and his radio usage gives a good idea of his novice status. hope it’s a happy ending for all including the instructor who fell ill.
  19. My mate on Minnie Creek had quite a large hangar for his Aircraft and the Centre trusses were bowed upwards. He commented on this to the former owner who told him a cock-eyed Bob had come through and his previous C172 made a number of attempts to take off inside it. the thermals are big north of the 23rd!
  20. Never mind mate...some people can’t see the wood for the trees, eh?
  21. A close up of the big bird would be good thanks, Phil.
